I haven’t pulled a carby apart in about 10years so it’ll be another learning experience :)

thanks for the help so far everyone.

I’ll be optimistic, I have had the same bike in a past life: clean carb and airbox nice. Set your oil height spot on (hot 1/2 way, cold 1/8 way). Ride it around and give it hell (without dropping it). Check airbox for oil. Chances are it will be fine and dandy.
If there is an un-healthy amount of oil then assume rings and tear the thing down and see. Valve clearances? You shouldn’t need to touch anything major for at least 200-250hrs.
I will say however, that I opted to not run CP kits because the high(er) compression that those things ran at gave me a bad feeling. Same as JE, high compression. I ran Wiseco as they were the only aftermarket kit that had standard compression pistons. Sadly I put that bike into the too hard basket and offloaded it. EXCs with SX motors ….

My valves have been fine with the high comp set up for the past 1600kms or so. I’ve been a tad slack and not done it yet but should do tomorrow.

booked in for my pre-provisonal course and test on friday but i’ll be hiring a bike for the day to do that since I don’t have blinkers etc. and I’m even a tad anxious about what jacket I’ll wear :0

I did the same thing, hired a bike. There were a couple of wise guys there who brought their WRF bikes along only to have major issues with RWC. Not worth it.

Yeah I figured that too and that’s also why I’m worried about my jacket because they said they can knock you back if you don’t have appropriate gear and since I don’t ride on the road I don’t have road gear!

Are you sure you didnt over fill the engine oil as this is the major cause of oil out the breather and easyest fixed There was a wr450 with the same problem here on the weekend

100% I’ve been keeping a very keen eye on it with my recent issues. Its also the third ride without touching the oil. Good suggestion though I did read that also.

I wouldn’t jump to the conclusion of rings Brent. You can them by testing the compression in the cylinder if needed.

I was riding with a mate from work and he had exactly the same thing happen on his bike. I was in front and a guy from another group riding a 525 KTM stopped him and told him about it. As soon as he saw it he checked the airbox and it was full of oil. After we got the oil out the bike blew smoke for about 30 minutes and has been fine ever since.

So I agree with TB’s statement above, it’s unlikely your rings have all of a sudden given up.

I cleaned the airbox out (clean and dirty side) then took the carby, vent hose and valve cover off and gave them all a good flush out including removing the float bowl. I’ve put it all back together but the battery was flat and I’m too buggered to kick it so I’ve put the C-tek on it and will give it a go tomorrow with a catch can and then report back.

The vent hose had some white-ish oil in it – would you guys agree that’s just from the petrol mixing with the oil? I haven’t dumped my oil but took a look at the sight glass and it looks good.

    Cheers,

    Trent

White normally means water moisture in the oil, could be water from when you washed it though so wouldn’t be to worried just yet

Yeah I’m sure if I had a problem with water the oil in the sight glass would tell the story. I might put a little oil and petrol together in a jar and see if it also has the same effect.

Blue, as TB mentioned, I think the whitish oil residue will be water, not fuel. But also in agreement with TB, and given your oil in the sightglass is clear, it is most likely reidue moisture in the breather hose from when it was washed or ridden last. My guess anyway.

Let us know how you go mate!

White is definitely water. I left my black used engine out over the weekend from louee and when I got back on SUnday I realised I had left it out, it was as white as a snowy Christmas :P
