OK… based on what I’ve been told it seems that my trailbike helmet and goggles are probably not the best thing to use on my trip across Australia. So I would be interested in hearing your views regarding the ideal helmet, what brand/model I should consider looking at.
I have done some reading on Zeus 2100B and Arai
but seen mixed reviews.
Thanks in advance,
Kat
August 12, 2010 at 1:39 am #185707I have a Zeus Kat and wont be wearing it when I go to the corner. I dont like the way the dust gets into to my eyes from up underneath, where goggles seal against your face. Personal thing maybe but thats my take on it.

August 12, 2010 at 2:24 am #185708TB and I were talking about this last night, As I have the Zeus too.
They are a BIG ugly heavy helmet imo compared to most motocross helmets. And the sizing is all over the place.
But that aside I’v been pretty happy with mine for what it is I have done around 7000km of dirt adv riding with it, My mate who i ride with has the arai and he seems to have alot more issues with dust up under his visor than what I do. I wear a balaclava and scarf so there isn’t much room left for dust to get in.
I have the iridium visor on mine and it has held up well with very few scratches. The tinted visor on the arai appeared to scratch very easily (I am the visor cleaner). Its very hard to get goggles that fit in the zeus although I do have a pair of Oakley O frames that fit nicely. For those times you want to wear goggles instead of having the visor down.
Wind noise in the Zeus is not as good as a road bike helmet but imo is not to bad and when i have worn my mates arai found the arai to be worse. Wearing the arai i need to wear ear plugs and so does my mate in the zeus I have never worn ear plugs.
There is plenty of room in the ear sockets for speakers.
Overall I’m pretty happy with it value for money i think is pretty good. I am a big fan of Arai’s and wear an Arai motocross helmet but don’t think I’d fork the dollars out for a ADV arai. I don’t know much about the shoei the people who have them seem pretty happy. And I think Rjay’s recently released an ADV helmet too priced around the Zeus.

Or one of my 7 other helmets, maybe I should get a corner helmet (I name them for the occasion I purchase them   )
I will try a few different things you have suggested with the Zeus Bowie because it does have a few very good features

August 12, 2010 at 3:31 am #185725Kat you know I’ve got the Zeuss and Rigs has one too. I haven’t had any other ADV helmet so can’t really compare but I’ve been pretty happy with it and think they’re good value for money.
As with anything that is dual purpose – it’s a compromise in some way. Perhaps noiser than a road helmet, and heavier than an MX helmet, but personally I think that’s what would suit the ride you’ve got coming up best.
Happy for you to give mine a test when we get together next
August 12, 2010 at 3:50 am #185709Hi Kat. I have the Zeus and I don’t have anything bad to say about it…
There is another Brand called R-Jays that makes a dakar style helmet.. It is shaped more to the motocross style helmet that the roundness of the Zeus and the face Visor forms to the shape.. Playing around in the store(MCA Auburn) they look like they will take a google easier than the Zeus.. They are only $199 so I think I may try one myself to compare to the Zeus..
Cheers…
August 12, 2010 at 8:14 am #185710Hi Kat, I’ve got a Zeuss and am very happy with it.
It’s light, comfortable and waterproof.
Theres no pull on the peak even at 120kms+
I use a clear visor and sunglasses when needed.
I’ve been thinking about sunglasses with foam around the lens for the dusty days (seen them in Cycletorque)August 12, 2010 at 9:17 am #185711Hello Kat, I got an Arai and its a nice light helmet, the visor ratchet is poor and the visor comes down when I want it to stay up.I can wear goggles with my visor up or down, as the arai I have has a recess to allow the strap to sit under the closed visor. I would buy a Shoei in preference[next]. Both these helmets are expensive.
I hope this helps.
ScottAugust 12, 2010 at 9:45 am #185774Hi Katgirl
I bought an R-jays Dakar last weekend for Cameron corner trip and price wise it’s spot on , I will only be doing a few trips like this each year and I think it will be good enough for that.
The fit is a lot different to my motocross and road lids but I think noise reduction will be appreciated when sitting at speed. It is still all washable and it’s nice and light compaired to the shoei.Nick
August 12, 2010 at 10:23 am #185729Hi Kat.
I have the R-Jays as well, it is reasonably light and comfortable and I haven’t noticed much dust when wearing it. The only negative I would say is the wind noise which is because there is no padding around the ear area, I usually ride with earplugs anyway but after cutting some foam rubber to fit in the space near the ears I have found the wind noise is dramatically reduced and I can ride comfortably without earplugs.
All helmets have to comply to the same standard so I would say the biggest consideration should be comfort, followed by price. There is no point paying big dollars for something that isn’t comfortable.Cheers
JeffroAugust 13, 2010 at 12:06 am #185712Thanks everyone for your input. It has really helped me refine my approach to buying an Adv helmet.
CathiM wouldn’t mind trying your helmet out on Saturday when we hook up for a ride.

I use them instead of goggles and think they’re great – don’t have any issues with dust.
Only thing I don’t like about them is if you use the lighter colour outer lenses (yellow and clear for me but from memory there were other choices) with the inner prescription lens you really do look like an ugly fish!!
August 13, 2010 at 9:25 am #185726i used an m2r helmet with ear plugs and scott no sweat goggles at yellow mountain worked fine at what ever speed a ktm530 will do for me .
