    gday guys n girls,
names jason, 29yo (30 in a month) from the lovely town of port macquarie.
about a year ago i purchased a cheapy chinese 125 for the kids and i to blat around on, but it hasnt been until recent that we have taken it out for a run.
on our latest trip to a mates in tele point i had a chance to wind it out and soon found it wasnt quite enough for me, so ive decided to purchase another bike for myself, and let the kids ride the 125.

ive been visiting the local shops looking at my choices and researching on the net too.
on tuesday i visited Mud and Tar out at wauchope, and one of the fellas told me about this site.
i had previously seen the site during my many net searches but always assumed it was mainly for 40 or 50yo’ and didnt want to intrude, but the fellow at the shop assured me itd be ok.
    so here i am.

i still am not quite sure as to what i am after, i am leaning towards either the yamaha ttr230 , or a honda crf230f, mostly the honda.

ive been offered the ttr230 for $5600
and the crf230f for $5290 with a free helmet @$120

what id really like is the opportunity to try both bikes, but it seems the shops dont allow that.
i really dont want this to turn into a brand war, but id like to know which id be best off with.
i wont be doing jumps or stupid things, just riding around the bush with and without the kids.

sorry if this message is wayyyy too long, i just want to get this right.

id also like to know if there are others around my area who would be happy to let me join them for a ride one time, until i get a bigger bike ill just be on the 125, but ill do my best to keep up

G’day Jason and welcome. A few questions that may help. How much risding have you done to date (how many years on bikes). How tall are you and what do you weigh. What are your plans for riding in the future. Do you reckon you will ride heaps or just the occasional ride. Do you have a budget.

Out of the two bikes you’ve listed both would be fine. Both have been around for ages and are tried and true. The best bike would be the one that has been looked after the best.

    thankyou for your welcome.
riding to date, i owned a dt175 when i was 16, it had been thrashed and probably ran like a 50. i rode it for about 6months.
i had a quick go on my mates rm125 a few years back and crapped myself everytime it hit power band.
other than that its just been about 4hrs on the chinese 125.

height, i can only tiptoe on a yz250, almost flat footed on the 230s mentioned in my original post.
weight, not sure prob about 85kg.

my plans for riding are just to enjoy the bush. i also have a few mates in campbelltown who ride fairly often and ill join them say twice a year.
at a guess i think the most riding ill do will be a few hours once every fortnight, but during xmas hols it might be more.

as for budget, at first i was thinking of a used yz125 or rm125, then i spotted a demo model on the net for $6k, so i considered that for a week or so, but im not entirely sure i want a race type bike, more a cruisy bike with power if i decide i want it.
i think id put my budget at $6k, ill be getting finance, yamahas 5.99% is attractive, but i do prefer the look of the honda.

I would highly recommend one of these as a starting bike very reliable very low maintenace and can be ridden on the rd for long distance. ;)

    Hey there Astray. :)

I would be looking at a XR250 or a DRZ250 with rego. Great learners bikes and a bit more grunt than the 230’s and you’ll get one for the dough that you have for sure. Ya did’nt mention if ya had a licence either. If not get it all sorted and you’ll be able to go some great OLDBULL rides up your way.Catch ya on the trails. :)

Welcome, Ollie and Dusty are on the money IMO, the only other thing I suggest would be a
2nd hand TTR250. Cheaper get some experience, be sure its what you want and then you will have
more of an idea when yhou buy your dream bike whatever that maybe. A TTR is electric start very low maintenance and a little more grunt then a 230.
If you are keen on a 230 I recommend the CRF after seeing what Kat’s as done

i dont have a bike license, ive considered it a few times before, but i really dont like the idea of riding a bike on the roads, your kinda at the mercy of everyones elses stupidity.
do you guys only allow licensed riders to ride with you?

Mate, if you are going to ride in state forests you need rego (and license). one for your peace of mind knowing your legal and wont have the police on your arse hunting you down, and two if you happen to run into some one they are covered with your CTP.
Most OBtrail rides are meant for regoed bikes, the exception is when we go to a bike park like Louee or Lochmaree then no rego required. ;)

+1 on the TTR and the DRZ250 which Mud and Tar should be able to hook you up with B)

thankyou very much for all the warm welcomes.
i really do hate to be a stick in the mud, but a regod bike really isnt an option for me.
we have 2 cars, one my04 astra i finished paying off last year which i gave to my gf,
and a my10 lancer vrx i just started paying off,
if i was to get a regod bike id be riding it to work, missus driving one car to work, and the other car just sitting there except for on rainy days when id drive instead of ride. probably a waste in rego, and if i was to sell one of the cars my missus would have to drive me to work on rainy days, and thatd be a bitch considering we work conflicting work hours.

one of the positives of getting a new bike was when the girls got used to the chinese bike they could start riding the bigger bike too, and the thought of snapped off blinkers and smashed headlights isnt pretty.

i understand what you mean about the fines, when i was young one of my mates got caught on a bike, fine was a bit over $1k if i remember correctly.

seems i have alot to think about, seems like you cant even have fun in the bush on a bike without getting screwed by the gov these days.
either pay reg or pay fines, either way your a slave to them.
i thought being out of the city areas, the cops might be a bit lax.

its hard enough deciding what bike lol, let alone deciding whether a reg bike or not.

99% of the rides here are rego required (non negotiable) and if you read the about us tab up the top will you will understand better what we are about. Hope you have a friend with acres or enjoy the drive to a ride park. Good luck with what you choose but there is plenty of fun to be had in the bush with rego bike as its heaps cheaper than paying the fine once

You need to seriously look at your options. If you want to ride in the bush your bike must be registered simple as that. Coping a fine would be the best bad scenario, consider if you have a crash and injure someone else in the bush. It is the same as having a crash on the road and being unlicensed and uninsured, you will be paying a huge fine and looking at jail time. I know this scenario is unlikely but it can happen. Also you might bust yourself up and have to get choppered out (have you got ambulance cover?) on top of all the hurt you will be charged for being unlicensed and uninsured. I do not want to turn you off your ambition to get out riding I am simply trying to make the point that if want to pursue this sport you need to factor in rego and licence as a must not a maybe. I think most if not all OBTers would agree that we all try hard to do the right thing by having registered bikes and being licensed because if we do not we just promote ourselves as irresponsible tools, and while we may all like a good lark our aim is to promote responsible riding. You should be able to buy a good s/h trail bike with rego between 5-6k. Have you looked at the KLX250, from memory they are around the same price as the CRF250F but are registrable?
