Ok so it’s not that big of an adventure but when you live in the Hastings valley why the hell would you want to ride thousands of km to ride in terrain that’s not as good!
Managed to snare a sneaky day off on Thursday to go with a few boys who where setting up a day route for the upcoming BMW gs safari.
There was a mix of bikes, dr650, r1200gs, r1200gs adv (my ride for the day) and lead rider Kev on his BMW hp2 enduro a sick bit of gear.
I was lead on about 400 km of varied trails some where wide open but mostly fire trails. We followed the following route:-
Port – beechwood – pipeclay – toms creek – elands – gingers creek – lunch – scratch down gingers on tar ( went way too fast in the knobbies lol) – birdwood – Hastings forest way – bellangry – back to port.
The big BMW always amazes me in the dirt, takes a different riding technique to go fast in the dirt but they are bloody amazing considering you can then come out on the tar and keep with most sport road riders.
After not been on a dirt bike since boxing day (broke my collar bone) I was a little rusty and woke up feeling like mike Tyson had snuck into my room and had his way with me! I was fooked!
All in all I had a blast and can’t wait for September to get out there with the safari riders and have another go.

Nice one Rory , what are you riding on the safari ??

I was lucky enough to have a loan of steve( adventure Moto) s F800 for the Trailzone high country ride earlier this year and I must say I was impressed at how capable off road the bike was , although a bit too much power to traction , I got to grips with it and stayed upright !!! B)

I’m probaly going to ride the same 07 1200 gs adv, I’d wreck our new demo lol although the new twin cam ESA bikes are so much better in the bush!
The 800’s are good but I much prefer the big boxers, even in the bush. Traction is better cause that boxer fires so evenly, you just have to totally adapt your riding style to them and they are awesome! Besides men ride 1200’s in the bush lol
Are any ob guys going on the safari? I’m probably only able to do 2 days around port n down to Forster.

Pretty sure Flying Fish (Amy) will be there, also Jason Barrett and our own SteveRed (ADV Moto Steve) will more than likely be starters

That’s good to hear, if you know them, tell them to drop in and say hi or I will see them on it.
