No oil in the housing or in the vent hose. I bled the coolant not long ago and haven’t boiled it yet the the fins are exposed so I’ve definitely used coolant. There was about a 2c peice of whitish oil on the valve bridge and the rest looks ok but the oil in the sight window is now slightly higher, green slime look and some white residue on the glass. As I posted previously this wasn’t the case on tuesday.
October 1, 2009 at 9:18 am #154805I just drained the oil and it looks kind ok I think??? I expected some definite milkiness but it is quite consistent in colour which is a very dark green.
I’m thoroughly confused to the point that I just checked the sight glass again in case I was imagining a problem but sure enough it still has the white smear across the inside of it.
October 1, 2009 at 9:23 am #154812Leave the oil out and pressurize the cooling system and see if any coolant comes out the sump plug hole.
Check your oil filter for debris, if both are ok fill it with oil and ride the bastard !

October 1, 2009 at 9:29 am #152650I don’t have a compressor – any other way to pressurise the radiator? I’ll pull the oil screens out too shortly but the oil has no debris. I’m lost how there’s water in the sight glass and that’s caused it to stall….
Do you think I should pull the head off and put a new set of gaskets and piston in it?
plug looked fine when I pulled it too *bangshead*

Failing that, try repco or supercheap etc Take your radiator cap so you can make sure get the correct size
Try borrowing one from a mechanic maybe?

AnonymousDamn Trent, you have had some bad luck with that bike:( If I had the problems you had I’d be looking to change manufacturer as well as bikes!
It doesn’t sound good that coolant is dissapearing though. Sorry to hear you still have issues mate.
If you want to you could ride the 450 and I’ll take the 200 out?
October 1, 2009 at 11:21 am #154865Thanks for the offer mate I appreciate that but wouldn’t like to ride someone elses bike for a full day. If you’re really keen to ride I can get my brother’s bike and still go out – I was going to make that call tomorrow and didn’t want to stuff anyone around and figured I might spend saturday fixing it but it right now I don’t even know what’s causing the problem!
I’m really second guessing myself but I know that my bike always starts easy and idles smooth whereas today it idled for a good couple of minutes then wouldn’t idle and then wouldn’t start and that’s when I saw the white stuff in the sight glass but then the oil I dumped looks ok!
I do feel as though I’ve had a bad run with this bike but I think its tainted by the work I did on my brother’s bike due to him drowning it. The work I’ve done to date on my bike was caused by the previous owner rather than a trait of the bike so I don’t hold it against KTM but I’m starting to think the low maintenance 2 stroke might be better.
Funny thing is normally I love getting the wrenches out but this week has been crap and I just want to ride to de-stress.

AnonymousDon’t stress about riding mate, if you need to do other stuff just do it, you need to get your bike fixed
If we don’t ride and you do fix your bike I may even stop by to say hi and offer councelkling :laugh:
Maybe you should try giving it a rip up and down the road and see if it still idels funny?
As TB said, if the oil looks okay and it doesn’t use heaps of coolant just ride it
October 1, 2009 at 12:02 pm #154875I’m going to try and get a pressure test done tomorrow some time while its got no oil in it.
As I said I’m mad keen for a ride but there’s no sense stressing out and forcing something because I’ll be too worked up its just that I’ve had a crappy couple of weeks and would really like to get it out there and burn up some tracks.
I almost feel like I’m one of those dopey bitches that falls in love with a d!@khead bloke and keeps going back for more floggings because I still can’t convince myself there’s a better bike for me right now considering my level of riding. I’ll give you a call or text tomorrow mate.

October 2, 2009 at 12:34 am #154895I went in to KTM this morning and while I was waiting for them to open I spoke to a mate who was a KTM team mechanic and is now with Yamaha. His diagnosis over the phone was that either the ring had cracked, the head gasket failed or the RHS crank case seal had failed.
Fix is change piston and ring since they should be done around now anyway. Check the head gasket for problems. Check if ring is cracked then put it back together and take it for a ride and see how it behaves. If its still getting oil in the airbox its possible that the RHS crank case seal may have gone and this can be replaced relatively simply by taking the clutch cover off and a couple of other pieces one of which requires a rattle gun which I’ll have to buy or take the bike in to have done then replace the seal and clutch gasket. He’s also suggested that I replace the water pump seal in case that’s the cause of the water.
I’ve ordered the three seals I need from KTM newcastle for $57 but they wont have them till next week. In hindsight I should have just tried the first step then ordered them but at least I’ll have them as spares if the problem is solved!
I’ve decided I’m going to try and work from home today so once I’ve done what I need to I can duck down and get into the piston change. I’m told it should only take a couple of hours but I’ll be taking my time. With any luck I may be able to do a test run tonight and if its good I’ll take a ride tomorrow.
BTW for those interested running the bike and even getting it to temp wont necessarily create enough pressure in the crank case to push oil out the vent hose but the build up of pressure is no doubt why its stalling. I also thought that it was hard to kick when I was in the bush but thought that was because I was buggered but from what I’ve learnt I believe it was due to the pressure in the crank case.
I’ll update through the day.
