Ok.. I have noticed a few differences since having the top end done on the DRZ400 to sort the valve issues……….. One difference is in the negative category..
Besides having the top end done I requested that the carby be cleaned and inspected thinking there may be some dirt in there due to the dirty tank and fuel I ran on the Nabiac ride.. It turns out the carby was clean and fine however since the re-assembly I now have a bog at idle when cold or slightly warm as well while riding and cracking it to pull the front end over of pot hole, log etc.. This was not present prior to carby dis-assembly and cleaning.. It is most noticeable in second/third gear when riding if that has any relevance… Another observation is the issue at stand still does not occur when the choke is on.. When the choke is on I can turn the throttle quickly to full open and it revs as one would expect.. If I turn the choke off it idles fine but when I turn the throttle any amount it just dies.. Keep in mind starting is no issue as she always starts first go..
This leads me to believe it is a air/fuel mixture issue and I’m hoping it is a adjustment to the air/fuel mixture screw or as the manual says pilot screw.. My thinking/logic is: I believe the choke gives more fuel and less air when on.. So logically thinking when off there is not enough fuel and too much air having an imbalance or possible wrong setting when re-assembled?
The second part is where the F#$%^ is the pilot screw? The manual leads me to believe I have to dis-assemble and/or remove the carby..
Any help suggestions would be most appreciated..
Cheers….
March 20, 2011 at 4:39 pm #198512If the same jets were used when it was stripped and cleaned and put back together and it didnt do it before your on the right track it needs to be adjusted richer as that is was the choke does.
When we did the project Dr400 we fitted an adjustable mixture screw which means you need to pull the bottom of the bowl of and drill a hole to fit the adjustable jet. Worth its weight in gold
The jet then sticks out the bottom of the bowl recess and can be adjusted with your fingers as anytime with ease
Was the clip put back on the needle in the same spot? That said it sounds like the mixture as the same pilot jet would have been refitted

But this is Tech help so let me say that I don’t know what the solution is but I do have the workshop manual on PDF if you need it.

Krusty: Where might I get one of these? Are they easy to fit?

Krusty: I’m not sure and that was another worry.. I asked that question and was told yes but who knows eh..

March 23, 2011 at 9:49 pm #198515thanks fellas…
Just about 3.. Maybe even slightly more… I reckon it still has the stock jets in it.. The extended things has numbers on it..
March 23, 2011 at 9:58 pm #1986853 turns out is a fair bit Krusty you could probably go up a pilot jet or maybe two in size and bring the jet back to around 1.5 turns. You would have the top out of the air box and the aftermarket exhaust so it would be breathing heaps better hence needing the mixture out so far. The bigger pilot would make it go a little better as well
imo

March 24, 2011 at 10:25 am #198516I was thinking the same actually… I don’t think the previous owner changed the jetting when they changed the pipe.. I may remove the carby and see what sizes are in there and go from there..
Cheers…
