So at Tekniks last night picking up a hub for GPSDave and Nick showed me that air forks are really only air forks if that makes sense  I guess I knew and understood but seeing what happens with no air pressure blew me away excuse the pun

The concept of air forks really appeals to me. The downside is you are really reliant on your seals not being damaged. A leak in your seals during a race (or weekend ride for that matter) and the resulting “pimped” bike becomes a little less appealing. I’m guessing/hoping they have much stronger/more durable seals than the oil forks.

Wow that is …… Interesting. would this mean these bikes would require new fork seals as a part of its preventative maintenance. ?? If they do what sort if interval ??i would suppose these seals would fail in adverse conditions so what is the worst case scenario (service life) At least if they leaked you would not have the problem with fork oil ruining front brake efficiency. No you would be pulled up way before that. In saying all that I have ridden one those things on an mx track and the front end was the best thing about them. IMO.

Just ask Ryan Dungey what happens when you loose your air at the start gate. It happened to him last season but with the rear shock.

I just did a big muddy trail ride out ar Cobar a couple of weeks ago. There was a bunch of CRF450R 2013’s with the air forks. Several of them blew fork seals and the front ends collapsed. Not completely but they were sitting half way through the stroke, Rendering them unable to finish the ride. On a motocross track not a problem, but if you are on an ADV ride or trailride this can be a big issue if you’re miles from home.

If they would of been running traditional spring forks the result would have been a little bit of oil splashed around but no DNF. Hoping this technology doesn’t make it’s way into the offroad world anytime soon.

The forks tend to leak less than spring forks as the 35 odd psi energises the seals, making them less leak prone.
However there is still oil in the outer leg so you can get oil on your brake and have a collapsed front end.
Will never make it to adventure bikes in current form, with bladders maybe but that’s factory forks only for now.
