Why are snail cams not used on my wr. Iam sure my mx 100 had one years ago, so i spose it is no a munufacturer thing. What are the bad things about them? I remember them being simple back in the day. Getting the bolt type lined up perfectly is a bit of a pain. Other manufacturers could still use them I just have not payed enough attention. I will from now on.
November 17, 2010 at 1:08 am #190885My XR600 had them and it was a 1999 model and my 2001 mod XR650 has the bolt type so I am presuming they went out of favour about 2000.
I am with you Aaron, they where simple to use and I wish my bike still had them.

Yep, they are the best (the Super Commuter still has `em) :laugh:November 17, 2010 at 1:27 am #190891The bolt type certainly looks more like what you would see on a factory bike. I hope we are not just using them because they look cool. If I thought that way with everthing I would have to remove my head. Somebody has got to come up with a good reason why we have to get 3 tools out to adjust the chain and do up the axle. I can see it coming in the future when a bike comes back out with them and they tell us that it has an all new better system “the snail cam”.
November 17, 2010 at 1:43 am #190893The reason they have been axed is the bolt style are faster when changing your wheel. In a 10min work period snail cams are slower. The bolt style you just bang the axle through, push the wheel forward and tighten done.
I am doing some tech videos soon and will demonstrate what I mean then

November 17, 2010 at 1:49 am #190895I hope they never come back Aaron for the reasons, to fiddly, snail cams seem either too tight, go one notch too loose  , bump the wheel and the cam spins around

I can’t wait to see the vids TB. Just don’t do any on tyre changing, because I’ve have had heaps of fun over the years watching guys changing tyres and tubes only to see em pinch them again. Normal while a group of us stir them about it with a JD in hand.
November 17, 2010 at 2:03 am #190897Good to know the reason is legit although maybe we could do that video as a race between mick on the snails and TB on the Bolts when w go to Coffs. That would make for great watchig while drinking! Then and only then will I believe that they are quicker. The last time I took my rear wheel off (to change the front sprocket) was the first time I have done without undoing the bolts. Only because a bloke said it was faster. I could not get all the blocks back in by myself so I needed some help. So yes that video would be of use to me.
November 17, 2010 at 2:04 am #190898I am not sure where the snails are but one has left a trail on Hatto’s lip this month.

GOLD STM.
November 17, 2010 at 4:59 am #190907The DRZ still has em and i’m glad for that. I don’t race so the extra poofteenth of a second doesn’t matter to me. I do wish it was like my old XR250 though. On that I didn’t even need to pull the bolt out, just loosed enough and pull the wheel out. This made life a lot easier not having to line up the spacers when putting the wheel back on.

If ya stand back and have a look at them you will see they are the shape of a snail. Not many bikes have this style adjuster any more. Like TB said race bikes go for a system that is faster to change the wheel but needs more tools to adjust the chain.

If you measure between the axle & swingarm bolt there will be a difference of 3-4mm when you think it’s all lined up
