How would you like to be part of a world first?
Three everyday Aussie blokes will set off on the adventure of a lifetime, to cross Australia East to West on motorbikes unsupported. They will have to survive harsh terrain of 98% dirt, sand, rock and mud, whilst crossing over 1,500 desert dunes.
Facing incredible challenges while enduring the most unforgiving environment in the world, Leroy, Geordie and Jon need your support. YOU are invited to the launch of the trip, to be part of this incredible adventure.
Join the boys and hundreds of motorcyclists for the festivities of the trip launch at Byron Bay, NSW (Cape Byron) at 9am for a 10.30am send off to Casino NSW. Register your attendance at the launch or participation in the Byron to Casino fun ride, simply by filling out the website form at http://thesoutherncrossing.questionpro.com
Yes I am one of the three riders who want to make this real!
Please feel welcome to ask questions and give constructive criticism.
We have some great fun things happening during this weekend for all, young and old.
Cheers,

Good luck with the ride , ya lucky buggers!!March 17, 2011 at 10:44 pm #198303Hey Nickj, I see you have good taste in bikes, I have a DRZ400SM (2006 model) and will be riding one of the three 2010 model Teneres across AU.
What mods have you done to your Tenere?
Cheers,
March 17, 2011 at 10:56 pm #198304I am loving the Tenere but found suspension was an essential upgrade and I also fitted,
B&B bash plate
Water pump protection
Frame gaurds
Ralle Moto steering dampener
High rise bars and raisers
Leo Vince pipe
Sw motech crash bars
High front gaurd
High screen
Headlight protector
And probably more that I can’t remember on a Friday !!!March 17, 2011 at 11:07 pm #198307Great looking bike, I would have liked to put an aftermarket pipe on our bikes but unfortunately it is a matter of $$$ which we have little if any spare. We are very thankful to Motorrad Garage and MPE for helping us set our bikes up to the stage that they are at.
Have you been on any long distance rides yet?
March 17, 2011 at 11:18 pm #198308Ummm… You say on your webste that this ride has never been done before but Phil Hodges and Tugboat Bill did the ride last year and they were chasing Tony Kirby’s record which was set many years before. Read about the ride here… http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=604513&highlight=Philth or get the DVD which was filmed by Phil.
I am not taking away from what you guys are out to achieve but let’s give credit where credit is due eh fellas!?

I have been on a couple of rides in the 10 weeks I’ve owned the Tenere and managed to add 3600km to the clock. It’s a good bike once you realize you have to stop thinking usual single track riding :pinch: and start riding it for what it’s made. !
In 2 weeks I will be doing the Old Bull 4 state ride and that will really put the mods to the test! A few of us are going to do a 4 day add on after this ride which will make an 8 day Tenere work out! I think she’ll be shining at the endMarch 17, 2011 at 11:34 pm #198310I will answer for Nickj as he is properly piss wrecked being it’s friday night

The difference is that for most of the way we will not be riding along public, made roads, we are traveling along the 26th parallel as closely as possible once we get to Haddon Cnr other than a ride up to Alice to see the Finke Desert Race and to meet with local icons of the outback.
If you go to our website you can see a copy of our itinerary which is much different to what has been done before by other adventurers.
Phil and Tubboat did a great job of their ride and have a lot of knowledge of the outback to pass on and even though I have not had the chance to meet them personally I believe they are really genuine guys.
They do deserve much respect for the ride they conquered….

Great read Trailboss, we were looking at fitting steering dampers but have not yet, are they worth the $$$, which would you suggest best for our purpose?
Thanks,

Thanks,
The best thing you can do is have your suspension done properly by Tekniks, they are the specialist with the Tenere’s now in Australia. The steering damper is the 2nd best mod I have done, Steve from Adventure Moto looked after myself and Nickj (and many other Old Bulls) See Nick’s thoughts on the suspension in the Tekniks forum in the Yamba suspension weekend thread. I couldnt imagine riding a standard suspended Tenere anymore, you guys must have had yours done?
As for the damper its a must if you are going to ride sand and you are  Steve from adventure moto gives a discount for OBT members

March 18, 2011 at 2:16 am #198320We had our suspension modded at MPE, don’t ask me what they did but I was impressed by the results. I have only ridden the Tenere briefly thus far as the bikes are up in Brisbane and I am in SA. The first ride I had of the Tenere was as if it was going to wallow and tank slap all the time and last ride I had which was after MPE worked wonders it handled like it should, much better, stiffer and positive. Like I say, I am not sure what they did as I did not organise for the work to be done but it worked but was not cheap. The bikes even seemed to stand taller which was a problem for me as I am a short arse…. The less head-shake the better in my books.
I will check out Adventure Moto’s details but can you tell me which damper you have?
Thanks,
March 18, 2011 at 2:18 am #198322Rally Moto damper which is a MSC rebadged as I said speak with Steve, send him an e mail tell him Greg sent you
