Gale force winds, freezing temperatures, black snakes galore, a rogue possum, a randy Owl and Boony still didn’t stop us enjoying a fantastic couple of days riding in the Cells river region over the weekend.
I got a hint that there was a “Boony Cells tour” on, so I quickly invited myself. My missus was away with my daughter for the weekend, so that meant my son and I were free agents for two days in the Cells.
We arrived in the Cells at lunch time on Saturday and found that the boys had to chainsaw their way into the camp grounds after the wild winds had bought down numerous trees.
When we arrived the campground was deserted as the boys were out on their morning ride, so Connor and I set up camp and waited for the boys to come back for lunch. WE weren’t there for more than 10 minutes when we heard bikes approaching, they didn’t sound right though, the reason they didn’t sound right was because it wasn’t Boony and the boys but a group of boys from Wauchope On their KTM990s. When they spotted me they dropped in for a yarn and it wasn’t very long before the Tamworth boys dropped out of the bush and roared into the campsite. At this stage Boony decided to proudly show off his Great Wall of China, family wagon. Looks the goods for the coin.
No sooner did the Wauchope boys take off, shaking their heads in amusement at Boony, two other riders roared into camp on the new Aprillias, a quick yarn with those boys revealed that they too were Old Bulls.
Whist we were yarning with them one of the Aprillias decided to have a lay down for no reason, a lesson in not to hang your brand new helmet on your handle bars as the bars came down heavily on the helmet, no doubt doing it no good at all.
A quick farewell to the boys saw us have a quick feed and head out for an afternoon of great fun in the bush. No where I have ridden can match the Cells for great trails through great country.
Bill had a bit of strife in some rutts
We found a quarry that the boys pulled some hilarious capers in, none more hilarious as Aaron who binned the WR in spectacular fashion, tearing of his number plate and tail light.
A couple of pics of the shenanigans, Other guys got better pics than this though.AS it was getting a bit late and bloody freezing we thought it best to main trail it back to camp,by the time we got back to camp we had done 75km for the arvo. Even though I managed to get filled in twice I still had an awesome arvo.
WE then set PEP to work with a Chainsaw to cut us enough wood for what was going to be one very cold night. He did a top job and had a ute full cut in no time.It wasn’t until he got back to the fire that we realise he had been out and cut all that firewood with no boots on, only socks!!
Once the fire got going so did the ring of knowledge.WE got the fire going real good to avoid hyperthermia.
A great night ensued and great yarns, jokes and laughs followed.
Day two report to follow as I better do some work.

Thanks for the invite Boony  Jeepers you boys ride just in my neck-of-the-woods and you don’t even let me know.

Couldn’t go anyway. My boy had his first ride MX at the Hasting track

Sunday morning dawned clear but crisp, a thin layer of frost coated everything which made it a bit hard to get going.
A quick breakfast saw us kitted up and ready to rip for a casual Sunday morning blast.
We hit the singles straight away and any thoughts of being cold soon faded as we wound our way through the awesome Cells singles. We were ripping along quite well when we came to a corner and there was a dude sitting there on a Husaberg. We asked what was going on and he said, I am the corner man.” For what”, was our reaction. It turns out he was on a paid tour run by a well known tour company from down south. We pressed on with our ride and got strange looks from all the corner men we came across along the trail. Probably not as strange as the look we got from the tour leader that tried to put Boony on corner duty as he roared past. WE eventually turned of the route the tour was taking and didn’t see another bike all day.WE rode some great stuff Sunday morning on our way to the Gold mines in the Cells gorge.
Boony and Pete
The team at the top of the Gorge
The drop down the hill was very steep as the sign said. The trail was in great condition and was a fun ride that had your arms pumped at the bottom.
At the bottom it took us no time to find an old mine
WE bravely decided to explore the mine.
I think there was a predator in there
There were a few bats and glow worms too
The Cells Creek was a pretty spot
The trails we rode down there were great.
WE headed back up the BIG hill to the top, so we could ride Boony’s Kakoda trail. It was 6.5km long and freaken unreal!!Just imagine 6km’s of this great stuff!!
Then it was back to camp and pack up for the trip home, not before we headed to Gingers Creek for one of their great Burgers.
This sign amused me on the way home.
On the way home Connor asked what we are doing next weekend, my reply was “ How’s about we go fishing” His response was “Wrong answer Dad”.
WE had the best time, thanks to the Tamworth boys. Thanks Guys!!!

Snowy wanted to go for a ride at either Lithgow or cells, his mates in Lithgow ended up not being available so we headed off to cells.
Billy loaded and ready
Snows rig
the pair at gingers waiting for a late runnerI studied the weather map for a few weeks and knew we would be in for some crappy stuff, and it didn’t let us down, talk about blow the dog off its chain.
Camp was set up and it was time to go and do a bit of trail maintenance, so off up the Kokoda we went.
We kind of cleared a path and thought we were going great guns until Snowy got taken out by a rouge vine that shot him off the back of his bike like a fighter plane off a carrier. Snow recons he looked up only to see the DRZ sailing up the Kokoda trail pilotless. We got hours of value out of that one.We rode a few more new trails and then I said that I needed to go to Telstra hill and check if some of the boys had tried to ring to say if they were coming or not, We pops out on the main road only to find it blocked by a huge mother of a gum, We cleared a kind of a path that we could get a 4by out through in case of an emergency, then i rang the boys and said If your still coming bring a saw.
Saturday
To their credit they turned up Saturday morning at camp just as we were heading up to see if they could get in to camp. They had cut a path to a bike ride, now that’s dedication. We waited for them to gear up and off we went riding on what can only be described as the best off road riding ground around, loamy, grippy, slippery, tight, open and just full on fun.
I told the boys that the mayor of wauchope would have sensed we were in his turf and he would probably be sitting in our camp arms crossed and tapping his foot. So we headed for camp and sure enough there he was young bloke and all.
Hellos said, intros done, foreigners sent on their merry way, it was time to play Old Bulls style.
Single trails, drag races, freestyle show at the quarry, some main road stuff (yuk)75 ks later (arvo ride remember) we arrived back at camp.
Knackered and with smiles from ear to ear.
Ring of knowledge set up and some bevies consumed and that was Saturday.
Sunday dawned with the gods shining on us, not a breath of wind and not a cloud to be seen.
We headed out for a quick wind down ride(yeah right), we belted up a fire trail heading to the first single and that’s when we met the tour riders, (by the way boys you all still owe me $200.00). Explanations said to the blokes pointing up the trails were off, I`m thinking how good of a ride organiser am I, even supplied static corner men for the boys, Jeez them blokes looked confused. Yeah and when old mate point to the corner and I roosted and kept going was to die for.We upped the anty and got the heck out of their way. (after all they paid for their ride).Micknmeld looking out for the preditor
Snowy
Billy
Jarrod
Aaron
Pep
We rode the worlds bestess trails for the next few hours and then I steered the tribe down to a gold mine i knew of.
We done the touristy thing and then headed back to camp via Kokoda, loaded up and headed to gingers creek for lunch.Fairwells done everyone went home.
Thanks to all for a top weekend.

Then again was it Boony??
THen again was it Bill??
October 18, 2010 at 7:04 am #189076I prefer to think of my attempt as not just trying to get out of the creek but as an attempt to clear the bank and 20 metres beyond. the oppurtunity to look at the underside of a DRZ was just a bonus. It also poses a question , Is a DRZ the only bike that keeps running when its totally upside down?

November 1, 2010 at 7:09 am #189062Great report Polly ( also boonster and mick etal)I think you took the last pic of my number plate and gay standard mud guard on my bike.I have just bought a Yz one and will mod it with lights etc. and ditch the steel supports. Was fun in the quarry bloody pep makes things look too easy. Thanks everybody for getting that gumby moment. But i did have a few of them. A tip to all people who could ever in the future go on a ride with these guys. Don’t go to bed first as someone could put bread all over your swag so the possums climb on you while you sleep. Thanks guys you are soo funny. What is it with these Old bulls they all sleep on camp stretches or in their great wall caravans etc  Will bring blue circle along for you all next time   Also dont put your beer anywhere near Micks as it will almost certainly end up all over the ground or in the Jatz biscuits  But as we found out it is ok to eat these but you must do it quickly before the soggy sets in! Sorry guys but i did not enjoy kokoda after hitting that log and trying to drive my neck into my lungs. Next time I go im taking a hedger and a quad bike so we could drive a bus down it. Thanks to all.
