June 25, 2013 at 10:37 am #237784Ok i am keen to try a bit of this type of riding so i currently have two options when it comes to bikes both are currenlty stock … the question is which one would be best for me for this type of riding?
1. DR650 – this is not as comfy on the tar but i am thinking the weight is better for the not so smooth stuff. Currenlty cant go more than 10 minutes up the road before you need fuel so first thing would be larger fuel tank! :S
2. BMW 650 – OMG i love the heated hand grips  and much more user friendly on the butt …can be a bit heavy thoughI guess the question is how rough do the trails get that you go on?
June 25, 2013 at 10:43 am #237785Mr Squiggles vids in the latestNav ride report from last weekend are a good indication Rach ,,
That`s about standard I reckonJune 25, 2013 at 10:45 am #244616I reckon you would go ok on either Rach but I don’t know that you could pick up BMW on your own, especially if carrying some gear.
I personally am looking to get a lighter bike than my old Tenere when I next update. Watching D-Rally take off on his KTM690 over the erosion mounds while I had to ease off to avoid getting too much air made me jealous on the previos nav ride.
June 25, 2013 at 10:54 am #237786……. Please don’t let it be the first weekend in August, please , please please :S
June 25, 2013 at 10:56 am #237787Thanks Eagle, just watched the vid.
Jeffro i can pick up the BMW (i tested this when i was doing alot of dirt by myself) but probs not with gear and certainly not with any gradient added. Hope all is going well for you on your big adventure
.
After reading a few of the reports from the last ride i am thinking the DR650 is probably the better option for me mainly because of the weight, didnt realise i had to factor in falling off so much with this type of riding  .
Well I have sure seen enough threads about making a DR650 adventure ready so i guess i better get onto it if i am aiming for August

WR250R Rach. That thing of Amy’s you couldn’t kill with a BIG stick. It’s done 40k, never needed a valve adjustment, doesn’t wear out chains, sprockets and tyres. Can be flogged all day, is light and nimble. Sure gives away a bit on the fast stuff but I often look down see I am doing 120 and Amy is still there. Check some of the videos on rumsoakedstudios she is quick on it.
Food for thought
DR otherwise and any bike can be fitted with heated grips

June 25, 2013 at 11:01 am #244622Hey Rach,
A lot of people ride the DR650’s on these type of rides and they’re a very reliable option indeed. I think TB did a thread on the build of Dejay’s DR650 when he had one. At least you don’t have to worry about radiators and fans when it goes pear shaped :blink:Cheers,
LeftyJune 25, 2013 at 11:10 am #237788I saw Amy do some pretty cool stuff with her bike and she can pick up it to! Cant believe she rode a heap of singles with it!
But there is already a DR650 in the shed so looks like that is the go for starters to see if i really enjoy it or not. I will try not to spam the site with dumb ass questions in the weeks to come …
June 25, 2013 at 11:23 am #244627No questions stupid Rach. I have built a few now, good things (not a Yamaha but almost as good)
Check these out, start a thread and do a build. You don’t need all the bells and whistles to start with. Ask away I love a project buildhttp://www.obtrailriders.com/index.php/forum?view=topic&catid=20&id=111810

June 25, 2013 at 11:56 am #237789Thanks for that, I am kind of looking forward to this. Always a bit hesitant to work on my KTM in case i cant put it back together for the next weekend which would = no ride
But with this I have a whole month to put it back together! What could possibly go wrong? (Hush – not a word!!)
