am looking to buy pre-loved dirt bike this w’end and as usual most bikes on the “OK” list are unregistered…..these include..1. never been registered 2.rego has run out so blue slip needed….3 pink slip supplied 4 registered i have fronted the RTA on several occasions with blue slip for category 1 only to be told that i need to present bike for RTA scrutiny….i was led to believe that this is a random thing much like a lottery…is this the case? and what about category 2? i recently bought a bike cosmetic write off only to find that i need to present to RTA scrutiny….i dont have a problem with that, just that to present costs $440 au……so buying a bike 2nd hand you have to factor in an extra half a grand to get it registered….or not?…does anyone know the RTA criteria for requesting a bike for scrutiny given the high cost? thanks russ

$440 seems a bit excessive. Are you sure you didn’t come across a RTA a^$ehole having a bad day???

seems a bit excessive……thats what i thought….when i booked in( for inspection) i also changed address and the dude said “four sixty thanks” so i gave him 10 bucks thinking #4.60 to change address…….he says “whats this?” i says $4.60 for change of address….he says NO $460.00 for inspection….well my jaw nearly hit ther ground….so thats why i’m concerned about buying unreg bike

when i bought the husky in queensland i brought it back down here and then proceeded to take the rego papers in, now the chick at the counter didnt like that it said the bike was blue and yellow on the rego and on the inspection sheet it said that it was red& white(as the previous owner got the new red&white plastics and put them on) and she said if it was up to her she would sent me for an pit inspection that would have cost me $400 but it was only a random thing that involved cars at that stage, so that was 5 years ago and they have brought it in on bikes now ?

That sounds very expensive! The only reason the RTA are such interesting people towards there customer is because they have no competition. They don’t have to be nice or accommodating because what are you going to do… nothing you cant go to the others there are no others. Although the RTA Lady at Wauchope was nice so I supose they are not all bad.

Thats is pure highway robbery!!! :(

I’ve never even heard of it before. What a load of bull shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How can they justify $460.

Qld transport do a similar random inspection but it is done by the person behind the counter. You have to take the vehicle to the dept of transport to pay rego and they may randomly come out to check the engine & vin numbers all match the paperwork. It doesn’t cost a cent more. Why should it? You pay for blue or pink slip, green slip, rego, insurance, plates, and now they want some stupid inspection too! NSW Sucks

Ahhh, I feel better now

i rang the RTA today and found out 1. any blue slip vehicle goes into random pick for scrutiny 2. scrutiny costs $58.00 3. all right off vehicles go for scrutiny and cost is $450.00
i feel a bit better about buying unreg bike now but still sucks if you get picked as there arent that many registry offices that do inspections….first one on east coast is carrington then penrith i think
