as the title says, what are your general thoughts on the Aprilia dirt bikes?
i was cruising round the net looking to confirm my guess at the Benelli.
looked up bikesales, and out of interest looked at the Aprilia listings, as you do.
found there a few listings for the RXV 4.5 and 5.5.
there is an 08 5.5 advertised for $4,590! done 2200km, 61 hours
however the owner said it gets serviced after every 2 rides, approx. 120kms!
when i called a dealer not long after they came out, they said you cannot put dirt wheels in the SXV/motard, and you could not fit motard wheels to the RXV!
to me they are the same bike just different wheels, and maybe a few minor differences between the dirt and motard.
and you have to change the pistons after some absurdly short amount of time!
from memory something like 12hrs! and when i asked how much this would likely cost they had no idea as at that time they had not had to do one.
i asked if it was just a recommendation from Aprilia or was it a definite must do? they could not really answer that either.
i was interested in looking at one, until i was told about the short life span of the cylinders.
ok, over to you.

again like the local tart you still wanna ride it though, just to see what it goes like:unsure:BC
May 18, 2009 at 1:58 am #134673I’m not a fan. Parts are reportedly VERY expensive (try $35 for a split pin!). As you mentioned the dealers dribbled on about needing to almost rebuild them at short intervals. I have not heard reports of short piston/cylinder life in the later models though.
They do sound very cool, and get points for exotic-ness (exotica?) but when an XR, CRF, WR, KTM, TE, KLX or other does the job easily with reliability as well… why bother?
Do a search, ADV and DBW will have some info you might like to read.

May 18, 2009 at 2:16 am #134696Yeah there’s a lot of negative vibes towards them at DBW.
This build will make you drool a little though!

I just noticed his bike rack/work bench and dribbled a little
OT: I noticed a guy selling modified used hospital beds as bike work benches which I thought was a good idea.
May 18, 2009 at 2:24 am #134703Yup, have been following that thread too, but didn’t think it would be that useful to a buyer really, its pretty specialised. Saw it in the flesh at Condo. It doesn’t look quite as impressive as the pics show, mostly because a lot of the work was done underneath the fairings. The exhaust didn’t look good – but he was not happy with that and it will change. It did finish the event, which is more than a lot of other bikes can say!
May 18, 2009 at 8:11 am #134704I seen an SXV ridding down the main street of bathurst yesterday and it just looked fantastic. Even the mrs said it looked good.
I heard when the RXV first came out that were nose heavy in the air.
I’d have a 5.5 SXV with the 70hp upgrade for a track bike in a heart beat. There was one at Wakefield last time I was there and fark me did it have some go in it.

Anonymousi had a ride of one of the original 5.5s up in the buladelah mountains.
i was expecting a bike with too much surge when the throttle is first opened and too much top end.i found both to be true. however the second model changed the throttle cam to something more mild. i also found that the particular bike that i rode had scary headshake
surprisingly though. the bike handled well at the medium pace i was riding at and the power was smooth in the mid.i have heard from a single source that cases are known to crack. this is unconfirmed.
i expect they will attract more critisium due them being different.
i watched stefan merrimen ride one around the coffs 4 day. seemed really smooth under him. he is one of the smoother riders though.
May 18, 2009 at 8:50 am #134671i’m mildly interested in these bikes. but prices are a big put off.
i wonder why this bike is 1/2 to almost 1/4 of the price of other bikes of the same year?

May 18, 2009 at 9:08 am #134795I saw one in a wreckers in Melbourne early last year, was in good nick not smashed, engine was apart and I asked the guy what was its story, he said it had done 18,000kms and got dusted, quote for parts including crank kit was $5100.00 to rebuilt it, owner choose to wreck it and get $1500. The costing for a WR450 the guy said for the same including a crank kit was $1300.00, wreckers are near Cummins down there
Thats only what I was told  I dont know anymore than that.
As fathead about price and availability of simple parts, he has one that was dropped that he is repairing

AnonymousI think that to entice people onto a less aminstream bike they have to at least be a similar price. As soon as they cost more, you cripple your sales.
I’m not going to spend more money on an unkown quantity.
May 19, 2009 at 2:37 am #134910I’m with Moto, (crikey I said it again:blush: ) if it was real world affordable and reliable within reason it’d be the go.
