Took Tims carby off and cleaned it out, everything looked very clean

Emptied his tank and removed the v/v stem, Again spotless
Just before we put the carby back in we decided to take a look at the reed v/v’s
On removing the reed block we noticed this

Bike had been playing up and would not rev cleanly
I can only imagine that this is the problem
Has anybody else had similar issues??
And what new v/v’s do we put back in a stock KTM 200
From memory (25-30 years ago) we used to put stiffer reeds in, but I could be wrong.
Any sugeestions??
If not, I will stick to the original parts
Cheers

MurphDecember 14, 2010 at 9:07 am #192581Hey Murph. It will be a nice easy fix mate. My old 300 did the same thing but was not as noticable as Tims. Mine was more of a crack.
I can’t remember the type I put in but they were after market ones and all was good again.

Read about the Boyesen 2 stage reed.
I’m pretty sure thats what I put in my IT490 all those years ago
Hope it fixes the fault
MurphDecember 14, 2010 at 8:58 pm #192630+1 on the Boyesens
If you wanted to spend a bit more, you could look at the V Force reeds.
December 14, 2010 at 9:54 pm #192631Thanks Mick
But I’m sure the boy will only spend what he needs to
Any need to change jetting, pretty sure I didn’t have with the 490??
Cheers
MurphDecember 14, 2010 at 10:07 pm #192582They look like carbon reads? I’m a little surprised they broke. Cracking more likely. Have heard of that happening in the past. Old reads we used to turn over to get more life out of them. Seeing as KTM has affection for V-Force reads I would be considering them first as a replacement Murf.
December 14, 2010 at 10:14 pm #192632No real need to change any jetting specs Murph.
December 14, 2010 at 10:15 pm #192634Cheers fella’s
Will just see whats available locally and go from there
MurphDecember 15, 2010 at 12:04 am #192635probably useless information seeing smurph only wants to spend what is necessary.
but a guy i was speaking to that has an 07 KX250, fitted Boysen ‘Rad Valves’ to it and he reckoned it was the best bang for buck he had spent on it. he said it increased his mid and top end power, but broadened the power out through the whole rev range.
December 15, 2010 at 3:19 am #192583Murph/Dusty,
How many hours did you blokes have on the bikes before it happened.
Had the carby out the other day too and almost checked but thought it was just another thing I didn’t know anything about. Probably should of.
December 15, 2010 at 3:39 am #192584Hey Bundyroy. Mate I don’t know exactly how many hours but at first I just kept oiling up plugs every ride and than it was running like a dog like it had shit in the carb. It was’nt until I rang oldmate Pete the mechanic at Cessnock KTM who told me to check out the reeds. I put a new rings in aswell at the same time. At a guess mabye 300 – 400 hrs. It was a 99 model and i done it around 06 if I remember rightly. I rode heaps more than aswell, 3-5 hours every weekend mostly. The good old days
December 15, 2010 at 3:45 am #192585Thanks Dusty. Sounds like it is fairly easy to tell something is wrong and I’ve only got 150 hours up so far so touch wood might not have to worry for a while yet.
December 16, 2010 at 3:25 am #192677Tims bike just started running like crap
We’ve owned it for a couple of years now and it has been a good reliable bike until now
Had to order the Boyesen reeds in and they cost about 100 bucks
Will keep you updated when we fit them some time next week
Cheers
