Ok,
With the addition of the Touratech racks on the 690 this week, I wanted to add some simple backing plates to the rack so the Andy Strapz Bags don`t hang thru the rack. I had seen MickP`s ally flatbar type arrangement on his racks last week, also saw a guy that had some plastic webbing on his on another site,,,
My first thoughts were to have some extra lugs welded on (similar to the Wolfman Racks) but thought I`d have a go at a simple setup for a while. So I had a brainstorm this arvo & came up with this idea,
Take standard rack
Find an old storage crate with unneeded or busted lid
Mark out & cut desired shape from lid (in this case I got 2 out of one
Note the rectangular holes for straps to go thru & small holes for attachmentSimply attach to rack with ties
Then away you go with a fairly sturdy backing plate
Note,,, my Barrett Pipe has heaps of clearance & cools very quickly (I can place my hand on it less than 5 mins after a ride) so heat shouldn`t be a problem with the plastic
You could also use alloy sheet instead, but I gave this a go firstJune 2, 2011 at 10:48 pm #202424Nice work Eagle !! Will it be ready for the tamworth to lightning Ridge ride
June 2, 2011 at 10:50 pm #202425Yeah,, but,,,,
No I am not on any big rides just yet mateHave a lot of work to do here the next few months mate  Work that has to be done
My time will come though, wait & see
June 2, 2011 at 10:54 pm #202434Good work beags, from memory that plastic is kinda brittle hope it holds up, would you consider a thin sheet of aluminium that you can get from bunnings to do the same job..
Chris with 2c
June 2, 2011 at 10:54 pm #202435Maybe I should have read it all before I posted DUH!
June 2, 2011 at 10:58 pm #202426Yeah, but this lid is quite tough & flexible actually (not brittle at all)
Ally was my first thought, but this was lying around & good for the first prototypeI may still go with a flatbar or extra lugs longterm, undecided as yet which way to go.
And thanx for the 2c, my bank account is growing , virtually

June 2, 2011 at 11:12 pm #202428NO, Thats why they are easily removable,,,
Whole rack comes off with 8 screws mate (5 minute job)Cheers,
I have some Shedtime to do now, night all :cheer:June 2, 2011 at 11:15 pm #202441Good night possum
June 2, 2011 at 11:28 pm #202442Hey Beags if you step up to alloy mate like the backing plates for the Rotopax youmcan attach them with P clamps
I like the backing plates mate and the design but I think the plastic will break, the stress with bags swinging bouncing is a bit eh, but I could be wrong again
If you do require some P clamps in the future let me know as I have a source
TB
June 3, 2011 at 12:54 am #202429Yeah TB,
That was oe of my ideas (the Rotopax System) for in the future , you read my mindWill source some ally plate later on just like that then , and the P Clamps
I have just come up from adding the Heatshield that I got with the racks a while back,,,
I have modded slightly (he had it double layered but I think he had the standard hot pipe )
I temporarily attched it with solid ties till I test run it to check the heat etc (I did have some stainless steel ties somewhere but have misplaced them in the move)
I don`t want to screw or bolt it on just yet,,,,Might have a short road run this weekend if time permits (kids sport is full on this week)
More later

Actually No mate, they don`t,,,
It goes where it is now, He had it bolted thru the guard into the tail tidy thingy :dry:I have added one more hole & tie this morning & all is tight & fits well. May get a test in the next week if I am lucky
Loaded tent, chair & stuffed the bags to simulate a load as well, just need a rear rack of sorts to rearrange the tent to access fuel filler quicker. At the moment, it is only to undo two occy straps and remove tent, but that will change in timeCheers
