Quote:Some people just sit on the lounge eatin’ crap, whinging and complaining about their lives. Some say conservative stuff like “Don’t bite off more than you can chew” AND THEN there are some who bite off a whole freakin’ mouthful, grab another two hands full and then chew like hell!!!We was chewin’ like hell all weekend!
What an experience! A terrific ride, the only thing missing was swamp and snow! TB will try and fix that for next time…….because I’m sure there’ll be a next time.
It’s all been said, but to travel from next to the F3 on the NSW central coast at Dora Creek to Sunny corner near Bathurst, then back to Lithgow in a day with only approx. 40 k’s of blacktop in it, in a word…MAMMOTH.
We had fire trails, rocks, hard solid ruts, twin trail, soft sand ruts, single trail, rocks, sharp puddles (ask TB), tar, sand, rocks, creeks, mud, snotty downhills, shitty uphills, rocks, 1st gear crawling, top gear (1*#km/ph) stuff…..something for everyone.
Towards the end of day one, whilst the boys were repairing their flat tyres on our way to Dark corner, TB and I had a chance to pause and reflect on what we had all achieved so far that day……we looked at each other…….and then those poignant words of Dirty Harry boomed through both our Bluetooth headsets “Mans’ gotta know his limitations” It was at that point we thought that if we were to push on as planned (Sofala, Hillend then Bathurst) we would be arriving well after dark as totally spent units. That would have made day 2 far too much. So, deciding “discretion being the better part of valour” TB suggested we muck around at Sunny corner for a bit and then find our way back to Lithgow for the night.
This decision ‘made’ the trip. It meant that the 2nd day was not as draining. With fewer kilometers to cover, we would then have time up our sleeve to explore different options for future rides and to allow for the inevitable fatigue.Day 2 was just as good, we found a great trail (wider than single narrower than twin) that ran for about 30k’s – brilliant.
After our 2nd last stop at the Halfway House, TB soon entered ‘the zone’ through Yengo on the way to ‘Laguna Wine Bar’. You know when the Road runner turns around to the Coyote, jumps in the air, says meep meep…….then swoosh, pow off he goes into the distance…that was TB. He deserved his quiet time to cut loose without any anchors.
I know it sounds like a THANK FEST, but it’s good manners and the right thing to do (sorry if you’ve already read the same thing 20 times)Bad luck.
Thanks Kylie and Salina – the ride wouldn’t have been as enjoyable without you two always being there. Always smiling, upbeat and ready to change plans when necessary. Nothin was a problem. Gold medal backup crew. Top shelf.
Thanks TB, organizer and shit stirrer extraordinaire – you da man.
Boulder, the man is building a legend without even trying. Thanks mate.
Jeffro (IT..cousin that is) Solid performer, plodder, courteous, helpful, just a top Bull to have in your crew. Thanks mate.
DanD….had more sh$% put on him than a Port-a-loo pump out truck…..and just kept smiling, joking and coming back for more. A great bloke. Obviously enjoying his new bike, although I think he doesn’t appear to have a lot of confidence in his front wheel…..because he always seems to have it off the ground..so there’s no weight on it…what’s going there Dan?
Thanks to Mal5.1 and Donna for making the effort to come and see us on Saturday night. Quality people.
That’s it! 430ish k’s one day, 350ish the next – with almost every type of terrain on this continent. No whingers, No heroes, Great company, Really testing yourself without going too far, 3 punctures, 1 pair lost sunnies/ hair band, Nature at its most beautiful, Hot shower heaven, Excellent meal and rumbos, Top nights rest, new tracks found. Bring on Nundle.
Thanks everyoneCrash
Man I love the fiddy
Next time when filming TB, I’ll try tieing a rope to his fiddy, it’ll be the only way I could stay with him.Great report Crash, on the money as usual

AnonymousOnly shitten ya – plus it’s my 700th post.
So here we go-
DAY 2
Now that my senses have returned from their super overload on the weekend and my heart rate has returned to normal. I will continue with my recollection of the Old Bulls Biggest Weekend – Day 2
After day 1 I didn’t know if I could muster the strength to throw my leg over the WR for another day of fast paced fun. However the adrenalin must of still been pumping around the veins. I can’t say that I had a great nights sleep on Saturday night with a bloody bike alarm going off all night and Kylie making me get up just to make sure everything was alright, but my alarm on the phone eventually went off at 6:30am letting me know that it was time to get back in the saddle for the home run. (Thanks TB for not such an early start on Sunday). I got myself out of bed, had a shower, put my jeans and jumper on and went outside for a smoke. The air was crisp without being absolutely freezing. After finishing my morning constitutional it was back inside to gear up for the day.
I got my riding gear on and found that it was surprisingly dry after Saturday. Must have been the AC being set on 30 all night. After gearing up I went back outside to see that some of the other Old Bulls were up and about. I held Jeffro’s bike up while he lubed his chain, I scabbed a bit of chain lube off Jeffro and done mine. I milled around for a while getting stuff from the room and into the car while jamming a few more durries in. Topped the bike up from the jerry can and I was pretty much ready to go. By this time everyone else was prepped and ready to go. We rolled out at around 8:00am and headed up the street for everyone else to fuel.
We headed up the Bells Line Road to get back into the bush. Riding up the Bells Road I took it fairly easy for one I didn’t have a lot of faith in my tyres and I was struggling to hold on with my cold callused hands. We dropped into the bush off the left of the Bells Road for a little blat, this is where my hands were really giving me some grief. We had a few little turn arounds before finding our way back onto the Bells Road and back into the bush. The electricity commission should really lift their game with the crappy bit of clearing they do under the powerlines in that area, not even a decent track under them. We had a few in’s, out’s and round’s of the bush along the Bells Road but we then started heading in the right direction. We dropped in near the Zig Zag railway and stopped at Moto’s tree and rock. We done a bit of dirt road riding going through one place near the railway that had all the makings of Deliverance 2. We stopped at a lookout and had a quick look over the edge, TB told me that this was a special stop for me as Kylie had just upped my life insurance and needed to be rid of me. With this in mind I kept my distance from the edge and TB.
We made our way from the lookout and onto Mount (somewhere). Poor Boulder copped another flat so we stopped for a little break while the tube was changed.
On the go again we met up with the girls at Bilpin for a very welcome egg and bacon roll and a drink, I topped the WR up again and we kept going.A little bit of blacktop and we were cooking again. Our brekky must of really hit the spot as the wick was turned up and it was game on. The return trip along the Old Bells Line Road was quick on the down for me but a lot slower on the up (again my fear of heights, slowed me down somewhat on the up trip – some of those drop off are pretty huge). The drop offs didn’t seem to daunt TB or Crash as they took off like cats shot in the arse. I eventually got to the top and we met up with Kylie and Salina again. Another splash and dash and we were going again.
Back onto the dirt for a super fast sprint. A few times I thought this is madness, one wrong placed rock and it’s serious dirt nap time. But like all of you would know that is a minor thing when the mercury switch in your head has been switched to “you must win whatever the cost” however I did not win. Never mind, we were not racing cause that would be tom foolery and horse play and we are all responsible adults that wouldn’t partake in such school boy shenanigans. We returned onto a dirt road and I was still in race mode, this was shortly ended with TB yelling at me not to be a wanker and stop trying to overtake up the inside on blind corners. Lucky for me TB did chastise me for my silliness as a convoy of RFS trucks were making their way up the hill.
Our next fuel stop was Colo Heights where I fuelled at the servo only to be told that the car was meeting us. Shit happens I suppose. From here it was a short trip on the blacktop. I used this blacktop time to regain myself again before w hit the A track. We got back onto the A track and TB and Crash had a bit of a sprint. At the next intersection I got a chance to have a go with the big fella. The pace was warp speed across everything that the A track had to offer. TB can certainly get the fiddy cooking. I gave it my all, the speed that we were doing was insane. I must have had the 450 right in it’s happy zone as it was purring like a kitten (a very excited kitten that is) the deep sand I just was floating across the top, the rocks they just didn’t matter. We stopped at the next intersection and was left behind on the corner to direct Jeffro and Boulder in the right direction. TB and Crash were gone. The A track was a bit dustier on Sunday compared to Saturday but still very fun. We returned to the blacktop for a bit of a run up to the Halfway House for a drink and a top up again. With everyone still a bit full from breakfast it was only a quick drink and snack. The call was made that a beer / rum was in order so our next stop would be the Laguna wine bar.
The trip from the Halfway House to Laguna was every bit as fast if not faster than the earlier sprints in the morning. We stopped at one gate and was waved through by TB and Crash. I led the way and was told to stop at the next intersection. I stopped at the intersection and was joined by Jeffro and Boulder. We were stopped there long enough to turn our bikes off and wait for TB and Crash to join us. We then heard the sound of a 650 at full tilt, TB came around the corner that we were sitting at warp speed, he had the arse end of the bike hanging all the way sideways, spraying us with enough dirt and dust to near bury us. Crash came up the hill at around the same speed but stopped to remove half a gum tree that had jammed itself between his front sprocket and frame. Once the offending limb was removed it was time to move on. Crash was gone again trying to catch up with the psychopath that had just tried to bury us alive. Jeffro and I took turns at dogging each other the rest of the way. We eventually caught up with Crash at the next intersection, but where the hell was TB? Crash took off to look for our lost riding companion. With the rest of us in tow. We eventually found TB and Crash at the next intersection. TB had entered the zone and there was no stopping him. We were now back in an area that houses were starting to come more apparent so the race mode was turned off. A gentle cruise down the road had us pulling up at Laguna for that welcomed beer / rum. Our support crew joined us shortly after we had taken the tops off our drinks.
Jeffro and me gave our bikes a bit of a drink and it was time to go again. We were nearly at the finish line now of our epic adventure. The last words that came out of TB was, we will just poke along now back to Chickens as we have came this far without any mishaps.Did this happen?
Well for the first 5 minutes it did,
Then it was on again – A bit of a tussle along the dirt road and then up the hill from the Laguna Valley.
TB and Crash were in the zone again – I had a bit of a go at the bottom but I few wrong lines and I was out of the race.
We all regrouped at the top intersection and where off again. The dust on the Watagans Road was atrocious, so a decent gap had to be made so as you could see where you where going. We made our way down from the Watagans and back to Chickens place. Eventually Kylie and Salina arrived and the trailer was unhooked and everyone was able to get their car keys and bags.
We had finished the Old Bulls Biggest Weekend with no injuries or breakdowns. Which I think is a colossal effort considering the amount of ground, pace and the varying country that we had crossed.
It was time for Kylie and me to leave, so after saying goodbye to everyone it was back on the bike for me to do the final 30km to home. I made it home with a whopping 819km racked up for the weekend.
The final 3km on the way home was done standing up as my arse could not handle another second on the WR’s seat.
The bike only got moved this arvo from where I parked it on Sunday night, however it is still filthy from the weekend. I will get to washing and servicing hopefully this week in preparation of the Nundle trip.
I have already thanked everyone on the Old Bulls Biggest Weekend, but thankyou again and also thankyou for the support car petrol money that you all put in, wasn’t expected but was appreciated.
Dan
**I may have put some of my report in the wrong order of events and places but it was such a huge ride that some things have blurred into the next and have gotten mixed up with the recollection, but you get my drift that it was one hell of a ride**
