Got my hands on an 87 XR600R. It is my first bike and I’m enjoying this new found love quite a bit. I am by no means a brilliant rider at all and am learning as I go.
Any way back to the bike, I’m not sure what mods, if any, this pig has. I was told by the last owner that the owner prior to him had rebuil the top/bottom ends and the box about 2k ago. He was unsure if it was over sized or not. I know it has a smaller rear sproket than standard and a massive black muffler on it that you could but a can of beans in the opening, extractors apear factory. Apperantly the guy had built it for highway use and high speed.
It also has a uni filter and has a single carb on it which I have been told is not stock as the 87 had twins but it is a stock carb that came standard on the 88, not sure if the 87 was ever fitted with them standard on the 87 as an option or if honda ran out of twins from factory and started using new stock (guessing that info, no basis on it at all).
I would like to try to get this thing to take off quicker as high speeds aren’t really my thing any way, don’t get me wrong I don’t mind them in a car at all but on a bike I’m not as keen. I still want it to be able to do 100 with out reving her head off but doesn’t need to be hitting 160-180, I just won’t get there so it is pointless.
Any cheap mods I can do to make her go quicker? I say cheap because I have a wife and 4 young lads at home to support so trying to spend money on my toys is pretty difficult most times, I know you are all probably saying “join the club, cash is tight” but man is it real tight when you have 4 boys from 10 down who eat nearly the same as me.
Back to the bike again, I have been told first thing should be the sprokets, will change it from high way to wheely monster straight away. Also the carby, a flat slide mikuni. Any cheap mods that won’t break my little bank would be greatly appreciated. Also point me in the dirrection to any good second hand parts, beggers can’t be choosers and I’m sure my old pig won’t mind an old part on her either, most old parts can look good with a little time, cleaning and painting if needed.
Thanks in advance
February 5, 2010 at 11:23 pm #170401Oh I almost forgot, over the last couple weeks I did give her a carby clean, inside, outside and jets, cleaned and re-oilded the uni filter, new plug, flushed and cleaned all my tank and fuel filter, lubed all her cables and replaced the push cable, installed a set of indicators and new grips. Oh and replaced all grease nipples as they were all blocked and greased her and give the chain a good lubing also, cleaned her breaks and basically give all the plastics a cut and polish to remove all the whiting that was on the red, was ugly and it had to go.
February 6, 2010 at 9:09 pm #170402Let me know what parts you’d be needing and I will have a rat around in the shed and see what I have.
February 8, 2010 at 1:24 am #170462That’s the hard part Mike, not sure what parts I need or should get. Sprokets should be purchased as a set with chains and kept together I have been told
thanks Mike. Maybe an exhaust, but if it is any good I doubt you would have one laying around it would still be on your bike. replacement carb with larger jets, once again probably would still be on your bike not just laying around. Not sure what else you can use to make a bike go quicker without pulling the motor down.
February 8, 2010 at 1:38 am #170517I have a couple of carbies kicking around. 3 from memory. two good stockers and another that is used for parts and Moose claimed our spare exhaust last week. There is another spare pipe in the shed that my brother owns but he has visions of rebuilding the other XR that is up the side of my house in the weather.
February 10, 2010 at 4:56 am #170518What would the chances be of getting one of your stockers off you as a spare to play with? If so how much would you want.
Also could I bend up a set of headers for her on my mates pipe bender? If it could be done easy enough does any one know what size tube would be good to make a set of free flowing headers?February 10, 2010 at 5:04 am #170813I will PM you a price for the carby.
February 10, 2010 at 5:37 am #170816I’m no XRpert but aren’t the Mikuni flatslide TMXs the go on big red pigs?
I know the stock carb was a bitch for flooding and why bigger jets syco, is it running lean, cause if it has been setup for high speed the jetting should be fairly rich to begin with.BC
February 13, 2010 at 12:07 pm #170821I think I will go that way Mr Blue. Mike had also suggested the Mikuni flatslide so I think I will invest in one.
