is quite common on smokers that have an incorrect float height and yes they go out of adjustment as the needle and seat wear a little or just plain vibration and terrain

Hey Mr Blue I am not one to argue with yourself but whilst riding around in the heat today I got to thinking about the needle and seat going out of adjustment. Firstly I think that they run a rubber tipped needle so I cant see it wearing a great deal on a bike that hasn’t done 700kms yet. Even if it had a full brass set up how much wear would have to have in the needle and seat to cause the float to be out 1mm, remembering a hell of a lot as you would know a needle and seat needs only the tiniest tiny smallest wear to cause other fuel issues before surging over humps.
Sorry I could be and am happy to be wrong but to be fine one afternoon then surge when low enough to warrant switching to reserve and have an on going problem the next morning with a full tank doesnt sound like the float adjusted itself.
Could have dragged some shit through on the low level as you suggested with myself and others

I was in the middle of writing this mate.

Well I pulled the carbi out on Monday and removed the bowl drain plug. There was a small amount of black crap (about the size of a pin head) in bottom of the plug. Not sure what it was but I was soft and broke up when got it out. Probably just accumulated crap from the tank.

I then removed the bowl and found another bit of crap floating around. This one looked a bit like a tiny ball of silastic. Don’t know if it was silastic but it’s gone now. I put the carbi back in and the bike started (which is a win for me).

Yesterday was the first opportunity to give it a run. As you can see from TBs videos it seems to be running ok. When we went down the back I run the bike over the area where it was playing up and had no signs of hesitation. So I’m claiming a win.

    Thanks everyone for the advice.

    TB checking for fuel issues.

Excellent news Mal, TB i do agree, but was going back to basics where before anything else check float level, yep ye’re right they don’t often go out of adjustment and have a teflon tip on most of the needles these days.
Also failed to remember this was a near new steed too, as for a float to be 1mm out of whack at the check point requires less than .1mm wear at the seat area, we are s’posed to replace the needle if any visible signs of wear are evident, but hardly anyone does as the pricing is prohibitive unles flooding is occuring, also you can actually lean or richen your mixture by cheating with the float levels too…. ;)

Mal if it happens again on the trail just remove the 17mm inspection plug at the base of the bowl and turn your fuel tap on for a few seconds and it should flush any crap out, be careful about residual fuel and fires though…..

Dick would pull the carburettor of strip clean and blow everything out count the jets out and write it down the number of turns so you can put it all back the same and check the float level at the same time
Dick thinks your float level should not change but worth checking Dick would maybe lift it a mm or two not more as Dick said if it was ok before it does not just change last resort maybe.
As an after thought Dick would pull the pick up from the tank does the bike you have run a screen worth a check also

Like Dick said screen in the pick up as well Mal worth a check You are welcome

Thanks Blue. I had been told to remove the plug when it happened. But it’s good to post up and get the advice I did. And I always think the worst when the bike is not running properly. I have checked that I have a 17mm spanner in the bum bag too.

Dick. uummm thanks too I think.. Nah mate I will check the pickup.

You are the gugru and we will bow to you from now on.

Good to see it was any easy fix Mal B) Has anyone used those filter socks that go in the neck of the tank? Apparently they are a pretty good thing and Aussie made as well.

I thought of using one of them socks Ollie but can’t remember who makes them. I think Tuffy from Trailrider was testing one for a few issues. I’ll see if I can find them.
