Hi Guys,
Just wondering what size pilot jets people are running on there 530’s? We’ve done the end cap mod on my sons bike to open up the exhaust and now its popping on deceleration with no throttle. It has always popped since we purchased the bike and now its even worse turning the fuel screw in 2.5 turns has made it slightly better but its still popping on deceleration with no throttle.April 2, 2010 at 7:32 pm #175251The 530 is jetted fairly lean from the factory and opening up the pipe will make it “pop” somewhat. Once we fitted the Akrapovic with out the end cap the popping got even worse, even to the stage that in low light you would see a blue flame come out the exhaust!!.
You could try this, move the clip down one notch (richen) and change the pilot to a 45 or 48. Turn the air/fuel mixture screw out 1.75 turns and you are done.
You probably wont fully eliminate the popping but it will minimise it. If it is really bothering you and you are looking for a bit more power, you could get yourself a JD jetting kit for it.
Also it may help if you seal where the headers join to the muffler. A hi temp sealant will do the job but dont start it for 24 hrs so the sealant can cure.
April 2, 2010 at 10:06 pm #175261i run a 45 pilot jet in mine tryed 48 to rich (had a 40 in it ) and a 190 main (was 180 standard)have nown people to run 195 mains in them with a acropovic found it to rich with my fmf pipe.i just run the clip in the middle with the needle they put in it when de restricted at the shop ?.bike should run a bit cooler to .it still pops a bit think its a ktm thing .allso would not hert to check the valve clearence that can do it to .the valves don t move much on them but

AnonymousBring some jets to Coffs and we can have a play, it won’t take long. Have you stuck the needle down a clip like we spoke about the other day?
What jets are currently in there? I’d change them as per Alan’s (Rocket) specs as his bike has been running fine and gets plenty of use. If you do this puts the fuel screw back to standard to start off with too.
You could always weld the pipe back in  On one hand he complains it’s too powerful, then on the other he wants to do mods to make it more powerful
April 6, 2010 at 10:28 am #175407Yes we dropped the needle one notch and he fitted a switch to the bars so you can change the power mode, we could’nt get any jets over the weekend so the pilot is still the standard 40 and the fuel screw is out at 2.5turns, we will get some jets and have a play.
We went to Amamoor yesterday and he was grizzling about everything from arms aching to no grip then too much grip!!!!, we ended up swapping bikes for the rest of the day, he is much more confidant on the WR so the Kato’s looking like its mine Ha Ha HaApril 6, 2010 at 11:24 pm #175441
AnonymousSweet, you got an upgrade then!
Whilst we’re doing the jetting of the 530 you can refill the oil in my right fork leg, it all leaked out due to some crap stuck in the seal!
April 7, 2010 at 9:27 pm #175470Hey mike
I own an 07 525
I’m running a 185 main jet, 45 pilot, needle 5th from the top and mixture screw out 2 1/2 turns. Running a standard pipe with the end cap mod. Has had slight popping in the past but it was fixed with high temp silastic (red in colour) as Micknmeld mentioned :woohoo: She runs a tad rich but I’m happy with it as it now has over 11500kms on the clock. Not sure if that helps mate
Good luck with it
Cheers
MurphApril 7, 2010 at 11:33 pm #17549611,500kms! That’s a good run Murph well done! I still say you should chuck a paddle on it and take it to WA with you, we went out to stockton on Monday and man it was fun!
April 11, 2010 at 10:16 am #175497Hey Murph
Thanks for that mate we had a play around with the jetting and that over the weekend, its now running the needle in the middle, 45 pilot and still the same 180 main jet with the fuel screw now 1 1/2 turns out. We’ve also sealed the headers with a high temp sealent its still pops a little but not as bad as it was, its running good now and starts fine so i think were gonna leave it as is now the popping seems to be a ktm thing from what ive heard.April 11, 2010 at 10:24 am #175712if you want to make it crack a bit harder get a vented airbox sidecover they help TB put me onto them cheap performance mod in the hardparts catalog just put the standard one on when its pissing down.

AnonymousRocket – that will make it run lean again and the popping they have just tried to get rid of will get worse again.
If you really want to do it drilling a series of holes in the cover and glue some mesh/gause inside the cover and it will cost you nothing.
I used the angle grinder on my 450 to cut a slot in the cover.
April 11, 2010 at 11:19 pm #175733what if it rains moto and you got holes in your sidecover????worked on my bike runs sweet created more power everywhere
April 11, 2010 at 11:39 pm #175738
Anonymous> When riding along at anything above 5Km/h the rain doesn’t ‘fall’ into the cutout.
> The cutout is relatively small.
> If water does even dribble into the cutout it falls to the bottom of the airbox and dribbles out.
> I don’t ride in the rain  Actually I have ridden it in torrential downpours many times without any issues.
> How is your vented side cover going to be any better in the rain?Your bike is only running better because you are running it leaner (improves throttle response and low end snap). I’ve done this Matty’s 450, my 450 and my 300. Tom’s bike (Mike’s son) was already running lean, the new jetting has helped this somewhat, cutting holes will bring a problem back they are trying to get ride of. Also, the last thing Tom needs is more power, it’s a handful for him as it is!
It’s a good mod if you’re not already running lean and if you do want more snap, however, in this particular case I think it’s going against what Mike/Tom are trying to achieve
April 12, 2010 at 12:00 am #175742when its wet moto you just put the standard sidecover on (not one cut up by grinder) bit more hardcore out here ride in the rain the tracks are like rivers also use a raincoat filter skin from the hardparts catolog the ktm airboxs are not very waterproof.ps i thought you were an engineer -more air plus more fuel=more power
April 12, 2010 at 12:23 am #175745you could always use a strip of Gaffer tape over the hole/slot when it gets wet or you are going to cross a deep bit of water.
Just a thought
