As all going are aware the start for this ride is Lighting Ride, plan is to meet there on Saturday afternoon (the 8th) where you will need to organise your accommodation for that night. .

There are two groups riding to the start ,they are Mickp’s group leaving from the central coast area on Friday the 7th for a two day ride to Lightning Ridge for the start. IN BLUE BELOW

The other group will be starting from Grafton on saturday the 8th riding to Lighting Ridge for the afternoon meet up. IN RED BELOW

From there it is one group on our route to the end, a route that will be able to be done by one and all going no more split groups

After a round table discussion at St. Albans with some experienced adventure riders its been decided that their will be some minimum requirements for all bikes to minimise the chance of unnecessary breakdowns.

    All bikes shall;
Have a minimum of 500km fuel range , how this is achieved is up to you (large tank, rotopaks or jerry cans)
Have new tyres suitable to travel the 4000km
Ultra Heavy duty tubes fitted (Michelin, Bridgestone or Metzeler only)
New brake pads front and rear
New chain and sprockets front and rear
New wheel bearings front and rear
A full service covering suspension linkages, cush drives, steering head bearings, checking of clutch and throttle cables and basic oil and air filter maintenance.
carry a tool kit suited to your machine and spare parts that will be necessary ( if you need oil and filter change, air filter cleaner and oil etc)
Be able to carry camping gear and food as pubs and motels aren’t planned or guaranteed

Its also essential to have ambulance cover as its very expensive to get air lifted. Also NRMA cover is cheap insurance if your bike can’t be repaired , they will at least get you to a nearby mechanic.

We will have sat phones for safety and a number of spot trackers.

Keep a look out for some adventure bike set up tips within this thread as some of the more experienced riders have been asked whats in their bumbag? What do they carry on their bike ? What camping set ups work ?

    Quote Nickj:
This ride will officially begin in Lightning ridge on sunday 9th October. We will meet in Lightning Ridge on the Saturday evening (the 8th) where a pub will be booked for the night .

There are two groups riding to the start ,they are Mickp’s group from the central coast area up via Tamworth (we think )and on through to Lightning Ridge for the start.

The other group will be starting early from Grafton riding around 750km in total on mainly dirt roads we estimate 12-13 hours in the saddle.

After looking at arriving in Lightning Ridge on Sat arvo 8th Oct which is a distance of over 700km by direct tar, the rough plan for the Central Coast group and any others from the sydney area that want to tag along.

Depart Fri morning 7th Oct, meet up with Sydney crew on the Putty Rd (meeting point to be worked out later). Head to Tamworth for Friday night and meet up with Bollocks and any others that may come across from Wauchope/Port Macquarie.

Sat morning depart Tamworth and arrive at Lightning Ridge Sat arvo and meet up with the Grafton crew for the official start Sunday. :woohoo:

The route from Camerons will be e mailed to everyone in the days leading to everyone leaving ( those with GPSs anyway )

I am sending a tyre and a few pieces to Camerons as well, if you think you may want something out there you should give it some thought. (you may want to do an oil change if you are on a DR400 or the likes)

I have just sent a pm to strucky as he asked about the contact info we normally gather for a ride. For riders that haven’t been on a ride that’s needed it before I thought I’d paste the pm I wrote below ..

Anyone that hasn’t provided this info please pm it to me a soon as you can

What I do on the bigger rides is give each rider a lamented info sheet , one side has useful contacts on the route we are taking ie pubs, bike shops , pubs , medical centers , pubs etc. The other side has riders info. If a rider is injured or missing and we only know them as Bollocks its not much help so if I could have your real name , address and mobile number. Same for your next of kin and any medical conditions. It may never get used and that would be great but it could also be a life saver.

    Cheers

    All,

As this trip gets closer, I will be setting up a Conference Bridge(s) on a required basis. To enable more channels, it will always be after business hours. I have no doubt that we will need to discuss lots of things outside the public arena.

    Gaz

PS. Who do I PM my details to.

Anyone coming on this ride that wants tyres oil or the likes at the halfway point Camerons Corner, please pm me and we can arrange to drop spares at the corner when I pass through in July. If you are not in Sydney I will be happy to purchase tyres, oil or any spares that you need stored there and you can fix me up at the Corner. I will be taking a litre of unifilter oil and some turps, greese etc plus oil for a change and rear tyre. Lets try and keep things to a minimum ie we can share filter oil etc.
I leave Sydney on the 2nd July so you need to let me know as soon as poss!!
