My brother inlaw, recently aquired a Buell M2 Cyclone that has been in a shed for 5 years. He dropped it off at my place for me to get it going for him, he said it was making a wild noise from the output shaft/front sprocket area when you wheeled the bike.
Any bloody wonder!!!! Imagine my thoughts when I pulled the side cover off and discovered this abortion !!
Some dickhead had welded the front sprocket onto the shaft and when the weld broke they endevoured to then hold it in place with a big wad of silastic. Why would you do that to a bike, with only 12,000km on the clock?
The stupidity of some people never fails to amaze me.

How is the belt drive pulley normally retained Mick? Are you sure there arent other options like the end of the shaft drilled in place and threaded. You could then retain it with a plate washer style setup like other bikes have
Could be worth exploring your options before getting someone to help you pull it all down :blink:
Are you putting it back the the factory belt drive system they have?

I have no idea why they converted it to a chain and sprocket drive. As the rear wheel has no Cushdrive I imagine the pulses put out by the V Twin would be doing no good to the sprockets at all. We will certainly explore the option of re installing the Belt and pulleys, as old mate he got it from says he has the pulleys “somewhere”.

You a Harley mechanic now. Great news as I may need one some day. Just bought me a 2009 Dyna Super Glide 1584cc. Should have done it years ago. Bloody love it.

Start early and you’d make for a counter lunch at the local with time to spare. :laugh:

May 19, 2011 at 1:06 pm #201510Well I have still been dicking around with the Buell. The sprocket problem has been sidelined for the time being. First job is to see if the thing will actually run before we spend money fixing it.
I got the battery out of the Harley and hooked it all up, the motor winds over but wasn’t sounding like it wanted to start. A quick squirt of ether in the carby got it to fire briefly so that ruled out lack of spark. ( I can see the purests now cringing at the mention of ether based spray) :ohmy:
So I decided the problem is in the carby, mainly because I wound out the drain screw and nothing came out, blocked, I thought. Harley/Buell carbies are a breeze to remove despite all the hoses and cables in what appears too be hard to reach places. A couple of minutes saw the carby out.Being a CV carb, it isn’t all unlike the ones in XR’s so I was confident to pull the bowl off it and have a poke around and see what the problem was.
Do you think this might be stopping it from starting? The main jet seems to be blocked a little.The bowl had a bit of shit in it too. :ohmy:
