Just a reminder to everyone travelling to Micks Birthday Ride or anywhere towing a trailer.
Check, grease or replace your wheel bearings if they have not been done in a while.
Its been quite a few years since I’ve had mine apart and on doing so today, found the inner rollers and cones to be in a sad state (ie the hardened surfaces delaminating) Fair chance it would of made the disatnce but what if it didn’t:angry: I’ve fitted new bearings and seals now and I’m in a much happier state of mindB)
Bearing kits around $25 from Repco

I thought I was not to shabby at such a simple maintainance job as repacking trailer wheel bearings, I redone mine after the DIY vid was posted, All full of my own importance i reconned they were all good,Bugger me if I went to load the predator (DRZ400E for LC Forplay) on the trailer for the nundle ride and just thought i would give the wheel a shake, stuff me if it wobbled, Turned out the splitpin actually did not hold the nut in position, i had to place a thin washer behind the nut to bring the nut out further to make sure the splitpin actually worked, All is good now, but hey go out and check them right now or its gunna be ugly on your next outing,,,,,Dont say you werent warned. :angry:

Boony did you put it back together without the split pin in? Or you didnt put it in the cut away section inmthe nut? What did you do mate I don’t understand what your saying sorry

everything was in place mate, it was just that the system was warn and the nut could rotate anticlock wise a small distance, thus loosing the whole system. I think the whole lot needs replacing, it might even be the stub shafts.

By the sounds of it the castle nut wound so far up the stub axle the split pin was too far from the nut. The nut then unwound itself to meet the split pin to the point where the wheel was loose. I guess the vibrations would have annoyed you enough to stop before the hub broke off.

That’s what I figured Axel but couldn’t work out who would put it together like that or had something been left out otherwise it would have been like that before it was pulled apart.

Judging by Boony’s last reply :laugh: I wouldn’t follow the trailer

Haha :laugh: You bet. Mental note there for everyone.

I find the grease nipple cap assembly for the trailer wheels work well. Just keep pumping grease through the bearings without having to pull them down as often. For the price of bearing kits it’s well worth doing them every 5 years at least.

Bugger,
I was hoping to get away with going to Mick’s birthday without having to do the trailer bearings.:whistle:
I knew in the back of my mind that they should be done.:unsure:
Now you lot have shamed me into doing them this weekend. :pinch:
