1st off sorry if this is in the wrong area, but i could not think of where was best.
some ‘friends’ of mine ride there december/ january most years for about 5 yrs or so.
i’m thinking of going this year, the only thing is it will be my first time, and some/ most of those that have ridden there before think maybe even believe they are the guru’s on ridding there.
and that ‘noobs’ have no say on their riding ability = as if they are able to ride there.
and they all believe that i could not take my 640 where they go on their kato300 , xr400’s and a husky wr360. and 1 was on a rmx 250 the year i camped there, but did not take my bike.
from what i have seen of the ride report where the bikes had to be helped up the rocky climb.
the woods point area is about the same.
they 4wd where they take the bikes, so from what i have seen 1st hand i could ride there.
i’m not saying it will be an easy ride, but i reckon Katie and i are up to it.
April 17, 2009 at 12:33 am #129526XY, i have ridden around woods point area back in my “early riding” days. i will get back there one day too. i must say its where i met the first hill i couldnt conquer. i reckon it might just be the same hill your talking about. it is steep, rocky, it seems to go on for ever and the last 30 odd metres are “steps”. it is just a prick.
heres the story.
i went up to woods point with 3 mates somewhere around 1999. (i only started ridin in ’98). there was me on my TT350, chooky on his near new ktm250-2T, gazza on a new wr400 and lozza on his trusty old xr400. as i said, i was still learning (and i still am now!) and was doin my best to keep up with these blokes. rounding a corner with full opposite lock at speed i found a 10 metre boghole, shit myself, highsided it and skipped across the water like id just come off a ski-biscuit. i was rooted…..and mildly concussed. but not to be beaten. i kept goin.
i caught up to the fellas a couple of minutes later at the bottom of this hill. chooky went first and the bastard made it, even if he was off the bike running next to it for the last bit. i had a crack next and managed to get all the way up to the “steps”, but binned it and watched my bike tumble back down the hill. gazza went next and did the same thing as me. only he nearly cried watching his new WR tumble. lozza had a go and made it look easy. reaching the top in one go. me and gazza tried another half a dozen times to no avail. my head was thumping by now from my earlier dance across the boghole, and gaz, bein a little bloke with a big bike was just plain rooted. we gave up.
lozza, who was near 50yo back then, and has had most of his heart replaced with new valves from various animals, walked down the hill and jumped on my TT and rode it up, kissing the front guard most of the way, like it was a molehill!!!
then he walked down the hill again and rode the WR up too. no dramas.
to add some salt to my wounds, he reckoned the TT was the easiest to ride up on. go figure…crazy old fool.
gazza and i took about half an hour to walk/stagger/crawl to the top.
when we got there we found an old FJ40 V8 cruiser sitting precariously. on its dashboard sat its front tailshaft, twisted like a bon-bon. there was a note saying…ill be back next week sitting next to it.
i felt a bit better knowing that the hill that nearly killed me also killed the cruiser!!
we rode back to camp “the easy way” as we were all rooted.
the next day was pissing down so bad that the tracks were rivers. lozza in all his wisdon decided we should all go 4wding. we all agreed out of boredom and piled into his spanking new jacked up, big tyred hilux. he went straight back to “the hill” to give it a go. it was like climbin a waterfall.
with some heavy reefin on the wheel we made it up as far as the steps and started to climb them. the front end bounced of one and i swear for a moment we were sitting nearly vertical, teetering on the towbar. we started bouncing back down the hill…backwards. somehow the car turned around while bouncing and we stopped at the bottom of the hill in one piece. gazza, who was in the front was upsidedown in his seat, feet hanging out the window, and me and chooky had swapped positions in the back seat. we still dont know how that happened..LOL. so we cruised back to woods point and got pissed. it was one of the scariest moments of my life. i still have the odd nightmare of it to this day.anyway, there is some wicked riding around there, just watch out for old mine shafts. and 4WDs. and deer hunters. (some of those rednecks will shoot in your general direction cause they dont like riders scaring off their deer).
i reckon i could conquer that hill now. one day i will.the town itself is a kooky place. the pub is wicked. the publican, Don, is a crackup, not sure if hes still there, but he sings a mean version of Danny Boy when hes pissed. when the pub shuts, he locks everyone in and keeps drinkin!!
the local postie rode a sic XR600 with an extended swingarm. it looked like a widowmaker bike. he reckoned it was a neccesity for delivering the mail around there. he was a crazy f*cker.
we stayed in a little shack between the tennis court and the river. owned by a mate of a mate of a mate.
the gaffneys creek pub was a top place too. ride up to the door, walk in covered in mud, and have a beer with some 7 foot tall lumberjacks, while standing in front of the fire, steaming yourself dry. grouse!!
unfortunately the pub burnt down a couple of years ago in the fires.to be honest, its probably some of the best and hardest riding in victoria.
i have faith in ya XY, why couldnt a 640 get around there.
i would get some new tyres before you go though. you will need them.if there is a spare spot, i might beg to come too, just to beat that f**cking hill for once and for all.
menace.
April 17, 2009 at 1:09 am #129559Very nice story there spidy however I will need you to clear one thing up for me in the story you said there was a hill you couldnt get up, I`m not a 100% sure but is that kind of talk in the superheros hand book??????
April 17, 2009 at 1:10 am #129527Thanks for the vote of confidence Mr Ace!
i’m thinking i’d rather ride it with others than the guys i know. they tend to rubbish others without seeing them ride, and because they are all >120 kg they could not handle the 640 the way i do. they all believe that i could not get it into / along the single tracks up there, or over the logs.
my shadow is 100kg on it’s own.:woohoo:
“if you cannot lift your own bike up from laying down, onto/ off a stand, or a trailer / ute you should not be ridding it!”. to quote ME:P
but i will not attempt to ride there on my own! just in case.
may be we can see about organizing a date to go, but you’ll have to talk Mrs Ace into coming so if we’re not back by bottle ( bourbon ) and tuck in time, someone is there to alert the medivac chopper
April 17, 2009 at 1:18 am #129560actually boondog…
i stated…”i must say its where i met the FIRST hill i couldnt conquer”…
it was only because id run out of web….like d’errr
there has been a few more since:laugh:
what you doin on boonman, did you pull a sicky????
April 17, 2009 at 1:21 am #129563Nah found way round filter Shhhhh
April 17, 2009 at 1:54 am #129562ahhh stuff em mate,
it doesnt matter what bike your on up there, specially the single trail, there will be logs and sh!t that everybody will have to lift bikes over, so whats an extra 20 odd kilos gonna mean when yous are liften bikes.I say, get some good tyres, not like those slicks you have now, take off the indicators and crap, cause you WILL break them otherwise, and get up there and show them up!!
i weighed in at 116 kitted up yesterday. i took my bike to krooztune to get the shock resprung and revalved to carry my fat ar$e. oh well, i drink, i smoke, i ride. so what! (not all at the same time, mind you).
and to quote YOU,
“if you cannot lift your own bike up from laying down, onto/ off a stand, or a trailer / ute you should not be ridding it!”.
i would like to add, if you have an “electric leg”, and you cant KICKSTART your bike, you shouldnt be riding it!!yeah, id be up for another ride up there. you gotta go before winter as it is up near the snowline and can be f**king cold.
i dont know the area well, its been a while, but ive got a map and a gps. we should make a date in a month or so. there are a few of us down here now, me, billt, micks brother ant, maybe smurf too.now im getting excited:woohoo: :woohoo:
April 17, 2009 at 3:18 am #129528yeah the “slicks” will have to go by then.
they were not my choice, they were on it when i got it back after the 300 episode.
i just wanted to get out of that shop asap so i did not end up with a new flat screen tv,new pool table and new boyfriend…..……..
“a personalized number plate dose not mean your old man, uncle or nephew made it.”
April 17, 2009 at 1:40 pm #129572funnily enough, my mate chooky (from the prevoius post) rolled up for a beer this arvo. f*ck we were laughin about those times. suprisingly, he came round talkin bout gettin a new bike. we need him for woods point. he has a gps built into his brain, like an abbo on walkabout. he can get us back from anywhere mate.
hes a good bloke too. i was raggin him to join up with OBT. and i wont stop till he does:woohoo:
April 19, 2009 at 9:32 am #129632hey XY,
what do you reckon about this maybe.?????

sure beats camping in winter…
sammy says, she is keen to ride….or i’ll jst read a book or something ehile you boys ride…., she says, (thats why i married her)
they supply food, bring your own piss!!!:woohoo:
maybe even talk Mrs XY (if there is one?) into coming!!!
or just bring those blokes who bag everyone and we’ll (try???) to show them up:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
i could talk one or two blokes into it;)
April 19, 2009 at 10:39 am #129722Hey Menace,
looks good, be interesting to find out prices. beats trecking back to Jameson for ice every few days!
i reckon if any from OBT are going, i won’t bother with the others. ( even if it’s just u, me ‘n’ spidyett )
the homestead is quite a distance from the one hill they all want to ride.
however the homestead stay would out weigh the “thrill” of riding that hill!
what date ball park would you be thinking?
my time is pretty much my own, so dates apart from a few weekends are free. just money sometimes runs out  but should scrape enough for a stay down there, i’m planning on going this year, but just with whom and when is all that’s to be finalised.
i’m hoping i can make the Hanging rock ride as wellB) before tackling the high country.
oh yeah and no Mrs Xy. thats why not go there on my own. no one to call the Helivac:kiss:
i’m sure Sammy could ride with us, i WON’t be saying “stay here while we ride”. if she’s game……
oh been back to TT since your introduction!?
got some snot there with the cheek to copy my OBT user name
