Went around to ride bikes with a new mate in tamworth. He had a 99wr as the topic said. I loved it. The wide ratio gearbox was great and it had loads of low down grunt. I did not expect a bike of this age to be so good.(although the leaking left fork seal on the front disk made braking interesting. It was light and heaps of fun. It had six day special decals on it although he said it was missing the stickers on the rear number plate. ISDE? Sorry I only started back on dirt bikes late 01. He said it could be registered but i looked for a compliance plate quickly but i did not see it. Anyone know much about this bike? Could it become a collectors item similar to the old IT’s are now? It was in great condition. I would like to make it mine but i dont think he would part with it.
Maybe I could convince him to swap with the wr 426?
October 5, 2010 at 11:12 am #188466Yeah like you need a bike that has more grunt ! We can’t catch you now.
October 5, 2010 at 11:25 am #188467It is not just the grunt I am chasing it is the ability to throw rocks from 50 m away with pinpoint accuracy to a point like your collar bone just like mal5.1 and menaces bikes

Yep the 1998 six days special designation YZ250Wr was the last of the TRUE 2T WRs that yamaha made, it was based upon a mix of the 1998 YZ250 and the previous year models WR250. A true Wide ratio gearbox and compliant rear suspension made it more enduro oriented.
I have an article here in my archives about them as I damn near boought one in Mint condition a few years back from up new england way, which leads me to think one of the dealers up there sold many of them( of not so many made, again I think it was Bert Flood that got them ADR’d) or had a hand in building the custom bikes. They seem to command good $$$ even now.
A good bike but front end was a bit slow on the steer from memory of the YZs of that time, not a carver like an RM or CR, but very stable at speed.
Those engines typical of the MX 2Ts of the late ninties put out close to 50hp, so in the power stakes definitely no slouch.
Is this cells Boony speaks of a tight mongrel technical S/T?
if it is perfect hunting ground for a 2T.October 5, 2010 at 11:12 pm #188498My neighbour sold his 98 2T WR last year in Excellent condition for $2700
October 6, 2010 at 10:32 am #188468Thanks for the history Bruce. I am definately going to ask him what it would take to make it mine. I looked heaps on the net last night and I only found one in crap condition and still wanted close to 3 for the thing. And no articles. The stand was on the swing arm which is a bit different but it looked cool. I think if i go asking him for photos of it he would smell a rat. I saw an 04 which looked even better on the net too but dont know about ADR compliance.
October 6, 2010 at 11:32 pm #188535There was recent a mint ’04 Yz250wr on ebay on the gold coast. had really low hours, but I think it went for a bit of a song too, around $4K from memory.
YZ250wr from 01-05 are fully complianced registerable in any state.

The guy who owns it removed stickers that had Aussie flags and ISDE stuff on it.
Think I might have to move these pics to the farmers shed post. She has seen a few poor operators with minimal up keep. Tezza’s RMX would beat it for value for money at the moment. Shame their is blue blood running my veins. Although I have owned 2 suzukis. :unsure:June 8, 2011 at 11:54 pm #202916I read in a mag recently that Yami are considering making the YZ250Wr again.
now that would be intertesting
June 9, 2011 at 1:28 am #202919that’s the bugger Aaron, they are a top bike and would give many modern bike riders a very big smile.
did you buy it?
I love them beasties… for a good reason too
June 9, 2011 at 2:02 am #202933No have not bought it but am considering swapping the 426 for it
June 9, 2011 at 12:10 pm #202936I looks like it’s done some work but it is a 99 model. They are good in the bush. A mate had a real nice one but I’m unsure of the model. it got pinched though.
I don’t really no what this one would be worth…goin on the photos I’d maybe pay around $2000 if it could be regoed. What do other OldBulls reckon.:cheer:
June 9, 2011 at 5:03 pm #202937They are more hard edged than the RMX250s, essentially a 6 days special that got carried on for another 5 years, in that model they took a yz250 and pulled it down, revalved the forks, rear end and installed a WR gearbox from the last of the WR250z’s, it was rumoured that the squish and carby were setup different.
There is a couple of older blokes up round Kilarney that used to have them and swore never to part with them.Almost bought a mint one 3 years ago for 5.5k.
Oh and they carry the all important adr plate
