A mate of mine’s riding buddy died this way mid way through 09. They took off from brisbane and about an hour into the ride they noticed old mate wasn’t sweeping anymore and turned around to come across the scene. Messed my mate up for quite a while
January 11, 2010 at 9:38 pm #167941Mr Blue you are so on the money. A bloke I know has just done exactly as you described.
Got his first roady ever in his 50’s and has fallen off half a dozen time. Even crashed going slowly around a round about. If you see a Ulyss’s rally get out of the way fast.
I used to live in Victoria and many an RDO was spent on the GOR. Always left the weeks to to tourist.
January 12, 2010 at 8:26 pm #168013Old mate is still in a bad way. read about it here.

January 12, 2010 at 8:32 pm #168053makes you wonder what would happen if we just overshot a corner on some of the trails we all ride on, I quite often pull up and have a look around and some of the drops from the side of the fire trails can be quite daunting, another good reason to ride with a buddy and or do head counts following these types of trails,as if someone goes over it can be a while before its noticed, and trying to find them is near impossible.

PS
Thanks for the update Mick.January 12, 2010 at 9:31 pm #168054Guess there will be some increased police presence when we go up there at the end of the month Mick. Lucky I am a law abiding citizen

They have been patroling it fairly heavily for a year or two now. Especially on the straights either side of the mountain.

What a load of Bullshit !! Its a public road you ride to the conditions. Go to a race track otherwise christ sake what do they want a bloody street sweeper to do the road of a morning.
This shits me so much, people in the world wont take responsibility for their own actions. Piss off you whinging tool !!!

January 14, 2010 at 10:04 pm #168231So if it so dangerous why ride it?, I’ll tell you why because it is so challenging and dangerous…
otherwise it would never get ridden.. DOH
and the whinger in the port mac local, notice the jacket and what I was saying about their lairy outfits…?
what happened to good old black leathers for protection not for Milan or boulevarde cruising.
As stated you ride to the conditions and if you come unstuck in a single vehicle accident, I’m sorry who else is there to blame?

I think the guy from the Ulysses club that wrote about the road needs to have a big think. I am not always the most responsible person around but always take responsibility for my actions and believe so should everyone. That article in the paper degrades the mentally of all the Ulysses club members in the public’s eyes and he needs an uppercut for his thoughts, its a public road

January 19, 2010 at 1:13 am #168754You know the Road Mick what’s your take?
Me personally it’s been a few years but it is a “challenging road and so you never ride at 10/10ths on it, leave something in reserve cause after all it is a Public road. furthermore what type of bike was he riding and what type of tyre? if he was on a cruiser with boulevarde rubber and hits gravel well, he has as much right to whinge as a bloke riding firetrails with bridgy battlax 106s on his bike….

January 19, 2010 at 1:37 am #168755I have done that road more times than I could count over the last 25 years. The last time I was up there last year, a bike had just taken out a Nissan Pathfinder, looking at the marks on the road and the car, rider error was the obvious cause.
My take is it is a great road if ridden to the conditions. I have come over at night on a GPZ1100 in the middle of winter and black ice and wallabies are an issue. What do the Ulysses want to do about those two problems I wonder? Hit a wallaby and the National parks are to blame??An over night gully raker can spread gravel across the road in no time and there will be no signs there to tell you of the problem if you are one of the first on the mountain for the day. There are certain sections that see no sun EVER and can stay wet for days after rain, they can give you a nasty surprise too.
So as Bruce says never ride on the limit. One other contributor to accidents is guys riding in groups and riding beyond their ability in order to stay with the pack.
