Hi All
we’re STILL planning and prepping – now it’s the helmet phase …
If you were going to wear a helmet for 6 weeks 8 hours a day what would you wear?
We’re traveling on dirt and tar – we’re not planning on night riding
Central QLD – WA – back to Alice and across the Simpson.
Thanks heaps
May 11, 2012 at 11:23 am #221522Shoei Hornet… I love mine and wouldn’t wear anything else after having a Zeus, RJays and Icon Variant.
Shoei is quietest, most comfortable around your ears, especially when running headphones or internal speakers and the sunnies groove it worth the purchase alone.
The vision is amazing, I only noticed how wide the port is when I wore my old icon the other day…
It does not get near as stinky as my icon and the visor can be opened when riding and you can wear (some) goggles with the visor up or down.
Good vents and you know it’s safe. I light for what it is too.
Cheers.
May 11, 2012 at 11:34 am #221535I wear the Arai XD3 and it’s a great lid as is the Shoei Hornet , I was always told with road helmets you either have an Arai head or a Shoei head , so give them both a try. They are both top end with great comfort for all day riding.
I wore my Arai for 13 hours one day , as did TB with Shoei , and it felt good right to the end.The Rjays is a terrible lid , noisy , leaks , rattles. I’ve got one and never wear it.
Good luck and let us know what you get

May 11, 2012 at 12:02 pm #221536Shoei or nothing for me. An Arai would be my second choice although they don’t seem as have much room between your nose, mouth, chin to the front of the helmet as a and I like that extra space if there is an impact
All the benefits that Shelby mentioned alone make it worth purchasing IMOAvoid Zeus, RJays etc if your wearing them all day you want quality

May 11, 2012 at 5:26 pm #221523I have an Icon Variant, love it but they tell me some people hate the fit. It’s quality and fits me well. I would have bought an AGV but I got a great price on the Icon. Buy what fits you best as it is your head. What is someone’s best helmet may fit you like a paper bag.
Here’s a link to a whole heap of helmet reviews that may help:

I had an RJ before and now it collecting dust in the garage……
ITS WORTH EVERY CENT…..
I did a bike ride the other day (10hrs on bike)….. the helmet was sensational. Light, not noisy, doesn’t whip around when going fast… plus it looks fast!!

May 17, 2012 at 5:51 pm #221527I havent been riding long, and i majority ride dirt
My first helmet was a arai vx pro and i loved it
Then i recently needed a new one but when i went and
tried a new one on, it didnt feel right (i guess my head shape changed??)
So i tried on the shoei vfx-w and wow awesome!!
Love it, i have ridden with it a few times now and its sooo
comfortable
All i can say is try on a few helmets and wander around
with it on for awhile, you will know pretty much straight away!
You do only get one head, and its a pretty big purchase so make
sure your happy with it!!
And its gotta look good too!!!May 18, 2012 at 12:28 pm #221528I went for the FLY TREKKER.
Good price to suit my budget and nice fit for my ugly mug
Has some good features with plenty of vents (16 of them in all) to keep the head cool in summer, also the ability to wear goggles and still flip the visor down if needed is a bonus I think,,,
I see the advantages of the top of the line lids like the Shoei & Arai`s but the that means I would be forking out big $$$ each year to replace them :laugh:I must hit the deck a lot or something ,,, actually have had the last lid for 4 years now but she is getting uncomfortable and time to be shelved except for the shorter days and the commute to work
Also, the open dirt helmet will not cut it on the cool trip to Sunny Corner :SAs always, buy what suits your head the best and the best quality that you can afford
May 18, 2012 at 7:38 pm #221529Thanks for everyones comments –
And the winner is ……… Shoei Hornet
I too had an RJ’s Dakar ….. had it for 3 months …. took it back to the place of purchase and contacted RJ’s who were only to happy for me to return it. In this case, in my experience, you get what you pay for. Thankyou RJ”s for listening to an unhappy customer.
Cheers Brenda
May 18, 2012 at 9:31 pm #221530Make sure you do shop around
When i was looking, i checked out a few places on line
(i hate buying online, i like to touch and feel and to buy local)
And went to a big bike shop in sydney, but when i decided on the
helmet i liked i went to my local guy and he ordered a couple of
sizes to double check my size, then to my amazement he was $150 cheaper
than anyone else !!
Gotta love great service and an awesome price!!
Plus did i mention that i am stoked with my helmet!!!May 18, 2012 at 10:30 pm #222034DakarChick wrote:Thanks for everyones comments –And the winner is ……… Shoei Hornet

Congratulations on your purchase Brenda I have a Shoei hornet and having owned or worn 4 different adventure helmets in the last 3 years can say that the Shoei is the ducks guts
I have to say that the service shown by Rjays or the distributor was pretty good, credit where credit is due
Enjoy

May 22, 2012 at 11:30 pm #221531I’ve got a RJays flip up style which I find pretty good.
however the lack of a visor is a pain so I’m saving for a AGV AX-8. Though about the cheapies but quality is worth saving for. -
