Hi all,
Looking to buy a replacement battery for my 300. Anyone have any experience with a “better” battery than the OEM type/capacity battery?
If noticed Motobatt and Antigravity brands that are alternatives. Are they worth the extra money? (double the cost of a Yuasa)February 16, 2011 at 3:35 pm #196925Axel,
Bought my DRZ new in May last year. The Yuasa in it lasted about 3 months. Went down to Suto’s and bought the Motorbatt for around $89 have not had a problem since. I also bought one of those sexy little charger / conditioner things for about the same cost of the battery.
Money well spent
TB,
As I’m in Melbourne, you may be able to assist Axel with the charger type that I bought.Cheers Gaz
February 16, 2011 at 3:58 pm #196929Thanks Gaz, that’s good to know. The Yuasa in there at the moment probably last about the same here too. I have a charger already that’s wired into the bike. It can only help the battery survive longer but if it’s a bad battery, it’s stuffed. I probably only ever elect started my 300 maybe 50 times since I’ve owned it. I kick it most times due to lack of cranking power. It’s reading 11-12V now (stuffed).
$89 is good value. The antigravity Li battery is very light and supposedly is good for 4-5 years. $200 however.
If the Motobatt is the proven product amongst us then say no more.
Last thing, us 300 owners usually require a more powerful battery than the 250/450 4st bikes (diff starter/system). Looks like Motobatt recommends the same battery however. Are there any 300 owners happy/unhappy with the recommended model?February 16, 2011 at 4:22 pm #196930I have had the same battery in my DRZ since I bought it new (the bike not the battery) in March 2008 and haven’t had any problems with it other than when I was working overseas and it spent months just sitting there. The battery went flat during that time but once I charged it up again it has been fine ever since.

Haven’t had to change battery yet on mine and I use it all the time. What I have found though is the brushes have worn out once (about $20-$30 from memory) and the contact on the armature (if that is the correct name for the part that spins) gets covered in carbon. They are very easy to pull apart. I paid someone the first time because I was a bit worried but when it needed to be done again I had to man up. All I did the second time was take the wire brush to the contact area and it then started like it never has before. Better than from new. My bike has never started on the button cold from the day I got it. After a clean it starts cold now on the button.
Not saying your battery is not rooted. Voltage says it is anyway. Just saying there are other factors that may put things back in your favour and take the load of the battery. Don’t get me started on the hydraulic clutch not fully letting go either for starting in gear. Thats where most of the extra load comes from I reckon and extra load leads to the carbon deposits.
February 18, 2011 at 2:26 pm #197033Good info Roy. I have a spare set of brushes from the last lot from the states. When I get a new battery I’ll pull the motor down for a clean and check. Cheers
February 20, 2011 at 12:25 pm #197034Scott from Suttos hooked me up with a nice Motobatt battery at a hard to refuse price. All sorted!
