We pull the piss out of it, we lament the passing of the “icon” it once was, we accuse them of being paid off, but for once i must congratulate the once mighty ADB crew for their honest appraisal of the negative rear end characteristics of the PDS equipped husaberg 2T in the last edition, even mentioning it was atypical of PDS bikes in general.
Is this the beginning of a new era of journalistic integrity amongst off-road testers? cause since the orange corp started using PDS in ADB reports it could do no wrong even the supremely dangerous ’99-’04 models.Did GE roll over in his grave and smite them?

I would rather read real peoples thoughts here that paid for their thoughts if you catch my drift

August 12, 2010 at 11:05 am #185806That’s why I posted it lads, was only half scanning it thinking “grovel, grovel, platitude, inane dribble, hail the mighty….WTF and realised they were telling the truth.
So had to applaude them, it is one thing to become corrupted it is far stronger to regain your impartaility.
Keep it up ADB and I may renew my subscription after i accidently let it lapse.. ………………………………………………… ………………… ………………………………………………. in 1997

i fitted a heavier spring, from memory a .44 or 4.4 :blush:
but being your average run of the mill weekend hack, i reckon it wasn’t going to pose any real issues for me..
or maybe it was the fact of the extra weight holding it down was to my advantage??? :blink: :S :silly: 😆 😆

I had an 02 and I don’t reckon it was dangerous at all. Have ridden linkage bikes that were dangerous. I suppose only the elite can notice the difference PDS/linkage

I guess the word Elite means the most here. I read once that they thought a PDS equiped bike would never go well in SX.Which has been the case until the 350. The every day punter in general would hardly know the difference. Or would extend a PDS shock beyond its comfort zone.
Back to the real issue how many magazines could you say are not swayed by “sponsorship”. Dont bite the hand that feeds you. There are a lot of manufacturers out ther in these comparisons(Yes the husa 2T was not part of a comparo)you can only please one of them. I know long term test bikes get continuous coverage with mods etc. But if they were continuously bagging them they would certainly dry up.August 13, 2010 at 12:28 pm #185850I found the PDS was Ok (after I spent a fortune with Terry Haye) at 95-100%, but under that it would unload unexpectedly and spit me into the scrub, and as far as a bike to jump or launch off anything worst bike ever, however it did excell at dropoffs at slower speeds, always landed well, was the rebound that was the killer.
I’m not elite, although maybe once or twice in my youth I rode with some pretty elite blokes.
August 14, 2010 at 12:34 am #185796Sad to say but ive only ridden a orange bike once for about 5 minutes. 300 exc so i can only really go on what i have read or heard. The owner who stupidly let me ride his ktm loves the bike and he had a few wr 450 before that.I have replaced all the bearings in a linked bike and that is not what you would call fun. The link looks great and allows it to be offset which would allow lots of alternative set ups with the engine, exhaust ie reverse engine layout. Yes yamaha have done it with a link but if another manufacturer does it will they copy the same basic layout. We could all be riding clone bikes but what would we have to argue about then. No orange is the best colour you dont have to wear a safety jacket to sweep while doing the corner man thing… yeah that would be fun :laugh: Some people like to ride things that are different just for the sake of being different or they just look cool.Why would people ride a Laverda, or an old te510 with the left sided kickstart that goes forward. Didn’t the ATK 604 (I hope that is the engine size)have a link as the rear shock was on the right side. ADB would bang on about them heaps back in the day. If you want to own a clone go and buy an OdesMCF450-R. We will all probably be on one in 10 yrs any way. I did listen Mr blue when you said about being flung into the trees. So being different in that case could have some hairs on it. But at least you would be different and we could all sign your cast :laugh:

I actually loved the Maicos’ unfortunately they couldn’t manage their finances and before i could get the money together to buy a new Alpha II they went swimming with lead wetsuit on.
If we put our money into a magazine, I wanna know what the bike is REALLY like, advertising brochures I can get at the dealers, along with the bullshut from the salespeople

WR450 AKA ‘The Commodore.’ Oldie but a goodie. How it did so well on its last shootout is a mystery. The other manufacturers should take yamahas lead and only change the stickers. When your on a good thing stick to it.We know it is reliable so we will have to give them this one. The next update of it will either win it or bin it.
KTM 300 exe top of its class that is to be expected.
CRF 250 top of its class, also to be expected.
TE 250 I have heard one bad review out on the trails but cannot offer any rating. If I lived in Europe I would probaby own one.Cant remember what ADB said. Cant be bothered going through the magazine rack to find out.
Sherco 3.0i-F none of the testers rate them so if it wins a shoot out start the disbelieving! On that note look at the spec sheet and they seem to be the goods but rarely deliver in the tests.
Saying all that they must get hounded from people saying there latest test was rigged, because the bike they just bought was found wanting in some area. “What! The brochure said it was the best bike in the world!!!?
Also I have been found to be incorrect on more than one occasion, but that is just my opinion until some new info comes to light…. Or maybe they are ‘starting’ to tell the truth now?

Do you know how silly this sounds for us ‘average-trailriding’ KTM and Husa folk to read??August 15, 2010 at 12:02 am #185941To be fair have a look on other forums talk to ex-KTM riders who now ride linkage bikes, now for me it was a disapointment to discover that there was an inherent design flaw somewhere in the PDS system on the customer bikes, cause I actually loved my EXC, and I spent an absolute fortune on the suspension with arguably one of the best PDS men in the world. Only to dail it in and discover that at near full pace it was unpredictable. I still love the build quality & engines, the ergos and ease of maintenance.
Now with the ADB, most of their test riders are fairly experienced competent riders, yet still a WR for yrs wins or comes second in shootouts, despite the fact that there are much better bikes that I have ridden in the same class, the KTMs for yearsno matter which class almost invariably wins the shootout, funny thing is the main man for KTM is our former world contender Jeff Liesk, who used to write for ADB. Now I have had the luxury though my life of riding almost every mainstream bike or a model of that’s been here for the last 30 odd yrs. I grew up on a diet of twin shock and Monocross that I’m sorry reacted just like PDS, except 25 years earlier, the innovation that came along with rear ends in the 80s & 90s made unpredictable rear ends a distant nightmare, even the white and first of the orange KTMs where like a magic carpet ride, then I bought a PDS 300…..On this basis I call a dog a dog or vice versa.
KTM & Husaberg even more so make beautifully turned out bikes but in the last decade they have done too many unproven dumb things, the 520s topend in the first model, the oil chewing habits of many of the new ones, the ring issues in the 250Fs.
I am not bashing them as I said they are beaut quality, unfortunately with some dumb decisions on a few areas.
And believe it or not I am waiting for them to get their crap togather so I can buy another one, was hoping for it to be the husaberg…..So I was disappointed with the execution of the rear end, because i wear a 6″ scar on my right forearm from the last unexpected high-speed PDS inspired moment I was treated to:
So if ADB said something I agree with, and it feels like the truth to me, I am sorry it offends the KTM owners out there, but like Harley davidson owners they can be a very defensive group.
