AJ helped in the pits as transponder changer, goggle cleaner/ tear-off applyer, food bringer and drinks lad. He also had the cool job of putting ice down my jersey from the 9 hour mark to cool me down. Worked a treat.

    Galey,

I didn’t realise it was you at the time but you blokes were on our hammer all day. There was nothing between 6th and 10th (give or take a few places) in pairs. We were in 10th at some stage (around lunch I think) during the day. They had score sheets up during the day. Somehow we worked our way back up a bit but the way I felt I’m not sure how.

The team who came 6th was a 19ish year old girl and her dad from Cairns. She represented aussies at the last 6 day and is doing the AORC series. Rides a postie for work as well.

Did you blokes do two laps at a time or what strategy did you use. We went two at a time all day, same as last year. The girl and her dad went to single laps in the arvo and this is when they caught us so maybe that would be a good strategy. Just wondering what others (pairs) did.

    STM,

Loved those pebbles and I loved those hills. They were the best places by far to get round people.

Passed a bike in one of the bog holes. Up to the seat in mud and no rear wheel at all. No tyre, no rim nothing. Not sure what happened but it didn’t look good.

Anyone looked at their air filter yet. I haven’t been game to pop the lid.

    Bundy,

We started with 2 laps at a time then after a while? we ran 1 lap each. I did 3 at one stage as I pitted to see Mick with his helmet off and fuelling up his bike and munching on something! I rode through for another lap.
We found we were too smashed to do the 2 without making mistakes and going slower. Mick gave in first! Carried less fuel on one lap, no camelbac, even though it was hard to get a chance to have a quick drink. My bite valve failed on my first lap dumping gatorade and water on my crotch and into my boots!
You would need to compare the lap times, but traffic and line choice played a big part, to see the 2 lap one lap distance.
I figuured we just ride consistently all day and we end up were we end up. I knew there had to be Pros ahead of us and I was right , starting with the lads in 7th!
The first 6 hours was a race, carving it up, roosting everywhere having fun, then after that is was DIE BEFORE DNF!

Hands cramped up bad as well as my quads started seizing up. I had some Endura gel which helped I think as well as some magnesium tabs that Tait had. They may have been too late to be effective. S neck as well, maybe from looking at my front wheel to much.

I took a filter skin off my filter when I felt it running on, then changed the filter 2 laps later. Just about to replace it for a ride this weekend!

Glad they took outthe boggy section and addded the hills as they were fun and good to pass riders. Funny getting to the top and seeing red faced riders looking at you in awe/ disbelief/ respect. GO THE 300’s.

I got to met Spud for the first time and as I told him , he is not as short as I thought he would be. Top bloke and all.

Pretty sure the pros started at 6th Galey. Definitely no pros in the team that cam 7th anyway.

Not sure what it says about me but it did make me feel better to see people suffering on the hill. Made it somehow feel like you were not alone in your own suffering. Also felt like you were passing somebody too which always lifts the spirits.

I hated that off camber rough shit just after the hill though. Grew to hate it more with every lap.

I had a great time at the event, we had a few bike troubles through the day and ended with a DNF. I had a couple of low speed spills, it was good to see when i did other competitors would stop and ask if i was ok. Going into this with almost zero bike time in the last 6 months and not alot of excercise did not help, was good to watch the fast riders out on the course and not get run over when they went past me . Met an OLD BULL when lc set up camp beside us, only lasted a few beers sundy night and was only woken by a bike revving beside me…. will go back next year if i can get an entry in early enough and hopefully get a few pony’s and a decent amount of trailriding in this year.
