Although this is in the adventure thread its not just adventure riding based and I would like as many peoples helpful and useful input to what they have in theirs or good ideas they have.
There was an around table discussion during the 3 state ride regarding bum bags and what do people carry. The below is my adventure setup, I dont wear the bumbag on the Tenere I put the bumbag contents into a tool roll and that goes in the bottom of the left side pannier. The fender bag just gets moved between the XR and the Tenere, on the front for the XR and then left side pannier on the Tenere (the new front guard on the Tenere will see the bag put on the front guard) The other small bag goes in my back bag no matter what bike I ride. I am guilty of not wearing my bag at times on half day rides on the XR when Crash is with me as we have the same gear, but I have the fender bag and back pack spares kit.
The contents have been gathered over years, no one expects everyone to carry the same but I expect everyone to have the basics. Well lets discuss that at the end.Below is what I have made up over the years the whole kit spread out
A breakdown of the contents includes
Two pieces of chain (different chains on the XR and Tenere one is an O ring and the other a fibre washer style) Tube of quick metal for repairs to engine cases, fuel tanks etc, salastic and a length of radiator hose the can be straightened etc in an emergency
Assorted bolts including sprocket bolts and nuts, fuses, split pins and washers
Tyre gauge and insulation tape
Another compartment more nuts and bolts etc
In the main compartment is a 1/4 drive socket set with 8, 10, 12, 13, and 14mm sockets. Also an adapter for Torx and screw driver bits. I dont have torx head bolts but have had two rides changed because of a need for torx drivers, multi screw driver and allen keys
Tie wire, cable ties and lengths of hose different diameters
Pointy nosed vice grips (have seen them used as a gear stick to get a bike home) pilers, spark plug spanner, clutch and front brakes levers and chain breaker (top left corner)
Two motion pro tyre levers which has my wheel spanners built into the end, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14 and 17mm combination spanners (ring one end open the other) 2 spoke spanners (one fits my wheels, the other one everybody elses) spark plug in the water proof holder and a Tenere front axle removing tool (home made)That’s my bumbag done, I also carry the below zip up bag in my backpack
There is all is, so to break it down
Clutch and brake levers
Spare joining links for the Tenere and XR chains and the rest for others, not many people seem to carry joining links
Hose clamps for hoses
Spark plugs for mine and some others
Barkbuster end mounts, how many trail rides you seen them fall off, I reckon I lead barkbuster stuff more than anything else
Spare lengths of fuel hose and the radiator hose repair tape
Side stand spring, I lost one in the Condo years ago cost me heaps of time (tie wire the ends stops them falling off)
Rubber gloves, cheaper than the doctor Beats putting greasy hands back in your glovesThat leaves only my fender bag
All the contents
Front tube fits a rear in a pinch (no pun intended Ollie)
Three gas bottles, two bottle adapters, valve tool and spare valves and stem nuts
Patch kit, never used one since I was 14 and never will I hope
Pump
Long stroke pump, faster to pump up and less workI also carry a set of spare rear brake pads although they aren’t shown in the pictures cause I couldn’t find them
It does seem a lot but I tell you Chickens bum bag has more than mine in it.
I know Nick and Boulder are going to have input to this thread as should everyone.
What are the basics a trailrider should carry do you think?

May 7, 2011 at 11:47 pm #200750thats a lot of gear in there TB more parts than i got in the shed i think.i just carry the genuin ktm tool bag thingy that does most bolts on the bike and comes with the bike a couple of screw drivers and some tyre levers a pump and co 2 canasta and a front tube and sometimes a small fold up wood saw . most importantly some munchies are hiding there somewhere to .these tools just come out on old bull rides when my bike brakes down or gets a flat tyre .nothing seems to happen on other rides.it all lives in my camal back
May 8, 2011 at 12:08 am #200759Ive got feeler gauges for cleaning out weeping fork seals and a Ballards mini chain breaker (its a good piece of gear). Spare gear lever………
TB has pretty well got it covered
I found the fender bags to be no good. I lost one with quite a few bucks worth of tools in it and another one came flying off but I saw it and stopped to pick it up, haven’t used one since.
No bumbag for me its all in a tool roll and put in my Camel Back
May 8, 2011 at 12:16 am #200751Yeah, good thread this one,,,,,
Mine is pretty much the same, but I also have a good quality pocket knife, a Multi tool knife & a ciggy lighter in there as well
Recently added a silver shock blanket, after we used one on the Caves to Caves ride with AidanK on his Beemer:whistle:
I do carry a smallish first aid kit in my backpack, but the blanket was an adition I thought of;)Keep the ideas coming guys
May 8, 2011 at 12:24 am #200760Yes LC bloody feeler gauge hadn’t thought of that probably because at don’t have upside down forks. Actually haven’t had a leaking fork seal since I can remember  Never lost a fender bag, have had Mick lose one of mine but  Keep the straps tight I reckon, I always thought you would see it fall off cause I have seen mine when it has come loose.
Thanks for the input LC I will chuck fork seal cleaner in
Eagle I have a first aid kit in my backpack, I used to have a cig lighter but don’t know and don’t know why. I will add one now but thanks
Thanks
TB

No bumbag for me its all in a tool roll and put in my Camel BackA couple of well placed Strong cable ties (thru metal loops on the Fender bag & aroung Fork Leg or similar point) will help in that situation LC:whistle: I did almost lose mine once but the cable ties tip I picked up elsewhere helped a lot;)
Also forgot to mention that I carry a torch too ,,,,,
And along the lines of an “ICE TAG” but El Cheapo, I have a laminated sheet with a copy of my licence, emergency contact details, Blood Type etc etcMight try & do some pics tomorrow arvo if I can find all my gear (it`s downstairs somewhere in the Man Cave)

May 8, 2011 at 12:20 pm #200775Between you blokes I wouldn’t have to carry anything.
Seriously though Tim and I carry most of the things you have mentioned. Being two of us its handy to be able to split the gear up. The only other thing we carry is our trusty slings which we do use frequently.
Cheers

Ummmmmmmm, I do believe that it was you TB, that actually strapped that fender bag to my bike from memory.
Like Eagle said, you wont lose a fender bag if you zip tie it to your bike through the loop in the zipper.
May 8, 2011 at 1:08 pm #200753I have most of the above in my bumbag although i don’t like mine too heavy.
So i try and have my tools do multiple jobs.
I carry a leather man because it has pliers and screw drivers as well as knife, saw, bottle and can opener.
I have a tee bar 1/4 drive that i can also use with screw driver bits.
My levers are zip tied to the bikes frame inside the airbox, not my idea got it off the web, but means i have more sapce in the bum bag.
Tyre levers with various sized hex heads cut in them, spanners, spark plug spanner, chain breaker, bolts, tye wire, tape, spark plugs, allen key set, joining links, axle spanner, cleaning rag and other stuff i have forgotten.
In the back pack there is a tyre repair kit including front tube, co2 bottles, valve attachment, tube repair kit, hand pump and pressure gauge.
Also i include a small first aid kit and a lighter, if it looks like bad weather i throw in one of those cheap rain ponchos.
I don’t use a fender bag as i just don’t like having weight on my front fender.
I must admit that i carry tools that mainly fit my bike (as we found out on the birthday party pre-run) my hats off to TB for carrying spares for others.:huh:Rebore

May 8, 2011 at 2:12 pm #200754Ok firstly this is not a piss take and I’m being serious, If the mods feel the attached photo is not appropriate please feel free to delete it. With everyone carrying so much gear in there bumbags including me be real careful how you position tools inside your bumbag that are near your body.
Below is a photo after I had been over the bars and landed on my back the force of hitting the ground broke my neckbrace and I honestly thought I had done severe damage to my back. As the bruise developed you could clearly see the outline of the spanners I was carrying in my bumbag in the bruise. That was a fox bumbag that has the tool part up against your body. Now when I pack my kelly bumbag I give myself a bit of padding between the tools and my body.
May 8, 2011 at 2:12 pm #200755I love the vice grips for a gear lever to get you out of the bush, that’s awesome TB, I’m putting vice grips in my bag now.
Great idea.I have never thought about how I pack my bag, I will now, thanks Bowie for the tip.

May 8, 2011 at 2:27 pm #200756Another question to ad to this thread.
Do you carry it over your bum…or around the front?
I carry mine at the front, feels like it protects my small gut …but seeing the photo,i might end up with a spanner in my guts  …(mostly snakes and ciggies in my bum bag anyway)
