I have an 07 WR450 and like most WR’s the forks leak. I have replaced the seals with genuine Yammie seals but they have started to leak again. I have already bought a set of All Balls seals and want to use them, cause I have already paid for them.

My question is other than everything that is in the manual with installing seals is there anything else that I should do to install them?

If this set of seals starts leaking I am going to look at doing a conventional fork set up on my bike like I have seen on one of the Ballards bikes.

Hey Dan, we used to run double lipped seals and seal savers and this helped alot but the brake side seal always used to be the one to go!! Its just a WR thing mate. You would think that after all the WR models that Yamaha have built they would have fixed this problem by now.

i just used seel savers on my old wr (stuby holders i called them) did not have many troubles with my old 2000 wr400 forks they just were very hard on the body after a full day riding.have seen you can get full length seel savers now reckon they would make usd forks as reliable as normal ones with fork gaters.

Dan mine uses the last generation of the 46mm and the yamaha seal were notorious for leaking in them, but I’ve got a set of teflony double lipped thingies now and nary a weep for 18 months, the KTM was the same until terry haye put something similar in for me. The ’07 YZ forks were supposed to be pretty good gear, obviously the WR didn’t share the same ones, o and for the uninitiated the forks aren’t Yamaha, they’re Kayaba/KYB, I don’t know of a manufacturer that makes their own shocks or forks, although I seem to remember Showa are owned by Honda.

Yamaha may not make the shocks but if they choose to use them on there bikes and the seals keep failing you would think they would work with kayaba and fix them or use another brand.
At the end of the day the buck stops with Yamaha.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I will try the All Balls seals that I have and will look around for the full length seal savers. Its not really a biggy I suppose I just hate the leaking.

Like I said before if this doesn’t work I will hunt ebay for a set of right way up forks and get some spacers made for the triple clamps.

Or I could just buy a KTM like Rocket suggested  it wouldn’t be the first time that I have turned coat on my favourite colour :P

Maybe time to put some new split bushes in
I think once they wear it enables unwanted sideways movement thus giving the seals a hard time :(
    Food for thought mate

I had a bit of oil on the legs when I bought my WR second hand but after Teknik weaved their valving magic they used new seals and I have not lost 1 mil of oil since. I don’t know what seals they use but my problem is solved.

    Hey Dan,
My son has had 3 sets of seals on his 06 450 and they seem to be holding up a bit better this time, I put new seals in my 04 450 a year ago and they are fine? just the luck of the draw I guess.
Now I would’nt want to see a yamaha pilot go orange, how about buying some Kato front forks and putting them in…much better forks than the standard wr?

    I actually have a set of 50mm Marzocchi’s sitting here from a 99 Kato – offers?

Dan they have issues that go beyond seals from the sound of it, the chrome Ok?
    Not bent?
Bushes are most likely the culprit, as the forks are actually very good with a revalve, certainly better than the stuff offered on most KTMs ex-factory.
You could get a set of SSS KYB YZ forks from Ebay USA for the cost of a rebuild and they are s’posed to be in the top three around.

There’s more going on here than meets first glance I tells ya.

gady Dan. My forks seals went all he time on the 07 wr. a trick i learned after installing seals was to pump the forks up and down a few times before nipping up the axle and lock nuts. it seemed to set the forks in place and i diddnt have any other dramas, apart from it being stolen!!
But ive got a brand spanker 09 wr now so we’ll see how she goes!
