I suppose if the bike is dropped, an alloy tube could bend or kink and bugger up the throttle movement.
Plastic might self recover better

No Mate you have it backwards, the plastic will tear and bend then let dirt into the tube, the billet alloy wont do that and if it does get enough force into it to make it kink, you wont be riding more than likely, well you will be riding….an ambulance to the hospital….or if you are real lucky a helicopter…..lets hope that never happens hey

I had an alloy billet closed throttle tube on an XR600 a couple of years ago, it was a ballards one with a bearing in it, it came on the bike when I bought it 2nd hand, anyways it fell of the stand on a hillside and bent it and jammed and was no good anymore  So I fitted bark busters a plastic one and no dramas anymore, need B/B to protect the ends I reckon

Looks like I am wrong again Mate, stick with the plastic you will have no dramas….sorry Mick I tried…..and yes TB I have of heard this before, and a mate of mine solved it by running the tube a little further out on the end of the bar, but my own bike has the standard plastic because I too run Barjbuster’s, I meant Barkbuster, but its the same same to me

Mines worn really thin on my 650 Dave, its plastic, I may switch to an alloy with the end trimmed for the bark buster, I loved the alloy one it was very smooth but must have been the angle of the dangle when it fell over, but can I still run the bearing and B/B dave?

Yes TB I am sure you could linish(sp??) the end off really neat to enable the alloy tube to be used

It must be like a thrust bearing in the end of the tube?
Maybe a bearing shop will have a thrust bearing with a hole big enough to accept the Barjbuster mount thingy?

Nah! Too many moving parts that can fail or fill up with mud and go rusty me thinks.

    my 2 pesos

I am concerned about aluminium throttle tubes:
about the handlebars flexing and the throttle tube not,
plastic can be a much better bearing material than aluminium
the plastic can flex and hold on the bar while aluminium will always be a clearance fit in correct circumstances (without bearings)
bearings will also be concentrating the stresses, which could cause the bar to break at the bearing mount

saying all this, they have probably been used for years without problem

The one I have had for a year now hasn’t given me an ounce of trouble. It is still in it’s original wrapper hanging on a hook in my shed!! LOL
It is for sale for what I paid for it, from Coastal KTM..$99.95
Or will swap for an appropriate amount of alcohol.

I think we’ve arrived at the fact that there isn’t much point in buying an Aluminium one and Mick is stuck with the one he bought

Give you $50 bucks for it, not that I really want it, but will buy it and use it and just to see you take a loss, 50 is better than nothing
