It was definately bags of fun at Kundabung, during and after the ride:woohoo: :woohoo: It was my first Old Bulls ride and if they are all like this one, where are we going next weekend! Thanks heaps to Fossil for the hospitality and showing us your back yard, you’re definately blessed with some great trails right from your back door.

My favourite bits of the day:

Mick’s tube changing lesson on Cylinder Hill:laugh: 12 klms out of a new tire, not bad for a bloke who’s never had a flatB)

dodging bullet like rocks from both those big XR’s

Shell the sweep’s patience while I picked myself up again and again and again.

The lovely clean water in them there hills. My bike, boots and riding gear was cleaner than when I left home. I’m going to fit a snorkle to the Husky so she can breath under water:woohoo: :woohoo:

And the BBQ, Beers and Banter.

    Great Day.

Fossil is a lucky bloke to have what we rode on Saturday at his back door,1000’s of acres of relatively unmolested bush.
    The crew for the ride was;
    Fossil CRF250X
    Michelle CRF250X
    Kram140 Husky 310
    Tripper XR600R
    Mick XR650R
8am saw us at Fossil’s place at the same time as Kram140 with his new Husky 310 in tow, with a few quick intos we were kitted up and ready to rip, Fossil had mapped out 90km of trails he described as big XR heaven and I was keen to get out there on the new BRP.
We headed out of his back gate into the bush and with the perfect conditions with minimal dust the pace was on right from the offset.
In the first couple of KM Fossil pulled us up at the bottom of a hill and told us to wait while he went ahead, so he could video us getting up a rock step up on the hill. Nothing like having someone with a camera to put that added bit off pressure on when you get to a gnarly section!!
I took off first and as the step up came into view, a lantana stick went straight up my left nostril, which instantly had my eyes watering, just to add to the difficulty level of the step up, I do believe I actually hit the step up with my eyes closed as I was surprised that I actually made it. Everyone accounted well for themselves on the step up and we were soon on our way again.
Trippers XR chucked a bit of a tizzy fit and wouldn’t start for love or money soon after that, in the end we resorted to clutch starting it and it didn’t miss a beat all day after that.
At the 12km mark we had another hill climb that was strewn with besser block size and shaped rocks all strategically placed behind the erosion mounds, waiting for a trailbike rider to come along that was silly enough to jump the mound. I was that silly rider.
In midair I saw the rock and all the mid air weight changes weren’t going to change the trajectory of the XR and the back wheel hit the rock hard. Lucky for me I didn’t come off and with Tripper hot on my arse I was on the gas again only to find out how hard XR650’s are to ride with a dead flat back tyre.
Bugger!! My brand new (read 12km old) IRC knobbie had a hole in the sidewall that you could put your finger in and the tube had an even bigger hole in it that my patch kit wasn’t gunna fix. To my amazement Tripper pulls out a spare front tube he picked up in my shed from his Camelbak. Trouble was it was a spare front tube for Connors KX85, luckily it fitted nicely, probably better than a 21 inch tube. I dumped the air from two of those air cylinders in it and discovered that there still wasn’t enough air in the tyre, Fossil produced a little pump from his Camelbak and 3000 pumps later we had 15lb of air in the tyre and were on our way again.
We headed off and rode a great variety of trails, sweet little singles through rainforest, rocky hills and some more open stuff where you could let the XR have its head and really rip along. We stopped at a lovely little creek for a break and the ground was like 3 feet deep compost and Fossil was silly enough to walk behind the XR while I was still on it,so what did I do?? What every mate would do…I filled him in good. Sorry about that Fossil,I am sure you will get me back one day….LOL
All the creek crossings up there have basketball sized boulders strewn about and they make the crossings a real challenge as Kram140 found out when he dropped the Husky on its side in about 2 feet of water, quick thinking and a tiny bit of luck saw the Husky keep running without sucking a gut full of water, although Kram got his boots nice and full of freezing cold mountain stream water.
From there the ride went smoothly apart from a few minor dirt naps, with no injuries or bike damage. It was decided at about 1pm to head back for a beer and with Fossil leading the way a little bit of a race started to ensue between him and I and the pace was really on!! We were cracking along well and to my surprise Tripper came out of nowhere and overtook us both in a shower of rocks and sticks and he left us in his wake. His riding style on the CAT XR is a sight to behold when he is in full flight and he had me in stitches laughing as nothing was gunna catch him when there were beers on offer at the end. After 90.8km of great trails we pulled into Fossils gate again all smiles. A few beers, a few sausage sangers and a ton of laughs topped of a great day. Thanks Fossil we will have to do that again soon.
I certainly was “bags of fun”

    Fossil and Crew,

What a day!!! there is just so much fantastic riding out there and many thanks to Fossil for showing us round. A bit of everything as Tripper described. Best time of year to ride.
Bonus’s being Kram’s Autumn half hour (he fell of everything), the Cat 600 performance anxiety, and Micks Enduro tyre change. Of course the 2 x CRF’s ran perfectly all day. Gotta love that magic button!!
Thanks again guys it’s always bags of fun riding with the crew.
I was pretty chuffed to be back in one piece at the end of the day and you can’t go past a beer and a snag to round off a great morning.

    Cheers Shell

Why is my tube repair rating so many mentions?? I thought I did ok for my first one in the bush, considering what I had to work with. A tube for a 85,two tiny air cylinders and a tiny little masturbator pump.

I was surprised / Shocked you went for a ride of that length without a tube yourself? Whats that about? I had to give you a tube for the Hillend ride (that you bloody lost anyway lol)

Maybe a little more prep Mick, what about if no one had a tube with them, cant hope on everybody else :P

Cost B Grabham an Australian Safari title

I had patches and all the gear actually but the tube had a huge hole in it,that could possibly have been patched if I was desperate.
I will be setting myself up for flats a little better though in the future.

I won`t leave home without one,,,I actually got one that is dual action,,IE: pumps air when you pull the handle out and when you push it back in,,apparently saves time.

We’ll have to start calling you 2 stroke boony… Looks like a great ride guys fossil is certainly a lucky bugger having that in his back yard.

    Cheers
    Chris.
