Got any photos of the ‘Big Ugly Whipps’ Spidy Dude?

February 17, 2011 at 10:55 am #196959G’day Axel. Yes mate they were a good product and it is a shame that they ain’t around anymore. Not sure if the bloke died though as I thought I spoke with him after the car stack. He said that he was in a head on and was pretty stuffed. He had a bashy that was nearly complete to suit my 99 model 300 and was gunna finish it and send it to me. It all turned up and all was good however I may have got the story wrong or forgotten some of it. It may have been his partner/worker that I spoke with and finished it.
Mal, my Hyde bashy has busted the bolt bit off the clamp on some of them and I just put some wire through and between the clamp and the pipe and just wired that through the bashy holes and tightened it nice and tight:lol: and it seems to be holding pretty good so far.

August 28, 2011 at 2:21 am #197031Well I finally got around to knocking up a prototype cage for the expansion chamber. Not sure if it will do the job but the only way to find out is to make one and test it. If handles the rocks and crashes adequatley then I’ll make one out of lighter gauge stainless tube and one out of solid aluminium bar. For now it’s 8mm mild steel and weighs just 2kg.
Tomorrow I’m going to look at some styles of mesh to attach to the front for roost protection.
It’s only tacked in these pics, but it’s all welded now.

Hopefully it does the job and you can sell them like Rocket said and make a squillion
August 28, 2011 at 1:15 pm #207751Nice work Mal
The Nambo has it got a standard GG pipe or is it the FMF Gnarly ? if its the standard one you will probably need to make a different protector if you change pipes, The Whipps guard is 12mm (?) solid alloy got one on my old 360, can take some serious punishment.
Ollie
just looked a bit harder the pipe is standard GG 😆
August 28, 2011 at 1:58 pm #196896That’s cool Mal. Nice work.
August 28, 2011 at 3:46 pm #207768Mal,
Looks bloody good mate. My only comment is that I would consider putting in more of a gap between the pipe and the guard. I have a whipps guard on the ktm and it started out with between 25 and 50mm air space between the two. When I first got it I was worried it made the bike too wide and the gap was excessive. It did make washing the pipe easy though. Since then I have closed this gap to 0mm more than once and have had to re-bend the guard back out to get it off the pipe.
Your guard is a different shape to the whips and has different support points so hopefully it will be right. I am not criticising your work or design just trying to add some constructive advice on things to look out for.
On the width note. I have only ever once caught my guard on logs, rocks etc as I’ve tried to squish throught gaps. I used to cringe every time waiting for the crunch but it always seems to miss. I think the widest point is up high so it seems to clear things better than you expect. My guard is wide enough that when I first got it I used to hit my foot on it putting it down for corners.
August 28, 2011 at 4:00 pm #196897Neat work Mal,ive noticed with mine the most impacts it gets is upwards from bashing crossing/sliding over fallen trees.
August 28, 2011 at 4:41 pm #207773Thanks guys.
If I get a design that works Rocket then yes I plan to sell them. It’ll be while before I get to that stage.
Bundy you’re probably right with the air gap. I had a mind set when I was making that she’ll be right be then my quality control officer (the Mrs) said the same thing. I’ll see how this one goes and make another with a bigger air gap.
Always open to ideas and suggestions.
A Murphsberg ride will be the unltimate test.
August 30, 2011 at 6:16 pm #207776Bring it up Mal, I’m sure we can put it to the test somewhere.  👿
Looks the goods though, a bit of mucking about but all worth while in the end.
I’ll put an order in for Tims bike.
Always new you were one of my better apprentices. Pissing in your pocket, hoping for a discount.
Cheers
