Took the young fella out for a ride at his favourite track yesterday and am so glad I did.
See he hasn’t been riding for a few months due to growing out of his boots, a few bikes issues and home renos getting priority, anyway he had some replacement boots (thank you Sir Mick, they came up a million bux) I fixed his bike and I put aside a few hours to take him out to his mates place where they have a nice little natural terrain course set out.
Anyway got there and his mate appeared on his TTR and off they went, a few steady laps dicing with each other and then whoa, what the hell is going on???It’s like the red mist descended over my young Bloke, his whole body English changed and his bike speed was at least twofold the bike was being backed into corners, clutch feathered on the apex and sideways out, his braking was aggressive and throttle was either shut or WOT…………………… After 5 years of riding he’s found his “zone”, he’s had moments of it every now and then, but for around a dozen laps he was riding like a demon, his poor mate decided to pull in and just watch with me, the blokes up at the farm shed came out and leant on the fence watching him as the bike wailed up and down the gears (which is the sound that drew their attention) and he looked very fluid and very smooth. Then all of a sudden on an uphill section he lost it, caught it with the throttle and appeared to deliberately lowside. He picked it up rode back to the ute and I could smell the bikes heat coming off it, he calmly removed his helmet and told Jordan & I “that was fun, was I rippin up or what Dad”?, I smiled at him and nodded, didn’t want to break his spell, he had a drink of water, a joke with Jordan and off they went again, for a few laps he just tooled around with Jordan, then he picked up the pace like a switch had been flicked, by this time it’s around 5.00pm and the sun’s getting low, I thought I’d give him 20 mins then wave him in, but he came in after few more laps and told me the “bike’s revving hard, but not accelerating as well”, and I could smell it, he’s fried the fibre plates in the clutch.
Anyway on the trip home he was about excited as can be about the afternoon and as soon as we pulled up he told me him and Jordan were going riding again next Saturday and I had to go as well, so we better fix the bikes up……I have to admit this fatherhood thing has it’s ups and downs, but this was one of the best feelings’ I’ve ever had, just to watch him and know how he was feeling, the adrenaline pumping, to see the grin on his face right up until bedtime and the pure joy he was getting from being in a place I know so well, and have spent my whole life chasing, was up there with his first words and walking.
It’s a bond all of us who ride share……..July 19, 2010 at 1:09 am #184112Nice one Mr Blue
I have so much to look forward to with my little mate and I can’t wait to see him have those experiences too.

July 19, 2010 at 1:28 am #184116STM mate, it’s enough to keep you going through the week, used to get a buzz watching him dominate his age classes at clubdays at BMX, but BMX isn’t my thing as well so I was happy for him and his Sister enjoying doind that every saturday for a few years (until club politics actually drove the kids off it, stupid adults, another story in itself, about him getting handicapped, then shoved up age classes against the rules of the sport because of his ability to ride )
TB Yep in a way they are no different to us have good days and not as good, except they don’t analyze as much just do, he watches all off-road racing he can, he rides the quad almost everday, changes his own oil, lubes the chain and cables and helps me perform much of the work on his bike. He has two hobbies (bikes and model trains) and he lives and breathes both of them, bit like his old man, obsessive and a sponge for experience.
Yesterday was special for me, cause I know exactly how he was feeling and as he’s riding, I’m thinking to myself ok down two, brake slide, up the tank, feather the clutch drive it out, back on the seat and hold it flat through the gears ….. and almost as I was thinking it he was doing it.Worth every 2-3 yr old tantrum, the school marks falling cause he hates school (rather be riding or playing trains), the fights with his sister, his whole attitutde to riding is exactly the same as I was at his age, I go to school so I can ride, I do these chores to ride, I read this magazine cause it’s about riding, I play this playstation game because it’s about riding, I clean my gear to go riding. I pester my Dad so we can go riding, and I remind him of why we do….
July 19, 2010 at 1:49 am #184113Nice Story Bruce
My young fella who is now 17 had similar experiences, starting out with the DR200 and learning how to ride, then having a KX250F as his race bike.Never really got into MX but loves trail riding on his 96 Husky WR250. He is now old enough to legaly go riding in the Bush and I look forward to that day when he and his old man are cruising the single trail

July 19, 2010 at 2:21 am #184117Great story Bruce!! Glad the young bloke fits the boots. Better on his feet than on the shelf in my shed.
Taylah went hard at the MX yesterday too. So hard that she had a moment and took a small spill and in her haste to stay ahead of the other girls she took off in a shower of sh!t and flipped her KX and broke the back mudguard.July 19, 2010 at 2:48 am #184132Great stuff Bruce I cant wait for my young bloke to start to ride his crf50 santa got him last year dad was over keen to get him on a bike but he is still to little and I dont want to rush him
July 19, 2010 at 2:55 am #184133You know Mick, in my minds eye I can actually see her doing that, determined look on her face and all………
Don’t rush him you old Devil, they find their own way, I have tried the “heavy coaching” using rewards system, apparently he listened to it all, but decided to actually use it when HE WAS DAMN WELL READY, and not before.
And it’s a great feeling being a Dad -
