I also forgot a few things Moto, always dry your tiedowns out after they get wet, under cover, they sunrot too.
one bike = two sets of tiedowns…spare set behind rear seat in my ute, along woth towropes, ocky straps(x20), and ratchet ties
Two bikes = three sets of tiesdowns
three bikes = four sets etcNever trust your mates tie downs if he uses yours on his bike and says he didn’t notice, chances are his are dodgy and he knows it.
Above all good quality like Ancra pays off in the long run.
You’re a lucky lucky Young fella Moto, don’t imagine what could’ve been it’ll bring tears to yer eyes.

I agree 100% with Bruce. I use my straps on my bike and don’t trust a strap I have not paid for and looked after myself.
Ancra is the best brand by far. I have Aerpro and some other brand sitting around as spares – and hope I don’t have to use them. No-name brand straps should be used for walking the dog and nothing more. And ALWAYS carry spare tie downs.
I must admit that when I have my bike on the back of the ute, loaded in diagonally, I don’t strap the rear wheel, but that is the only time. In my defence, the bike sits in tightly and will stand there with no ties on it because it is jammed in. Otherwise the rear is strapped as well. On a long trip I will also add a rope to the front straps, just as a backup.
September 7, 2009 at 7:50 pm #151372My brother Ant,towed his two Katos ( a 530 exc and a 990 adventure)from Wauchope to Melbourne over night. Brand new straps all round. Imagine his surprise when as daylight broke some where near Albury, he glanced in the mirror to see the $20,000 uninsured 990 Adventure, complete with panniers hanging out over the side of the trailer with a snapped 400kg rated tiedown flapping in the wind.. He had no idea how long it had been laying on its side in the darkness and why the cam had chewed through the new strap.
Ollies suggestion of tying the bars together has merit, as in this case the 530 would had stopped the 990 from laying over like it did.September 7, 2009 at 8:26 pm #151381Yeah I remember that Mick, you wondered why I was tying the bars together when I loaded the XR and CRF at your place
I use both ratchet straps and cam lock, never had a problem with either if you have quality products and use them correctly
Moto’s straps are real good straps and it was just unfortunate that they rubbed and broke and ruined a good strap

AnonymousCheers for all the ideas guys, despite my lazyness with maintainence I did look after my straps and did get decent quality ones (never heard of Ancra or know where to buy them).
The cause of the problem was the trailer and my failure to relaise that the strap had the potential to move as far as it did rub on the knife egdge that is the trailer channel. ANY strap would have broken under the circumstances unless it was rubber/PVC coated or mate of metal.
I have spare straps (crappy ones) that until last weekend sat in the boot of my car, after buying shelving for the garage they were removed and neatly packed away, typical! I had already ordered some Protaper ones from the States but will get 2 extra pairs now as I will be taking both bikes to Coffs in just under 2 weeks time.
I have faith in the camlock system and did already tie the ends off in case the cam slips

AnonymousMoto, if you require some mods to be done to your trailer I am happy to do any welding etc. I do not confess to being the worlds best welder but everything I have done so far has held together. The offer is there if you want anything done, you will just have to bring the trailer to my place is all.
September 7, 2009 at 11:43 pm #151420
AnonymousWhat you can’t even be bothered to get off your fat arse and bring the welder to me?
No that’s tops mate, I may well take you up on the offer as I wouldn’t mind getting the floor filled in at some point. I could just get some mesh and screw it in place though I suppose. I also wanted to tack weld a couple of bolts in the trailer for the ramp to save the bolt falling out everytime I want to take it off
I also need to weld up my old trailer after taking to it with the grinder. I bet you wish you never offered now

I may have enough mesh laying around home to fill your floor in. I am free on Saturday to do the mods if you want at my place – I don’t drive as far as your place even when I go on holiday

AnonymousCould be a plan mate, I don’t know which day I’m riding yet though. You and TB are coming with me on one of them, you just don’t know it yet
I’m keen to test out your welding skills though, we could make a day of it and mount my toolbox too
Operation ‘Trailer for the ghey sailor’ is a go!
September 8, 2009 at 1:30 am #151447
AnonymousOK – sounds like a goer
If you want your toolbox mounted as well you may need to get some angle or RHS to lay across the drawbar to mount the box. Have you got a toolbox yet? If not I have a spare one laying around that I found on the kerbside pick-up only problem is it looks a bit ratty and may detract from your nice new trailer.
Give me a call to work out what you want done and what will be needed to get operation “Trailer for the ghey sailer” underway.
