For those budding cinematographers out there another sport camera has just hit the market, this time from Sony called the Sony Action Cam. It seems Sony have aimed this cam at the GoPro which is the current market leader.

Looks to be priced around the same range as the GoPro Hero 2. I’ve found prices between $299 – $399 but there appears to be two models, one with Wifi and one without. I can’t find full specs yet but it looks the goods. The 16mp Exmor CMOS sensor combined with a Carl Zeiss lens should produce some good image quality. Steady shot image stabilisation and Wifi with an app for smart phones. Full 1080 at 30fps and 720 up to 120fps which will be good for slow motion. Even has an option of a Gopro mount adaptor. 170 degree FOV, same as GoPro.

I’ve had Sony digital cameras in the past and still have a Cybershot H50 which I keep simply because its great for sports photography, I use it over my DSLR for my kids sports, its that good. Low light photography it’s not so good. If this cam lives up to its spec it could be a good thing.

At the rate I’m going I will kill the liquid image EGO in no time and may look at one of these. I’ve been having fun with the EGO just making stupid video’s for my own amusement. Might just put an order in for Christmas anyway.

It’s another option out there anyway and as far as I know the first from one of the bigger camera companies. No doubt GoPro will fire back with something new.
