Guys, Thought I’d take the capo for a quick stretch the legs, and I finally spotted a new 1200 Tenere, going past the other way, at the Rathmines roundabout ( Lake Macquarie )very nice for what I could see.
July 10, 2010 at 6:35 am #183460I had a look at a new super tenere on tuesday, they look a very nice machine.

depends if you were riding alone and dropped it!!
Thinking about myself here!
July 10, 2010 at 8:01 am #183464They had one on display at the Superbike races at Phillip Island in March. Looked pretty good up close. From memory the weight was about 240kg dry compared to the BMW 1200GS at about 205kg dry for the basic bike then ++++ for all the extras.

Nick I doubt I could pick mine up facing down hill loaded with soft panniers, tank bag and the whole smash  So I plan on not dropping it  Again its all relevant and it is what it is mate. I see what your getting at but if picking one up was the reason behind whether to purchase or not ALL top end adventure bikes would still be in the show room

July 12, 2010 at 3:02 am #183504This is why I have 2 bikes xr for the bush and the nx to cruise around on my nx will never see the dirt TB so it will stay shinny and new forever its only a matter of time when you will ditch the yammi for another HONDA

the main reason I am interested in the weight of these bikes is that I am planning an off road cross Oz trip in 2 years time , I have looked into all adventure and enduro bikes and as i I will be taking 6 weeks minimum to get east to west then clockwise around. Some of this trip will be solo and a fair bit of sand which I don’t have heaps of experiance.
I realize their is a compromise when it comes to comfort and bike size but I would really like something that’s not revving it’s guts out all day on long sections but still has a good ability in tighter trails should the opitunity arise.
When new bikes like the tenere 1200 appear it’s another possible but unlikley candidate for the job which although ‘ it is what it is’ it does say adventure bike and if I’m going to stay safe from a get off , I may as well be on tar. Where’s the adventure in that!!
So I question the weight as a plus point or minus point in my book of bikes to travel Oz on , sad I know but how else do you deciede when their are so many good rides that all claim they can handle any adventure!July 12, 2010 at 7:03 am #183515There is no way in hell you could cross “sand dunes” solo with a Tenere 1200, even with a full crew wouldnt I entertain the thought its why I choose a single even though its heavy by enduro bike standards its certainly more manageable then a big multi cylinder

July 12, 2010 at 7:08 am #183516Sounds like you need some racks for the DRZ Nick. Just ride it through the worst terrain you can find all the way to WA. Then you can leave it in Perth airport carpak and fly home.

July 12, 2010 at 7:14 am #183517The route I take is going to depend totally on the bike I get , what are your first impressions of your Tenere for this type of trip?

Sand on any bike can be a drama but I feel it will be ok.
I would also pick a bike for the route not the other way as then you may have to compromise on things you want to see and do to suit the bike
Another thing for me was that all this style of adventure riding comes with a ride to the start and back and hrs and hrs in the saddle either on the way there or back or the ride itself, so its a compromise of comfort, cruisability, high speed running, handling, off road ability, ground clearance, power, fuel economy, reliability, availability of accessories and spares.
It took me 12 months of researching etc to decide and that even covered the ability to customise things and suppliers able to do the suspension and all the other bits and pieces I wanted done.
Where and when are you going across Australia I could be interested if you dont want to do parts on your own

Well TB I have been planning this trip for the dry season 2012 , a long way off I know but I am being very thorough as it’s probably a one off. The missus has no problem with the length of the ride so I would like 6 weeks at least. I drove through NT in 1992 as a pommie backpacker and saw roads off the stuart highway that the 72 kingswood couldn’t even consider but it has stuck in my mind as unfinished business so 20 years later bring on the mid-life crisis tour!! :woohoo:
I plan to travel north to qld then head west to Perth. As you would know their are lots of route options my only essential points being the sandover hwy, the old gunnbarrel hwy and Connie sue hwy to reach Laverton. Any local knowledge of good riding along the way is obviously welcome!
The remander or the journey from Perth is open to interpritation and the success to that point, I would love to venture North to the Kimberleys and across the top but this is unresearched so far.
I have had a few mates keen but when I show them the itinerey I think it scares them off, obviously I would like company for this type of trip but have no problem going solo and planning a ride like this including others that are likely to pull out would be pointless. I am basically planning a solo adventure but anyone who is keen and capable is very welcome!
So if any of this takes your fancy TB let me know ! -
