Just been told there were some bikes stolen from East Maitland and Thornton recently, the owners have said they thought they were followed home and the bikes were stolen that night so just remember to lock up your bikes properly and be aware when coming home from rides about being followed. If you think you might be, get the rego number in case something does happens.
The article in the HeraldMAITLAND police are warning off-road, motocross and trail bike riders to be careful following a spate of bold thefts across the Central Hunter Local Area Command.
Police fear some riders have been followed home by the thieves who go after the latest model bikes, some costing as much as $12,000.
It was a double whammy for brothers Brent and Shaun Grubb on Sunday night when more than $20,000 worth of bikes and riding equipment was stolen from a secure shed on their Thornton property.
The theft followed a similar incident at East Maitland on December 22 when a KTM 530 and a Yamaha YZ450 were stolen early morning.
During Sunday night’s incident, thieves cut through a fence, broke down a roller door to the family’s shed and used bolt cutters on a heavy duty chain to take two Suzuki RMZ 450s (a 2010 model and a 2008 model).
They also took racing clothes and helmets.
“I wasn’t home but my parents were and they didn’t hear a thing. The dogs didn’t even bark,” Brent said.
“We discovered the bikes missing about 5.30am and we were devastated. They even stole my dirty riding clothes.”
Brent said the shed was about 20 metres from the family house.
Neither bike was insured.
Graeme Boyd, of Graeme Boyd Motorcycles at Broadmeadow, is offering a $2000 reward for information that will lead to the conviction of the thieves who stole the brothers’ bikes.
Chief Inspector Dave Robinson of Central Hunter Local Area Command said there had been a spate of bike thefts across the command with up to seven bikes stolen a month.
“The figures aren’t staggering but they are unacceptable and we need to get them down,” he said.
“A number of people have told us they believed they were followed home from riding destinations and that evening their bikes were stolen.”
January 5, 2010 at 1:51 am #167080Same M.O used up this way recently, they were going to the races and following people home in a Blue Commodore ute.Turns out they too got followed by some savvy people from our club and they were busted,as it turns out the grubs were from Newcastle and were getting orders for specific bikes.

January 5, 2010 at 4:04 am #167081Flaming Scumbags
I heard about the one on Dec 22 from a guy at work(where i USED TO WORK)
Just goes to show, you might think your bikes & gear are safe, but these dirtbags will go to any lengths to seek them out!!!
I often wonder about guys that parade round with their big trailers & stickers all over their cars etc,,, Must be a kind of adertising for the theives to come on in & grab some stuff I reckon
Keep your gear out of sight, don`t leave bikes out on show or even gear on the line.
Invest in some sort of alarm system if you can, it might help,,, Maybe :huh:January 5, 2010 at 5:02 am #167093Another thing to be mindfull of. Is limit full noise testing of your bike in the shed or yard. I already have pinpointed a new person in our area with a 4T motocrosser by the revving of his bike in the shed.
If I can pin point him so can the scumbags.January 5, 2010 at 5:51 am #167082What about getting the BIGGEST MADASSED DOG You can get & chaining him to the bike on ATTACK MODE
Rip the legs & arms off the scum where they standJanuary 5, 2010 at 6:06 am #167097No good. Not only do you expose yourself to litigation but what do you do when the pricks bait it? Insurance is the only way to create some peace of mind and beyond that just be careful.
January 5, 2010 at 6:34 am #167083i have never had any theft at my place i dont exaclty live in the best part of town either i worry alot about the bikes being stolen i chain them up and put disc locks on them and they are insured but i allways make sure when i come home from a ride their is no one watching me drive into my drive, and i try and start it up only when i’m ready to leave and go quickly so that they dont know where i came from. i try not too leave it any where insight and if i see some one near my house when i get home i go round the block and come back to make sure their is no one around :woohoo:

January 5, 2010 at 12:47 pm #167139I used to have the best deterrent, Reggie my old 45 kilo food trained, alpha male border collie who took no prisoners, or food unless one particular word was said to him, dragged a bloke backwards out of our old neighbours kitchen window once and saved my missus from being attacked on the way home from work one night, just 2 instances of many. Unfortunately he died in ’08 at 15……. but I did get his great grandson and Reg’s former offsider is till here(big big angry suspicious natured golden bitch) and he taught them well before he shuffled off, nothing but nothing gets in our yard unless we are aware of them, the council ordered us to build a fence halfway up the yard as they said people have a right to access your front door in business hours, fair enough.
But the urban myths about being sued by a would be thief is wrong, if the dog is contained in it’s domain and someone is trespassing, game over just been involved in a case such as this last october at work, however you must allow that egress during business hours. Also have a few other deterrents and while given time and tools anything can be gotten at, mine would be fairly difficult, not impossible, just not worth the hassle, too much hard work, and as we all suspect these mongrels hate that phrase.
