July 31, 2009 at 10:01 pm #146394Probably a stupid question and you’ll roll your eyes but,

Its part of the regulations I think from the FIM, but the rider must carry I think two litres of water that can be used for human consumption in the event of him becoming stranded in the desert, the carrying of water in a camel back doesnt count. It doesn’t have to be part of the bash plate but thats where most do it, some of the BMW riders on the 850’s that have a dummy muffler use it as it does nothing bar sit there empty the same as Boony’s head

Jak
This an exctract from the rules and regs from the australaisian safari .
I made a derogative smartarse remark yesterday towards a question you asked of which i had absolutally no idea of the answer too.sorry about that..apparently this is why there is a sealed fluid storage area built on to the bash plate of the safari entrants motorcycle.E. WATER PROVISIONS
At least three litres of water must be carried in at least two containers on the motorcycle and/or the riders person
when leaving a bivouac or service location where water is available. ‘Camel Back’ water containers are highly
recommended. Water should not be carried in containers with taps at the base as these can become damaged and
loss of water may occur.
Any water container having a capacity exceeding three litres must comply with Australian Standard AS2906. Two
litres of this water is for emergency use only and must not be consumed under normal circumstances (therefore the
containers should be refilled at every opportunity).
Failure to carry the amount of water specified at all times could lead to exclusion. The Organisers advise that weather
conditions will be such that temperatures up to 40 degrees centigrade during the day and down to zero at night may
be expected.Regards

Quote:Just a quick update. Saw that Benny lost an hour on the 1st SS today…here’s why!Quote:Disaster struck defending bike champion, Ben Grabham, on the massive 244 kilometre first stage of the day when he punctured a tyre.“I broke a spoke, which is normally a pretty minor problem, but it can cause you big problems when you’re out in the desert,” a philosophical Grabham said.
“The spoke then punctured the tyre and I was forced to take it off and ride on the rim until the end of the stage. I fixed that and just had to get on with in the second stage. These things are typical of the Safari – it’s not the end of the world and I’ll push on.”
Undeterred, Grabham then took over a minute off his rivals on the next stage as he aims to get his title defence back on track.
So, at the end of the day, Out in front is Todd Smith (brother of Jacob – Condo boys originally) on his KTM530. 1 and a half minutes back to brother Jacob on a CRF450, who’s 13 seconds in front of his team mate AJ.
The top 7 consist of x4 KTM530’s / x2 CRF 450’s and a WR450.Ben made up 3 and half minutes on Todd in the last SS this arvo.
What do you reckon……..Can he make up 55 minutes in 4 days?
Crash
At the halfway mark today Ben has made back 7 mins on the leaders

Ben said about his rear tyre drama
“I broke a spoke, which is normally a pretty minor problem, but it can cause you big problems when you’re out in the desert,” a philosophical Grabham said.
“The spoke then punctured the tyre and I was forced to take it off and ride on the rim until the end of the stage. I fixed that and just had to get on with in the second stage. These things are typical of the Safari – it’s not the end of the world and I’ll push on.”
Now why didnt he fit a spare tube that he would be carrying, wouldnt he? The only reason you would have a tube is if you had a mousse fitted, and they dont normally use rear mousses because they cant handle the high speeds. So he probably didnt have a mousse so would you race through 100km plus stages without a tube?
