I am giving a mate a hand to remove his shock to get serviced and before I start it is it as simple as the gasser where I removed the two mount bolts and slide it out or is there more to it?

Because of the linkage setup it will not slide through. Remove top and bottom bolts, undo the sub frame and bend the sub frame towards the left of the bike and pull the shock up and out. This saves having to pull the boot on your airbox.

Pull the swingarm and pull it through the bottom is another way. This will also give you a chance to grease and inspect swingarm bearings etc. I can tell you, you can have the greatest and worlds best shock but unless you have good greased moving pivot points you dont get the best from your suspension.

Given it is an 04 model it could be overdue

    +1

The steel frame yz’s and WR’s were notorious for seizing up on the Swing Arm shaft, I would remove the whole swingarm ;)

One of my mates 04 wr450 snapped a linkage arm because it was never serviced. I replaced all the bearings in my WR as they were all totally rusted. My guess is that most of them will be in throw away state. Probably an obvious statement but make sure you can get your hands on a new set of bearings quickly as I had to wait with the bike on bits. :(

i do my bikes every 6 months with a grease at singarm pivot and linkage bolts this is a problem for any bike, the cr i rebuilt i had to put the frame into a press to push the swingarm bolt out it was that siezed up,
for the cost of a couple of cans of bourban and a cartridge of grease on a friday night every 6 months its a simple but effective part of your maintenance

+1 every six months, or, if the other half is cranky, every second friday night 😆
