    Hey Bulls

It is time to replace my trusty od Hiux with something new. I only ever considered Toyota in the past but I am seeing a lot of Navara’s around and the ABN deal right now is very tempting. I know there are a few Bulls with them so any advice woud be appreciated.

    Cheers

mate has one and it’s the ducks guts, for a 2.5 litre it sure has some torque, out pulls the prado loaded with bike trailers and 3 bikes in each – 700+ kms to tank, comfy, 3t towing capacity -would have one in a heartbeat

Hey Scott, a mate of mine was 4wdind at a quarry not far from you in his D22 3.0litre turbo and rolled it about 6 weeks ago. He loved his D22 and said he was going to get another. BUT he went and bought the D40 instead and said they are like chalk a cheese. He reconds the D40 is more comfy than the older D22 and I must admit it seems more comfy when I have diven it compaired to the D22 he had. It is so much more capable offroad compared to the D22. Places where you had to give the D22 a fair bit of right foot to get through the D40 just walks through no worries at all. So it might be worth checking out the D40 as well. Mate reconds the D22 is a farmers ute with a few extras to get it more marketable, where the D40 is more of a family offroader.

Thats fast changing Bruce with common rail injection, VGT turbos, compound turbo charging etc they go well now for what they are, certainly better then years gone by.

And they have changed the name to diesels as well now

    G’day STM
Check out this website, its where people who are not satisfied with their vehicles ask for help or just complain as the title suggests.
Its a great website to just surf and see what dramas occur with new cars and car dealers etc.
    Hope it helps. Gotowo

Compare the Hilux 3.0l diesel with the Navara and you will see there are less complaints with the Hilux.
I had a 08 Hilux diesel. Great car.

Like most of the new mid size 4wd the rear suspension is very soft for a good ride but they hit the bump stops at any more than 700 kg , I had to fit air bags on my hilux to sort it. Also the clutches are useless I’m on my third in 130000km and a mate with a Navara is on his second in 80000. Their are heavy duty clutches avalible but they won’t fit them under warrenty.
I reckon they are all very similar now and apart from resale the hilux isn’t leaps ahead of all the others like it used to be, on price and hindsight I’d go the Navara.

A late model secondhand Hilux will be a lot easier to sell than a late model secondhand Navara.
I would be test driving a new Hilux as well.

My budget is 30k so my choice is new Navara or second hand Hilux.

You are right, we have a couple of turbo dIEsel sedans here at work now, and while no 1/4 mile burners they go significantly better and get great mileage compared to the older turbo injector style engines, but still not a thing I’d drive for fun.
But as an everyday driver i agree most certainly.

(Still prefer a free breathing modded 32 valve quad cam petrol with a good exhaust and aftermarket tune…, more fun, but we won’t speak of mileage)

I reckon having had both the Hilux & Navara dIEsels for a few years eaxch in recent years, the hilux while great vehicle is NOT worth the premium commanded for them, the difference is just not that great.
And I actually reckon the Ford ranger(ahem, cough cough) is a better one altogether, we just replaced a whole fleet of hiluxes (and the fleet manager is toyota all the way) with half rangers/ half Colarados, both seem like excellent vehicles, but bloody heck the Rangers get along very smoothly (for a dIEsel)

I have 3 mates that have had deisel nissan dual cabs. Not sure if they were D22 or D40, I don’t know the specifics as not really a diesel fan. Anyway they would have been 2007 and 2008 models if that helps. All 4wds. 1 was hardly ever used as 4wd, dirt roads every day but not much serious off roading. It was the bees knees. Great car and no problems. The other two were farm managers cars. Hard life all on dirt, heavy clay soils so you can imagine what it was like in wet weather. No end of troubles with the drive train. Can’t remember if it was the gear box, transfer case or what but just know they were getting repaired a lot. Having said that, I’m pretty sure all 3 would still say the nissans were a good vehicle and at least as good as a hilux.

My new neighbor has a Dark grey Navara Platinum edition dual cab I dont know what its worth but has 20 or so ks on it hard back looks very nice.It must be about a year old if that. He said he was thinking about sell it. Dont know how that would fit in your price bracket. Could be way more but I dont know what they are worth. PM me if you want me to ask any questions.
