So who’s signed up for Hattah this year?
I’m in Masters #604. First time for me! :woohoo:
I would be interested in hearing about bike setup and fitness training from any veterans.Regarding training I am doing core strength 2-3 times a week.
Weight training (low weight, high reps) 2 times a week.
Riding the pushy around 20km twice a week.
Riding the motor pickle at least once a week.Regarding bike setup for the YZ450F I’m looking at running Dunlop Geomax MX51
Gearing…I was thinking 14/45.
Running a Steering Damper.Any coments would be appreciated.
April 14, 2011 at 11:55 pm #199466I was the fittest I have ever been in my life before last years Hattah, and to be honest it did me no good what so ever. IMO Hattah is more about your ability to ride the sand. If you think you have ridden sand before nothing can get you ready for that track.
If you like deep deep sand you will love it. I ran 14/50 on an 09 WR450 with an ED78 rear tyre at times the bike wouldn’t pull top gear the sand was that deep. There was only two real long straights so I probably would have been better running 13/50. Damper is good but you can’t turn it up to much as there are some tight turns on the track.
You will have to know you fuel economy too unless you plan on stopping every lap. Make sure you know how to reload your rolls offs quickly or have a spare set of goggles ready to go. Tear offs were not allowed last year.
April 15, 2011 at 12:22 am #199491Never done it myself……..But talking people that have and reading/ watching stuff tells me you wouldn’t get any better advice than what Badbowie has told you!
Bugger all that fitness stuff…..you’ll never be better prepared if you just ride your bike…………., ride your bike in sand, ride your bike some more and then to top it off…..ride your bike in sand!!!!
The more time you spend on the bike working the exact muscle groups you’ll be using and regularly pushing yourself physically and mentally………the better prepared you’ll be.
Smash it up!!!!!

April 15, 2011 at 1:30 am #199467Thanks fellers. Some good info there.
I have a resonable practice track which is an old sand quarry so almost raw sand. I might hit that a bit more than fitness training.
I am only running the standard tank (6.2L) so I will refuel each lap. It will make me lose time but at least I won’t run the risk of running out.
I am hoping to get there the week before and my cousin from Mildura knows Smarty resonably well, so he is trying to set me up with a practice run with him. Hopefully that will sort my gearing out. I will take a few combinations with me to try.
I will take two pair of goggles with me. A set of Roll Offs for when I’m in the thick of it (Prolouge and the first lap) an another pair to swap between each refuel.
April 16, 2011 at 7:43 pm #199496IMHO can’t see what all the hype of Hattah is about. Will never go back there, heaps of better races elsewhere that are enjoyable

I guess everyone likes different terrain. I like sand but then I may have your same opinon by the end of the race. But I won’t know unless I go!

Club enduros rate higher than Hattah on my list, from what I’ve heard Transmoto was a good event, Yellow Mountain is rated highly by nearly everyone that has had a go. I’ll even go as far as saying Finke is better.
April 18, 2011 at 1:51 pm #199708I’m doing club enduro’s but only Pony Express.
Finke is on my list for next year. It was supposed to be this year but I can’t make it due to family matters so I figured I would have a go at Hattah this year instead.
April 18, 2011 at 2:21 pm #199711I reckon go you good thing, I have no interest in Hattah but reckon it’s awesome that you are doing it. Please PM me your address and I will send you some OBT stickers for your bike mate
Good luck and please keep us updated as I know I for one will be watching this thread with interest

April 18, 2011 at 2:33 pm #199712Thanks mate PM sent.
I’ve never done a ride report but I will do my best to make it interesting. :pinch:
May 5, 2011 at 6:50 pm #199468With about 7 weeks to go I thought I would give a bit of an update on how preparation is going.
Fitness training is going well. The bit of a beer gut that I have been growing over the past 15 or so years is nearly gone and a six pack is starting to take shape. I’m feeling better on the bike and feel pretty good after a 15 min moto at the local MX club practice days. I have been riding a bit of sand but still need to pick up the pace a bit more yet.
As many of you would know with a morgage, two kids and a wife thats 7 months pregnant, the finances are quite low. I spent most of the easter break out west of Bourke mustering Feral Goats on a property that my old’s caretake.. The money I got for them has eased the burden a little. I can now get a few bits I need for the bike.
I ordered my race numbers last night from Ringmaster Images (#604). I would have liked to get pre printed back grounds like the pros but individual numbers will have to do. I will put them on just prior to scrutineering.
I already fitted Bark Busters and a Force Bash plate a few months ago.
The MSC steering damper has been fitted. It is the old one off my 09 YZ. With a few alterations I have got it to fit the 2011 YZ. I just hope it dosen’t fall off. If it dosen’t work I wil just have to but a new mount kit from MSC.
I have fitted Steg Pegz and they work a treat. They are great when standing up which I feel I will be doing alot of at Hattah.
I will be making an order soon for a set of Dunlop Geomax MX51, two pair of goggles, new chain and sprockets, a Fox Titan Sport Jacket (the old air-frame is 10 yr old and stuffed) and a few other odds and ends.
I will also grease the swingarm linkages and replace the fork seals/oil before I go.
Watch this space!!
May 5, 2011 at 6:54 pm #199469Nice one Gib :cheer:
Mate of mine rides with steg pegz…he reckons they are the ducks nuts.
I’m feeling nervious for you all ready !!!
Good luck with the rest of your prepBol :woohoo:
June 1, 2011 at 7:51 pm #199470A few bits and peices have turned up. :woohoo:
I have already swapped the Fox sport jacket (pictured above) for another Titan Airframe as it isn’t compatable with my Leatt although many people said it was. The back peice also hangs down on your bum which means you either tuck it into your pants with your jersey (very uncomfortable) or wear it over your jersey, which I didn’t want to do.
I will fit the new tyres, race numbers and sponsors stickers just before I leave so the bike looks its best on scrutineering night.I have sent my suspension to Warren Smart for him to work his magic. Many people strongly recomended that this be done and that I would be a compleat idiot for trying to do Hattah with standard suspension.
I still have a fair bit to do to the bike but I am getting though that now as there is not much riding being done with no forks or shock on it.I booked accomadation today. Motels and caravan parks are starting to fill quickly now as ‘Hattah’ is less than 4 weeks away. I will drive to Mildura a few days before the event to get some practice in and to do any final adjustments to the suspension.
My wifes due date is less than 2 weeks away so the focus is going away from Hattah and more towards her at present but training is going well.
June 1, 2011 at 8:18 pm #202353Great work Gibbit, I have stickers now so PM your address and I will mail asap
