G’day, very, very new to this, however this site is BRILLIANT!. I live in southwest Victoria and are currently doing up a 96 xr 600 to do an outback trip ( been working on the bike for 2 years $$$$$$$$$ !!!) anyway after being F###D around by spanners the xr is almost ready almost. The info on TM 38 jetting was extremly helpfull but what is the best suited jetting. I have 1mm over size piston less than 1 km old and a BRAND NEW mikuni tm 38 carby I was told to run a 12.5 needle jet and a 230 main jet I would love to know what the pilot jet is but I can’t get the float pin out.The reason I got the mikuni is I was sick of the flat spot/sticky throttle on the oem carby. Now I still have the same problem and IF! I do get it started ( which I have after hours & hours of kicking) it back fires blows a little black smoke, what appears to look like steam constantly coming from the pipe (stock) & then when I twist the throttle ( still sticks ) it either stalls or farts & pops away. This bike has cost me almost 2 new dr 650’s (this includes the gear to do the trip,I bought the xr as I am on less than a shoe string budget & now more broke than Italy ) I phoned Ballards this morning in hoping they could & they said that I needed a different slide & needle I could buy the needle but not the slide? The curent needle is a 6fj40. I did not get the carby from Ballards. They also said that without the slide it was pointless getting “there” needle so I bought a 210 & a 220 main jet, they should be here Wed. I am ropable at this point any HELP would be GR8tly appreciated cheers F###N bike

Welcome again mate. As discussed I have given you the jetting specs Mick had in his and I will speak with Nick Doyle tomorrow and get him to read the thread and maybe add his thoughts. Lefty has been playing with Chickens as well he may have some input

You could try putting the standard carby back on and get it running first. That will tell if the problem is the carby and not the rebuild. Just a thought but well worth it I reckon takes you back to a known starting point
