Asterisk Knee Braces
Firstly I have never had a serious knee injury but was always aware the stress our sport puts on your knees, I am a big guy and thus when riding for long periods I find my knees suffer e.g. 4 day 2006 I was struggling of a morning with my knees being so sore, I know braces wont stop that but its an eye opener as to how bad it could be to have a knee injury. Add to the pain, the time of work and the financial stress most of us would be under to be laid up for three months or so.
I started looking around at braces, I spent months talking to people that wear braces, checking on the net reading reports, punters opinions, experts thoughts and so called experts thoughts. I found that I could spend anything from $190.00 to $2000.00 a leg on braces. Some brace companies custom make the braces for you and would refit them should you lose / gain weight etc over the years!
I settled on the Asterisk Knee Braces, I priced them all over Australia and the best price I could get was $1150.00 for the set. I then priced them overseas and purchased them for $635.00 for the pair, freight was $65 which included a new Bell helmet so I was still about $500.00 in front.
They are fiddly to set up the first time, I did it at home with a Bundy Rum and had no dramas, there are a lot of adjustments but once its done you shouldn’t have to do it again.
The first ride I wore them I thought this will be interesting, expecting them to rub or have some breaking in / discomfort. Once on the bike I noticed that gripping the tank was very different easier a lot easier, my legs felt strangely wider apart than before but I quickly adjusted to it or put it out of my mind. The ride turned out to be a shit fight in that we got bogged and did our own mini erzberg enduro, it was during this walking pushing dragging I thought I have knee braces on! Yes they are that comfortable, I had to mentally remind myself. At the end of the ride I looked for marks on my legs that may have shown rubbing etc but nothing. I am very happy with the Asterisk knee braces being that they aren’t the $2000 a leg jobs I believe them to be the best of the shelf fit braces. Now that I am old (my kids say so anyway) I am looking to do everything as I always have but realize that I am not bullet proof and some extra protection is the go.
Attached are some of the details regarding the braces.
Cheers
TBAdvanced Strength Carbon Fibber Technology:
Carbon fibber injection melding process creates a strong, lightweight, rigid structure to help withstand forces and protect the knee. Ergonomically designed frame for an improved intimate feel for the bike.Telescoping Patella Cup:
This special design will cover the kneecap area in a straight leg position and in a bent position including coverage of the areas above and below the kneecap.Oblique Axial-Free Motion Hinge
The only hinge ever developed that can contour the inside of a leg at an oblique angle to the outside hinge. This allows for a low profile fit. Simulates the natural knee motion of flexion (bending) and extension (straightening) and automatically aligns /locates /positions /the tibia (shin bone) for a proper fit. Prevents slipping and positioning of the frames on the leg and has a “free” non-restrictive motion. Auto aligning allows for the frame to automatically locate the correct angle of the user’s lower leg.Lace-Linear Buckle System
Lace linear for secure comfortable fit. Prevents “roping” across the muscles securing the frame to the leg comfortably. Provides increased protection and eliminates slipping. No stretch laces glide through abrasion resistant lace loops for even distribution and a comforting fit. Single fibber quick release.Adaptable Tendon Cuff:
Attaches to the upper and lower frame wrapping the thigh and calf. Special tendon stripes retain stiffness at adjusted positions to maintain structural integrity for increased support and protection.Thermo-Formed Padding Interface:
Thermo-formed for intimate frame and cuff fit. Increases impact resistance. Self cantering tibia padding design for shin alignment and comfort.Features
• A.C.M. Frame
• Anatomically correct design
• Carbon Fibber Epoxy Matrix
• Rigid & Lightweight, Impact-Distributing structure
• Asymmetry-Glide Hinge
• Tracks the natural “rolling-gliding” motion of the knee joint
• Asymmetrical design allows each hinge to set properly at the knee joint
• Adjustable ext. regulator from 0° to 40°
• Uni-Quad Fastener
• One knot, Four adjustment zones
• “Hyper X” lacing pattern links zones 2& 3 for optimum extension resistance
• Eliminates brace slippage
• Distributes pressure evenly to the back of the leg
• Superior security to strapping
• Tele-Tri Patella Cup
• Telescoping Three piece design
• High impact Nylon 6 material
• Full range of motion overage of the knee cap
• Thermo-Formed EV50 shock absorbent foam padding
• Thermo-Formed Padding
• Thermo-Formed for precise A.C.M Frame and A.R.C Cuff fit

• Low profile
• Water Resistant
• Non-corrosive metals
• Non-corrosive composites
• Hand washable soft materials
• Anti-Rotation Tether
• Links the brace to the boot, making them as one
• Transfer forces of a lower leg rotation and disperses them into the upper A.R.C. Cuff

September 25, 2008 at 1:44 pm #108609Good review Greg, they are high on the list of thing’s I should aquire…………..ahhhhhhh so many thing’s to get and so little money, trust me you guy’s when I say if you have ever had ligament or tendon damage to your joints they make a broken bone look appealing strange as that sounds I reckon it’s the truth as the bloody thing’s ache and creak all the time.
Greg was it hard to work out the sizing,I would worry that they would not fit me and then would have to dick around returning them to the states and such.
Gee’s they would be handy for the ride this weekend……been told that there will be a minimum of 35 bikes going that’s just great:dry: what’s the chances of it being a trouble free affair;) ,I might stay at the pub with no beer and see if it is true:laugh: .PS, sexxxxxxxy legs mate:laugh:
