Well I didn’t get to ride this weekend, but our swing band had a gig which was great, so here’s the ride report for the gig!

We met at the club, at 7 for a 7:30 start, although there were a few who had arrived earlier to order meals. Luke had ordered a hamburger but there was no sign of it at 7 when I got there.

We set ourselves up and got ready to go, all fuelled and warmed up, with the exception of Luke, whose hamburger only showed up at 7:30! The bugger made us all wait too!

Anyway, there were a fair few of us at this ride. The XR’s (rhythm section) included Jackson on his XR600 (drums) who was with us for the last time, as well as Cedric’s XR650 (bass guitar). The small bores included a few 250’s (trumpets) and some 450’s (tenor and alto saxes including Luke, Bill, Val, Fred and I). There was a 510 (baritone sax) ridden capably by Bob. The big bangers consisted of three KTM950’s (trombones) lined up and let me tell you those buggers make the earth move!

The ride was a charity do, with proceeds going to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

Rob was leading from the front, setting the pace nicely. In what seemed to be a miracle, he was also sweep, rounding up the stragglers and the vocalist at the same time!

We set off a bit late, thanks to Luke and the hamburger! Our first track was a kickass instrumental called Drum Drone – sounds better than the title would predict actually! We moved on into a few others by Sinatra, Buble, Harry Connick Jr and others. Rob led us into Sway then followed that up with The Way You Look Tonight and I Could Only Whisper Your Name.

The pace was good, pretty quick, but we had a fair few breaks. It was amazing, every time Rob stopped us we seemed to be near a bar! How good is that?? Note for TB, this is a good idea for any future rides!

We headed through a heap of tracks, In The Mood, Moondance, Mack The Knife and heaps more. Luke was struggling a bit with the hamburger – I am sure I saw dancers dodging bits of lettuce and beetroot more than once! Rob had a moment – spilt my beer while leading and sweeping! Other than that there were no injuries or damage, which is always nice!

Anyway the ride finished up at about 11, with a huge rendition (from Render, meaning “to tear!”) of Saturday In The Park. I then had a 1 hour drive home in the rain but was snuggled in next to the missus by 12:30! :)

It was a good ride, although no OBT members could make it. Next time I’ll see if we can get a few more of you blokes out for the ride! Bring your missus, she’ll love it!

No photos unfortunately, as the pace was just too fast! Here’s a few from our previous gig. Conditions were very similar then so these will be fine!
