One of the Northern boys (Turnstyle) has sold his 400 and is looking at a 2010 300EXC.
He asked my advice but having not owned one I thought I would put it out there.
I have ridden my forest with four guys who own these and they all went very well.Thoughts?

October 3, 2010 at 3:08 am #188277Top engine, very versatile, easy going possibly the best all round tight trails motor ever put together, yet in outright power he will be up on the 400, in weight down.
October 3, 2010 at 3:49 am #188283He wants it for singletrack riding. Is your vote with the 300 Bruce?

Are you asking that as a gee up STM?  What do you reckon old one eye will say
:laugh:TB
October 3, 2010 at 4:45 am #188285Not the first choice for me, but he did ask of only 2 bikes, of the 2 I’d give the call to the 300.
The PDS actually works OK once dailed in ST, and the 300 is a “gentlemans” 2T, pity I’m not a gentleman…………
October 3, 2010 at 5:23 am #188278If that is the two bikes he is looking at, go the 300. Feels heaps lighter on tracks and has the adjustability in the motor.
If he is mainly doing single track and tighter fire trails I would even suggest the 250EXC 2T. I had one for a couple of months and it was a great bike for the tight stuff.
October 3, 2010 at 6:00 am #188286go the 300 for sure.
ive rideen mine at coffs and it loved it. its nimble and torquey through the ST and has wicked power at the twist of a throttle for the open stuff, like the beach hey STM
ive just been out today with the southern chapter. we did a particularly hard single. it just about killed Smurf   and we hit a spot with an uphill rutt out of a creek, with roots everywhere. i managed to bounce the 300 through with a few curses   . we had to drag all the 4 strokes up…man are they heavy suckers.
like bruce said, the best all rounder there is.
October 3, 2010 at 7:02 am #188279I’ve only rode a 300 for about half an hour and 250 for 23 or so.
If he’s not obese I doubt he’d be bothered by 250 having less torque + 400$ to buy a bash plate and rad guards :woohoo:.October 3, 2010 at 7:21 am #188288Diddel wrote:

October 3, 2010 at 7:27 am #188287Well I reckon ride both and think about what you do and what you may do in the future
The weight difference is 10 kilos which isnt earth shattering IMO. The 400 is a really nice bike that gets big wraps.
Owning a two stroke has benefits as does the 4 stroke. If you are going to turn in over in a few years the expense of rebuilding the 4 stroke wont be an issue. Fitting a piston in the two stroke around 100 hrs or whatever isnt a big deal either.
Ride them for yourself, I know your up the coast but Sutto’s have a ride day down here soon where you could ride them back to back. For me the 2 stroke is fun for a bit but they arent my cup of tea, either are some of the new 4 strokes, although mid next year I plan on buying another bike
I would look at a 400 but only KTM make a 400 enduro at this stage (is that right? ) and I wont be owning one of them
Good luck to you, it isnt easy spending your hard earned but rewarding when you get it right

October 3, 2010 at 9:02 am #188289Husaberg make a 390, but you would need a 570 to lug your big arse around Greg
