The old Ring Caught in exhaust port trick.

Kinked ring = Broken motor, TB is right about ring expanders… the best way to go by far.

But I’m gunna disagree with TB on the options, as you don’t have to get all of that done by Eric, just get the squish band sorted, replate the barrel, get the ports syncroed and a top end kit, as unless kawasaki made the only 2Tchamber that is optimum for normal use that alone will make a huge difference to the rideability of the bike, but that’s just how I’m made, like things to run as well as they can as long as the economics make sense.

Plus I have to disagree with TB, it’s my job He’s a Plant Mechanics Instructor, that’s what they were put on this earth to do with…. ;)

Well it appears that it was caused by my dodgy ring fitting technique, dang don’t I feel silly now. :( Oh well we live and learn. ;) But there goes the suspension over haul for my XR for a while longer…….again :S

    Well my options are…….

1 Bore it out and resleeve with cast iron sleeve, supplied with Wisco piston and a rebuild kit (2 week turn around)$608.90

2 Get the Nikosil redone, supplied with Wisco piston and rebuild kit (2 week turn around) $592.40

    3 Send the barrel and head to America to be serviced by Eric Gore and recieve the following;

    •Cleaning and disassembly
    •Inspection and measurement
    •Over-boring to 100cc
    •Porting
    •Replating
    •Diamond honing
    •Head mods
    •Powervalve service
    •Piston and gasket kits.
You’ll get your choice of powerbands; more low/mid, more mid/top, broader powerband, and choices of fuel; pump or race gas.

Price AU$410.25 plus around AU$100 freight plus insurance.

At least 1 month turn around.

4 I am awaiting a quote from Japan for a brand new barrel and OEM piston kit.
I am guessing it to be around $550

    Decisions decisions :S :S :S

    Go 3 , but dont tell the scrutineer :P :P :P

Tough luck Mate, I will come over with Bull this arvo, although I am going blind so you will have to describe what it looks like to me

Maybe next time I fit some rings I will do them between beers 5 and 6 not 8 and 9. :P

Actually Mick you can make a reasonable ring compressor from beercans……that is for real tech advice too

Don’t stress it we all do silly things at times, and it shows a healthy ego to admit it in company.

Seriously if you intend on keeping the bike in the family, #1- is out heat transfer, clearances and ultimately longevity and power are compromised by relining with cast.

#2 is Ho-hum not value for money get ripped by the usual aussie “we’ve got the only/best service in the southern hemisphere thing, who else ya gunna go to?” deal

#3 get one of the worlds premier 2T men either build or to oversee Richard (his protege’) you a beautiful clean topend setup, guaranteed to do as you ask of him, for less money.. no-brainer to me, go the Gorr.

But it’s your money your bikes and your kids.

Having the luxury of a loaner bike for at least a month, is starting to lead me towards sending the bits to the States as the head has a nick in it from the broken ring as well. Gasit has nothing but praise for the service he received from Eric too, so I will mull it over and make a decision tonight on which way I will go. I doesn’t help that I tried ringing the Coating mob in Victoria 4 times today and they didn’t answer the phone. Is it a Public holiday In Vic Today?

Yep, as his sisters KX65 didn’t blow up and it was using the same fuel, but now you have got me worried and I will drain what is left in the 65.

Haha that’s cruel! I’ve had it in the back of my mind about doing this but I’ve mixed the oil immediately as I’ve filled the jerry and only fill from that. I think I need to work out a system though….

Not oil Mick, a few reasons, not enough scuffing, and the bigend would started on you, and the little end would/should be rattling it’s pin out.

AB, a Tag on the handle of the jerrycan is a good one, or be like me, oil goes in before any fuel, that way anything in the 20 litre 2T jerrycan must be pre-mix fer sure.
