So today I finally got the chance to spend some time on a new 2012 model WR450F. The day was spent jumping from the KTM530 to the WR450F. In its defence the WR hasn’t been to Teknik’s yet like the KTM has, it basically hasn’t had very much setup at all.
Steve and I left after the dawn services and travelled up to the Watagans. Straight away the first thing I noticed about the WR is how easy it started with the fuel injection as it was only 13 degrees. I asked to ride the 530 first as I wanted to get myself reacquainted with it as I do like the setup, power delivery and the ergos. After a run through the tight chopped up singles and back we headed down German Point track. About halfway down I swapped onto the WR, I have been itching to have a ride on it since it arrived at the workshop to be prepared for the APC rally. First thing that grabs your attention is how smooth the power delivery is. It has the most linear power of any dirt bike I have ever ridden while still delivering plenty of power compared to the 530. The brakes are strong and provide good feel. The cable clutch is light but a little bit grabby but the gearbox shift was smooth. On the second run up the hill from the bottom I was forced to stop as Steve had stopped. I watched him on the 530 use the rekulse to start of and I thought bastard there is no way I will get this going here yet it tractored up really well. On the next hill I shifted it up into third when it was defiantly a second gear hill, the engine lugged and pulled clean as the hill finished all the way to the limiter. It is very wet up there at the moment even though I didn’t like the tyres them being Metzeler 6 days (a personal preference I know) the engine provided plenty of hook up.

We swapped bikes all day, and are taking them out again on Saturday after I make some setup changes on Friday. I have to say that I am really excited now about riding it once Teknik’s finish the suspension.

I left my camera in the car so the only photos I have are of the bikes when we got back to the car. I will add to the thread after Saturday and when the suspension is done

Theirs a 10kg claimed weight difference in favor of the Yammie Eags , it’s all about where the weight sits though !! I reckon yamaha will have it sorted even though it’s 128kg dry !

I might put my hand up for a ride on one at Sunny Corner myself ,,,,
The last WR I rode was a cranky one and a lot older

Nick it steers better than the 530, it feels lighter than the tare weight says it is. There was a guy with us today that does a lot of riding (almost for a living) he rides a CRF250. He commented how nibble it felt after 20 mins on it.

Eagle having riden both a 690 and this mate they dont even compare, like lemons and strawberries (690 is the lemon  ) For the record a 690 has a claimed weight of 138.5 without fuel and the WR on the Yamaha site of 123.8 without fuel

128kg Dry, thats a worry. Considering how often I have to pick my bike up off the ground.
One of the main reasons I sold the DRZ.

I got the 128kg info from a bike mag so I’m not sure how accurate that is now Yamaha are saying 123kg.

Robs DRZ weighed in at 144kg when we weighed them at Wauchope on Leftys digital scales

I dont want this to become a weight thread but when we weighed the 530 at Wauchope it went 129 kilos, the WR feels lighter than the 530

Sounds like they are a great bike to ride.

It will be interesting to find out the differance to the handling when technic’s are finished with it.

When you ride a DRZ everything you get on feels lighter, 144kgs feels like 244kgs when you have to pick it back up :woohoo: :woohoo:

Good repert so for TB keep it comimg

    Cheers

    Weights!!!!

    Hey TB,

nice no bias report there! How about you take those corner weight scales to Birthday weekend and get some real (accesories and full fuel) results!! Could make for some quieter mouths and a laugh as well!!! Iccould scout a level area and supply a sheet of form ply!!

I think I’m coming all the way out to SC but need to be closer before I commit.

I dont think we access to the scales anymore G, but I hope to get it weighed this week or next. As far as the report goes, I do like Honda because they are the best  but it doesnt stop be being impressed, disapointed or surprised in other brands like the 530

I will see what I can do regarding the scales; but I won’t promise anything at this stage.

Just let me know what you would like to do TB.

    Cheers,
