Hey Guys,
I had a boil over on the we doing tight ST and lots of stopsstarts. I mean ride 20m stop for 30sec, ride 10m, idle for 1 min, ride 40m, stop for 2 mins … repeated over and over.
No brainer the bike would get real hot with no decent air flow over the radiator. Ive seen discusions on the use of Engine ICE.
Anyone here use it ? Where do you get it ?
Am also looking into a radiator fan ( from OS, Im not paying $350aus for a glorified 12cm computer fan  ).
Cheers
September 29, 2010 at 2:26 am #188016Some people actually use computer fans I have heard, they should be cheap enough. I have been thinking fitting one to my Husaberg as it overheats very quickly in the tight stuff. I always turn it off whenever there is a holdup.
September 29, 2010 at 2:34 am #188031I am also having some boil over issues with my XR650 in tight singles. I rang Anderson’s radiators in Port Macquarie this morning and in the discussion he mentioned that his sons KTM250 is having some heat problems. KTM make some after market radiator caps 1.4 bar and 1.8 bar.(Standard is 1.1 bar) He said that the higher pressure cap does help. He is also trying some sort of additive to his radiator that is some sort of metal wetting agent that improved the cooling efficiency of the coolant.
AS for the Engine Ice, he said he had never used it but had heard of it. So I can’t help there.
September 29, 2010 at 2:54 am #188017Cheers Mick,
Ive read on other forums that some ppl have used it with good results.
My 450 has the 1.8 bar cap.I was knocked back by a KTM parts site in the US to buy the fan kit ( $350aus here, or $150aus from the US ) They said buy it from your local dealer. But I found a Husaberg dealer in the US and have placed the order with them as I believe the fan kit is identical with the FE450.
September 29, 2010 at 3:04 am #188032The radiator coolant “Ice” will help but wont stop it, a higher pressure cap will help but wont stop it (and remember the higher pressure will put a lot more pressure on hoses and clamps)The metal wetting agent that Mick mentioned will improve the cooling efficiency of the cooling system but also wont fix it (We trialed it here at work in stationary gensets and there wasnt enough benefit for the cost)
A thermo fan would in all but the most extreme cases prevent it boiling and be the best fix IMO. Check the cost from Mal at Sutto’s, tell him you are a Old Bull.TB
September 29, 2010 at 3:37 am #188018While your talking to Mal at sutto’s ask him about the coolant in the metal can he sells, I have been using it and have had no real issues, it’s boiling point is up over 200 deg, mal was the one who put me onto it. You don’t add water just this stuff and 1 tin is perfect amount for my 06 450exc

Oh Ok, I don’t look, just take Mal on his word and give him the coin.
In That case, Riggs, I have used ICE and have not had any issues of late – but summer is coming and that will change things.

Ring Sutto’s and ask Mal
Its not cheap and if you did as I told you 12 months ago with your bike you wouldnt have boiled it once  and especially if you dont leave it idling for extended periods when its hot
